Ebola

We already deal with rabid bats, hantavirus from mouse-y dung, and fleas/ticks that transmit things like both kinds of Plague. People come into contact with rabid bats, infected mouse dung and fleas/ticks here in America and yes a handful of people a year get sick or die. But, compare that to the 2000 or so people who drown or die in water each year in America (for example - you could also compare to deaths involving trains or auto accidents or drunk driving if you like)... when was the last time you worried about your pool or your neighbors pool or taking your kids to the Lake to picnic and swim?? Probably about the same amount of time you spent worrying about bats or mouse dung.
Maybe it is just me, but I worry far more abuot pools & lakes than I ever even think about bats or mice. My kids are not even allowed to play in the neighbor's backyard because they have a pool. I would think most parents would be like me. But then maybe not & maybe that is why so many kids drown each year There have been reports of rabid bats near where I live now, and yet I am still more worried about lake water after a young girl recently died from getting one of those brain-eating amoebas. We have a ton of lakes around here and they are just lovely hosts for all kinds of nasty stuff.

Well, it's been 16 days since the original "media" blitz about Ebola - and so far Ebola hasn't spread outside of Africa - there's been plenty of people moving around via air travel - even before it hit the mainstream media.
And, I don't mean to trivialize the awfulness that is happening in the communities dealing with ebola... just that perhaps the media created alot of fear and worry and 'rumor' and 'myth' than was necessary...

Dr. Brantley is supposed to be going home soon. Apparently all of their possessions in Liberia were destroyed due to contamination risk, so the family really has nothing right now. But I think they are probably just grateful to be alive! A good friend of ours knows the Brantleys and just went to Haiti with them a few years ago. And some other friends of ours know the Writebols. Small small world!

That looting and the 17 infected people who 'vanished' back into the slum area "because there is no ebola" is going to make for some interesting news reading soon...
I doubt this had much to do with a war lord... more just with the dynamics of a lot of people (tens of thousands) living in close quarters - both rich and poor (but mostly poor). I'm wondering what's going to happen when the poor people in the slums (many of them refugees from the civil war) decide they need to 'get away' from the curse....
The rich folks will be fine... they will sequester themselves (as they have the means to do it) or they will leave. Those in the slums effected by the virus - are just screwed.
