WTH is up with this part of the story? But the mother didn't have her cellphone and had to find a way home before she could report her daughter missing at about 3:30 a.m., Smith said.
Someone steals her car and baby from a gas station and she has to wait until she gets home to call somebody? Why on earth wouldn't you call from the gas station? was the station open with an attendant? That would be odd.....unless she needed to sober up It said it was stolen when she went inside to pay for gas. Something is weird there. WTF just walks home after something like that?

I saw that article this morning and thought about this thread. So glad the baby is OK (although it made me very sad to think of an 8mo old crying alone in a field - that's right around DD's age).
I can't even imagine what I would do if someone drove off with DD in the car. I'd probably keel over from a stroke right there.

It said it was stolen when she went inside to pay for gas.
And you all questioned why I wouldn't just leave my kid in the car when I ran in for a middle of the night gas station bathroom break/coffee run. I'm sure there are several unanswered questions but things like this just serve to reinforce that I am maybe not a complete nutter for not wanting to leave my kids sleeping in the car so I can make a potty run.

I thought about this thread over the weekend. And this morning as I was doing dropoff of the kids. I've had gas station attendants not want to call to report car accidents but I'm fairly sure that they'd call for a stolen car w/ baby in it.

I don't think anyone thinks you are nutter for not doing it.
As for that article - was the car locked? was it running?

The latest on the Atlanta toddler: The father continues to be held in jail and was denied bond. The police will not release any details of their investigation to date and the autopsy results are not yet available.
I am wondering if the police think this "toddler in a hot car" is not an accidental death. They have searched the fathers office for evidence.

I can't even imagine.. has there been any updates on that dad accused of murder in the heat exhaustion case? I think we had something on the thread about the police saying there was "more to it" than just forgetting the kid....but I haven't seen any updates? I think due to the charges nothing will be discussed publicly until the case comes to trial. However one of the comments (I can't remember the article) claimed insider information that a computer search on his computer found that he had searched for information on how long it took to "cook" a kid in a car before the incident. Several of the updates refer to the computer search/warrant and they authorities seem pretty confident on the charges. It would explain the dual cruelty/murder charges.

I remember when my son was a baby and in his carseat, I drove from Albany, GA to Panama City Beach to stay at the beach with my parents. Hubby had to stay home and work. No bathroom breaks for me the entire way because I would not take him into the restroom with me. Stupid of me I know. I am guessing it was around 150 miles. The first thing when I got to PCB was to give the baby to Grandma and make a beeline to the bathroom.

They have to be able to stand for a few seconds while I unbutton my pants and then button them back up, but other than that, I'm good.

Did you know that some places now have "toddler seats" in the bathroom stalls? Where you can strap a toddler into the seat, next to you, while you pee? I alternate between thinking it's amazing and amazingly stupid.

That is a situation in which I think our criminal justice system, being constrained by the Constitution, falls far short of "justice."
The only acceptable punishment for such an act (assuming found guilty beyond a reasonable doubt, etc.) is to allow the perp to also be cooked in a hot car. Maybe while nursing a couple of broken legs.

I alternate between thinking it's amazing and amazingly stupid. I saw one of those in Chick-Fil-A this weekend! They also had little bins filled with size 1-2 and size 3-4 diapers. I was impressed. Unfortunately DD was not with me to test out all this technology.

I do have one of those. Actually, I sold it now because DD is not a cuddle toddler and my back is crazy out of wack. But really it was a pain to pee using it. I know because that was all I had for DD when DH was in the hospital (back when DD was cuddly).

It honestly never crossed my mind. I don't know where my mind was that day. I did not travel alone with him very often when he was little.

(Actually, we barely use a stroller and don't have one we really like other than the jogger). We also haven't traveled with a baby that couldn't stand at least while you put a hand on them. We've done a lot of traveling with the kids over 7 months, but have barely left town while they were younger.

Under certain circumstances, yes. Deliberately harming a child that cannot defend his or herself - hell yes. Can't say I don't agree. I honestly can't imagine if that was my child. Me neither. I was so damn paranoid about the kids getting left in an infant seat when DH or I went to work. It was probably for the best that my Mom was day care for DD for the first year and a half or so. Because then I did drop off every morning and didn't have to let DH know just how deep the fear of having DD die in the car was.

I just thought I would mention why I don't use them. DD will usually sit still on my lap while I'm peeing. Considering most of the time she is only sits still if it is naptime or bedtime and she is getting a bottle, I'll take my cuddles anytime I can get them.

It's sad, because she is so damn chubby and cute, I just want to squeeze and pinch her all the time. (I can't imagine why she doesn't want to cuddle with me... )

Wow - I'm glad I never heard of this when my kids were little - I didn't need additional worries. I can't see that I would have ever forgot them, though. As a single parent - it was always me. I think most of these tragedies happened with a change of routine or when the parents switched off days...so a bit of extra stress/distraction and they forgot. I'm thankful nothing so terrible has ever occurred in my life or those around me. IT didn't help that around this time, a child died after being left in a day care van near my parents' house. And the child's family is/was members of DH's church and his SIL was quite close with the mom. It really hit home and that's a huge part of the reason why I wouldn't bus DD to school for K4.

In my head things like that happen all the time That network has the most disturbing movies playing practically 24/7. I knew I should turn the damn thing off but watched way too much. If they hadn't played a half dozen episodes of the golden girls every day to break it up who knows what would have happened to me. And thank god we don't have cable anymore.
