Moderation. Pop or soda is not poison. One every now and then will not kill you nor ruin your health. Growing up we never had it in the house. We drank water or brewed iced tea. (Milk was available, but I never was a milk drinker.) Occasionally we'd order it if we went out to eat or we'd get it as a special treat at our grandparent's. ONE glass, though. Not a 28 oz. bottle or whatever they are now. My kids were allowed one pop per day. No fights or arguments from them; it's just the way it was. Sometimes they didn't drink it at all. DH still only drinks one per day with dinner. Again, one can. Not a large bottle. Oldest DS was a state champion wrestler and if he needed to make weight all he'd do was stop drinking pop. I think people are fooling themselves thinking they are healthier by drinking energy drinks and flavored water. Nope. Still full of sugar and chemicals. If people would start having their babies and toddlers drink lots of water on a daily basis a lot of unhealthy habits would be eliminated. But, instead, let's blame an entire for-profit industry.

A lot of people do not think liquid calories count. Had that argument with DH multiple times. He bought an exercise bike (which is now a clothes rack) and bitched he couldn't figure out why he wasn't losing weight.
It has a computer that tells you how many calories you burn so I asked him what it said. I fished one of his Red Bills out of the fridge and looked at the label. I said "Congratulations for all that work you burned off half a 20 oz Red Bull. You drink 40 oz PER DAY."
When added up he'd consumed an entire meal's worth of calories without actually eating anything!
He didn't get it, he said he didn't believe me since the main ingredient in Red Bull is water.

For most people, taking B12 supplements are as good (or better) than any energy drink. Though most still have the problem of being kept awake if you take it too close to bed time.

I drink Diet Coke. Have for decades. I use to drink alot more of it but I cut back because the caffiene in the evening started messing with my sleeping. I drink 2 cans a day at work and then another can in the evening (I also drink coffee in the morning along with my Diet Coke). I don't like sode from the 2 liter bottles or even the little plastic bottles. It's different somehow... I can't explain it. I also think that Coke already has too many 'formulations' they've got a coke flavored product based on all of the various artificial sweetners. But, then that's because people don't respond to the sweetners the same way. I would have switched over to Coke Zero but the sweetner in that leaves a nasty lingering bitter taste that I just can't get past. I can cope with the after taste of Diet Coke. If people aren't drinking as much soda/pop - what ARE they drinking? I'm guessing the "healthy" water drinks and "sport drinks" or "energy booster" drinks are eating up the market. Those things have just as many chemicals and artificial sweetners as 'soda/pop'. I keep seeing my silly relatives and co-workers having some sort of canned Tea drink - becuase it's "healthy' and they are trying to loose weight - and well, there's upwards of 300 calories in that can o' "Tea" and if they are drinking a 'lite' one - there's all that artificial sweetner they're avoiding. I don't think they can see well enough to read the fine print on the can... Some people (like me) just drink water. Not Snapple or Vitamin Water or whatever. Just water.

I drink water most of the time or unsweetened iced tea I make myself. I go thru spurts with pop where I'll drink it for a week or two and then not touch it again for the rest of the year.
A few cans/bottles of pop per year aren't going to kill me or ruin my health. I'm "obnoxiously healthy" as several doctors have told me at annual physicals. It might make me live to only 90 instead of 120 but I am okay with that.
Everyone has their vices. It's when the vices get out of control it's a problem.
I wouldn't be thrilled with DH drinking one 8 oz Red Bull a day. I prefer he doesn't drink it at all since he has kidney stone issues as well as weight issues. BUT that being said it would still be a vast improvement over 40 ounces of Red Bull per day (sometimes more!)

It's all about reading labels, too. Pop isn't the only sugar-laden constantly consumed food out there. A cup of those fruity flavored yogurts has as much sugar as a candy bar or a couple of cookies. Even PLAIN yogurt can be tricky. I buy 2% Fage because it has far less added sugar than a few of the other brands do.
Like Meghan said: water. PLAIN water. Start your kids drinking it daily when they are small; set the example yourself.

I quit drinking diet soda cold turkey 10 months and 6 days ago. It may sound crazy that I remember the exact day, but I was apparently even more addicted than I thought. I was drinking between 6-12 cans a day, every single day. I would start first thing in the morning instead of coffee. When I stopped, it was all I thought about for months. Ok maybe not the only thing, but it was very consuming. Up until a month or so ago, I would have dreams about drinking it. Even now, sometimes I have to make a deliberate decision not to drink it because an incredibly strong craving will hit. I quit smoking over 3 years ago and I would rather do it again 10 more times than have to quit diet soda again. Aspartame is very addictive and I definitely was. I also have PCOS, which affects my blood sugar levels. I've noticed that since I quit, my sugar levels are more stable, provided I don't eat absolute garbage all day. I also sleep better and just feel better. I initially allowed myself one cup of coffee in the morning just to get some caffiene, but then a few months ago I stopped drinking coffee and just gave a freshly brewed cup of green tea in the morning, sometimes in the afternoon. I drink mostly water and maybe a milk with dinner. (And wine. I'm never quitting wine. )

I "treat" myself to a bottle of Pepsi at the register when I've shopped with the kids. And I've realized the longer my conference calls go (and with their increasing frequency), I'm drinking more cans of Pepsi at work.

