If I was a passenger on a flight that had to land to let off trouble makers & made my flight longer I'd be pissed! Right? I mean, this is a small example of the larger issue in our society, which is what I was trying to get at on page 1. Generally speaking, we are becoming a society of hiding behind our electronic distractions and social media humanoids, saying whatever, whenever we want. A real life interaction with our seat mate near us, let alone display some polite behavior? Gasp! Blasphemy! Nope, we're going to be disrespectful toward a fellow human, and become shocked when they not only react, but react in a manner we disagree with. It boils down to communication. "Hey, man, excuse me, would you mind scooching your seat forward a bit? I'm working on a report that is due and need my tray. I'll just be a few more minutes." Instead, as Z said, it turned into something disrespectful, and physical. I agree. While I do think I have every right to recline, if the person behind me was super nice about it (not blunt and direct as mentioned in an earlier post) and said "I just need 15 minutes. I would so appreciate it if you could sit upright for that long". I would be totally fine with it. But if you want to go all "I'm working, out your seat up" on me, that isn't going to happen

I haven't flown in a long time so don't know what changes may have been made to reduce the room each person has around them. I never reclined my seat. Airplanes are for sleeping on. The few times I flew in economy class, I just curled up in the seat and went to sleep. Fortunately, I'm flexible.

"sorry, you should have done your work on time. I am tired and I'm going to keep my seat exactly where it is." Fight ensues. Outcome unchanged. Lol!

They allow kids in first class now. I'd be pissed to pay a small fortune and still have to deal with a kid/baby.

Again - the person using his or her tray is also using the seat as intended. Why do you feel the person who reclines has any more right to that area than the person using the tray? I use my tray all time and the person in front of me typically reclines. I have never had a problem with the tray while the person is reclining. I have never been on a flight where the seats reclined enough to annoy anyone

Iggy aka IG - I love this topic. DH is 6'4". I am a whole foot shorter then him. It's easy to say just buy upgraded seats, but not everyone is wealthy enough to fly first class. When we fly DH usually has his legs spread wide just so his knees are not pushing up against the seat in front of him (trying to yanno actually be considerate of our fellow sardines). He's encroaching on my space so that I have little left but that's ok. When someone slams their seats all the way back it's almost like they're trying to crack DH's legs like a wishbone. He is then forced to sit straight up in his chair and brace his knees against the seat in front on him. He doesn't do it just to annoy the person in front of him, there is literally no where else he can put his knees. Yes I blame the airlines for squeezing people into smaller and smaller spaces. However it increasingly appears that this has enabled those with less than stellar manners to use the fact they paid for a flight as an excuse to be a rude bore. I'm going to assume those are the same folks that will sit on a crowded bus while an elderly man stands because, after all, they paid for their ticket as well.

Does he complain? I highly doubt it. He sits on an aisle seat so he is able to stretch his legs out in between cart service.

I'm always really really surprised that people recline so much on flights because I just consider it REALLY rude. I'll do it every once in awhile if there is a little kid behind me and I know, for a fact, that there is plenty of open space. But if there is an adult, there is no way I'm reclining back into their space. You expect me to sit up completely straight for a 16 hr flight to Thailand?

So, the take away from all this: Perhaps travelers can start petitions to send to airlines requesting more personal space. Or, even further: Do something about the increasing costs which are making the airlines add more chairs, add to their fees, etc. Fuel, workers comp insurance increases for workers, food costs, etc. Nah, too much work. Let's just bitch at each other and attack the airline attendant for simply trying to do their job. Meh, maybe I'm just living in my humanitarian, activist, lets do something to change the world too much today. I'll sleep now.

Good grief. What kind of huge ass electronic devices are you people using that someone in front of you can't recline? They have these things now called tablets. They are quite small and thin. Great for traveling.

I flew once to brazil in coach because business class was almost double the normal price as it was around carnival. Never again and that was only 10 hours!

If I had 6'4" person behind me and it is a relatively short flight (3-4 hrs) then I won't recline but honestly my back starts to hurt when I sit straight up longer than that. I don't feel like my comfort is any less important than another person's.

I use my tray all time and the person in front of me typically reclines. I have never had a problem with the tray while the person is reclining. I have never been on a flight where the seats reclined enough to annoy anyone I agree. I have never had a significant problem using my tray if the seat in front of me is reclined. Maybe part of that is because I am reclined as well, so I am 2 inches further back. And yes, I will recline. I find airplane seats unbelievably uncomfortable. If I had to sit 5 hours unreclined I would be in tears. I had always assumed it was because I was short & the backs are designed for taller folks, but I notice no one else on here has made a similar comment. So it is probably actually due to the back surgeries I had when I was younger which fused the upper half of my spine. My back can't curve to the seat like most people...interesting because I never realized this was the real issue, I just thought they were poorly designed seats. The recline does help a little, but the seats are still uncomfortable to me. Also, if you are tall you don't have to go first class. Pay a little extra & get the emergency row or the front row of coach. My dad is 6'5" & this is what he always does when flying. It still isn't comfortable, but more tolerable.

So who else thinks the airlines will eventually just use this to make more money. Now we will have a reclining section that cost $75 more or something.

Yes, I can curl up and sleep, but anything over 6 hours and I'm going to be awake. That's not going to be acceptable, I can assure you. I'll pay whatever I have to pay to prevent that from happening and did so years ago.

Any flight over 4 hours we fly first or business class for just this reason. One of the key reasons we've only been to Europe once.

I keep hearing everyone say they can use their tray, but I think it really depends on what you are using it for. To rest the teacup sized pop they hand out... yeah no problem To effectively see a laptop screen... problem Yes I use a laptop. I also will read and proof reports when I'm traveling.

This is slightly off topic but still has to do with rudeness/politeness on airplanes. I flew for vacation back in June. When I got to my seat someone else was sitting in it. She informed me she switched seats with me because she wasn't seated with her husband & baby & she needed to be with them for the baby's sake. I asked where her seat was & she didn't really know. Well how exactly do you expect me to switch when you can't even be bothered to tell me where I'm supposed to go? I did eventually find her seat & all was fine but she annoyed me.
On the flight home again there someone else in my seat, but a lady saw me check the seat number, stood up & asked very politely if it would inconvenience me too much to switch seats, pointing to the new seat. Also offering an upgrade from middle seat to window seat. She thanked me very graciously. And she thanked me again when we landed. I was happy to accomodate her & the upgrade didn't hurt.

I tend not to recline for shorter flights (3 hours or less). But, for long haul (especially overnight flights), I find it close to impossible to sleep without using the recline. And, i think it's unreasonable for anyone to expect the person in front of them to not recline on long haul flights.
The only time I've had an issue with someone reclining into my space was when I was in first class on a regional jet. The recline went so far back that I couldn't even get my tray table to come down at all.
The biggest issue though is that the pitch in coach has gotten ridiculous. I think coach is fine for most trips if you know where to sit and how to get seated there (bulkhead seats, exit row seats, and knowing which seats don't recline or have limited recline in the cabin), but most people who fly have no idea and so are stuck with a random crappy coach seat. Although, while price rules that won't ever change.
