When you are accusing her of "feeling guilty" and telling her that she must have something to feel guilty about, it is pretty clear what you mean. You are making this personal & questioning her judgement as a mother. It may not be a direct attack, which is why I haven't stepped in as an admin. But, I am asking you to be respectful and stop it before this goes any further. Does this also apply to people telling other they must have reading comprehension issues and they need to get down off their high horses? Because that's pretty personal, too. I did it yesterday and I'm feeling badly. I'm going to delete it now. That sort of stuff is also disrespectful and probably shouldn't be said either. But, I will admit I have a bit of a sort spot when it comes to implying someone is a bad mother. BTDT and it rubs me the wrong way a lot quicker than a lot of other things that get said on this board. And I don't know if Mutt's feelings were hurt at all, but if that had been said to me, then I would be upset by it. Most of us are moms on here & love our kids dearly and our just doing the best we can. To call someone out as a bad mom is uncalled for IMO.

Stepping in here - let's debate the issue(s), not the poster(s). No more cracks about reading comprehension or people being bad mothers, please.

Maybe older cars didn't have this capability, but I'm able to lock my car while its running - I just take the electronic keyfob off. I have an extra one stashed at the house because I've locked my keys in my car so many times. (Sometimes the house key/cell phone, too... ugh!)
This actually happened to me accidentally several times with my first car. Nothing like having to call your mom to come into town to unlock your running car in a location you probably shouldn't have been in the first place.
Anyway, that would seem to eliminate (or at least greatly minimize) the danger of someone jacking your car with your kid inside. A locked car, even if running, probably wouldn't be a great target. Since locked cars do get stolen, I'm not sure how much a deterrent locking the car yet keeping it running is. Likely a unlocked car, with the keys in the ignition, running or not might be a thief's preferred choice. However, a running locked car is a much quicker getaway than a locked car whose engine is off and would have to be hot-wired.

Anyone Hotwire a car lately? I've never done it. So if it were me and I needed to steal a car, a running one would be a better choice even if I broke the window to do so.

Anyone Hotwire a car lately? My ex bf was parked on a side street outside an art gallery when his car was stolen. He had a few drinks and got a ride to my house. We went to go get it the next morning on our way to the park, but it was gone. This was an old beater worth nothing. A week prior, the window motor stopped working and he hadn't gotten it fixed, so it was slightly cracked with plastic and duct tape covering the opening to prevent rain from getting in. This is how they unlocked the car. Called the police and gave the plate numbers while we went out searching for it. The police found it a few days later in a really shady area of the city a few miles from the gallery. From that day forward he had to start the car with the screwdriver they left in the ignition since it was jacked up. The police deduced it was a gang related challenge to earn street cred. They were teenagers. Cars get broken into almost every week at the softball complex I play at. They just break the window and steal stuff if it's locked. If not they go in without breaking the window. My very nice upper class neighborhood association (in the county, 20 min from the city and the gangs) just put out an email reminding people that break-ins are more frequent in the summer when kids are out of school. Matter of fact, it just happened to two friends of mine in a nearby neighborhood and happened to me twice in our old neighborhood...during the summer.

Just a FYI, public service announcement. I started googling to see if there were stats on car thefts such as locked, unlocked, running, etc. and found this.
"A state law — “Unattended Motor Vehicle” act — is enforced in the town of Vail. It is illegal in Colorado to leave your car running unattended with the keys in the ignition. Vail officers can write tickets to discourage this invitation to car thieves.
“According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 50 percent of cars stolen have the keys in them,” Causey said. "
www.vaildaily.com/news/9736936-113/unattended-running-vail-car
So you might want to check your states laws if you leave your car running unattended whether its locked or not.

So it's illegal to leave your locked car running. And it's illegal to leave your kid in the car. And it's illegal to leave your kid at home unless they're a certain age. And if you bring your kid into the store and s/he misbehaves you receive the wrath of the other shoppers.
And you guys give me grief for becoming ever more Libertarian? Sheesh.

I know it's illegal in MO to leave the car running while unattended. Every year they do a story on the news in the winter because so many cars are stolen from driveways while people are still inside getting ready for work. But if the car was intentionally left running then the owner can get the ticket for it. Not sure if the thief still is prosecuted (if they ever find one) or not.

And you guys give me grief for becoming ever more Libertarian? Sheesh. Laws happen in large part because people react to problems they perceive. If 50% of cars stolen in an area (actually over 80% in St. Petersburg, FL. according to one article) are running with keys in the ignition, it makes sense that in a time where many local governments have to cut costs on police that perhaps discouraging this behavior via laws and fines is the way some are going to choose. Cutting police time tracking down stolen vehicles by 50% seems a big taxpayer savings to me.
I had no idea, because I don't leave my car running unless I'm in it or next to it.
Since we can't control other people, I think the wrath of other shoppers is the best choice.

I don't know why she brought them in since i thought we were talking about when "you" as a bystander would call the cops.

I left my 6 year old in the van the other day when I picked up takeout. She wanted to stay there and watch the movie. The van was parked in front go the deli with big plate glass windows and there was no line. I was in there approximately 1 minute. She could see me the whole time I was in there.
The he van was running, doors locked, AC on.
Good thing I have tinted windows so the cops weren't called on me.

I'm able to remotely start my car without the keys in the ignition.. the doors have to be locked in order for me to do it. So I could have my kids locked safely in the car with the a/c on but no way to put the car in gear and drive away. Is that okay? Actually I left my 11 yo in the car with the keys in the ingintion and the car running and he assured me that he would punch anyone who tried to break into the car. No. Your children must be in arms reach at all t imes.

Beer or other carbonated stuff doesn't work well in the Camelback. Mixed drinks (with fruit juice mixers, again no carbonation) work well, though.

@bunnysmom... I like you but that was way over the line. I'm debating whether to report it. I'm normally not the reporting type when it comes to this board but I don't like to see my friends attacked either.
I didn't mean for the thread to go in this direction and I don't like it.

I know at least two of the mods are already following this thread so I'll leave it up to them. But that kind of shit is beneath all of us (I would really like to think).