For most people, taking B12 supplements are as good (or better) than any energy drink. Though most still have the problem of being kept awake if you take it too close to bed time. I didn't know this about B12!! I wonder if that's what might be causing my BP to be a little too high.

The Coca Cola Company does not care about public health. They care about making sales. They will do whatever it takes to "keep" their consumers - including fiddling with their formulas if they can "entice" folks with "healthier changes" to keep their bottom line intact. (to answer your second question, we drink plain water and green tea. And sometimes Arnold Palmers [half tea, half lemonade]. Occasionally in the winter - homemade hot chocolate and homemade chai tea lattes).

On the theme of eating/drinking something that appears is marketed as healthy - there's the 'energy/protein bar' snacks that are pretty brutal in calories/fat/sugars. Let's face it, the real problem here is just all the 'empty calories' that people eat OR the 'I'm under the impression I need these calories to be healthy' stuff that people eat/drink. I'm finding it amusing that 'protein' is being added to EVERYTHING - even breakfast cereal. The last I heard Americans were already consuming way more protein than was needed... and now this will just add even more. Can you say looks like alot of future Kidney problems?

If you look at the ingredients, like on the 5 hour energy shot, B12 is listed at the top right with caffeine. Not a Dr, but wouldn't think a lot of B12 would raise your blood pressure.

I wish I was like you and could learn to drink more water all day. The thing is I never ever feel thirsty, even when working out and sweating. I know that dehydration is bad on the heart and BP and weight, so I will have to work on that. I found that setting a timer helps, if I can remember to do it.

Another tap water drinker here. It's just something you get used to. Growing up we only had milk or water in the house and as a kid I found that really annoying. We'd get a 2 liter of Coke for Christmas or maybe my birthday but that was about it. Turns out milk and water are exactly all you find in my fridge also, well sometimes I get crazy and brew some tea for iced tea. I don't even drink any holiday coke now because it tastes like chemicals to me (unless it has rum in it, the rum hides the chemicals).

Lonewolf, drinking water is a learned habit just like exercise. Gulp down an ice cold glass even if you don't feel thirsty. The more you drink the more your body will crave and will "alert" you via thirst that it needs more.
I have a Deep Rock water cooler in my office and at home. I drink it all day, too, like Sheila. It also has the hot water dispenser so I can make green tea if I'm feeling sluggish.

Those "protein" bars are mostly carbohydrates anyway. And our bodies treat carbohydrates like sugar so they aren't really good for us at all. My husband was all about the protein bars for a while until I pointed out the ingredients and the calories and that. Found they weren't really any healthier than your average candy bar half the time.

I didn't used to drink this much water during the day but once I started to I find myself craving it. I'll even get up in the middle of the night to have a glass of water.

Yikes! Gulping down ice water = bad brain freeze . Just sayin" . . .
Either sip it slowly or if you want to "down" large quantities try room temperature. Yeah, you get used to it.

You do really need to pay attention to labels. I screwed up buying cranberry juice a few times. It helps DH pass his stones and I went to the supermarket to buy some. When I got home and he read the label it only contained 30% juice and most of it was apple. I pretty much bought him sugar water. Whoops. I fell for the clever packaging.

Costco sells the Mexican coke with real sugar, at least around here they do. I drink soda maybe once every two months after cutting back on the 1-2 diet sodas I would drink during the week at work. I figure if I'm going to drink something loaded with calories I'll take a beer over a soda and if I am drinking soda I'll take one with real sugar over a diet one with aspartame.

My hubby was taking BP meds, not because he had high, BP, but to keep his heart from having racing attacks. Sinus tachycardia I think is what it's called. Well, his BP is normally too low, so being on these meds was causing him to feel way too tired. But even on the meds, he would have attacks, so when one happened he would take another pill and the attack would slowly stop. Then I got to thinking..."Maybe it's not the extra pill that is causing the attack to stop, but rather the water he's drinking when he takes the pill." Sure enough! He's weaned himself off the pills, is drinking lots of water, has had no more attacks and feeling soooo much better!!! Throw a spit wad at your co-worker when you walk by. My chiropractor was the first to notice that I was dehydrated. She told me to keep a closed bottle of water in the bathroom and every time I sat down to go pee, I should drink water. As long as I can remember to do it, it works. I just don't understand why I never feel thirsty.

My sister's BF is allergic to artificial sweeteners, ER visit allergic. I just hate the taste, so I didn't have any food around that would poison him. Not that I'd want to. Yet.

Yeah, I probably should've left out the "ice cold" part. I like it that way, but DH can only drink lukewarm water.
And, this was completely accidental on my part but you know kids and things with buttons / levers, etc. Both DGS and DGD have been fascinated by the Deep Rock cooler in the kitchen since day one. (The hot water lever is childproof.) So, I got them each their own fun water cup and they can use the cooler and fill up their cups themselves as often as they want but they HAVE to drink it all! No dumping it out. So far they both drink several cups of water every time they are with us. (DGD is only 1 so she doesn't actually use the lever yet, but she does drink her cups of water!)

I read an article recently that thirst is often interpreted as being hungry. That a lot of the time when you think you're hungry, you're actually just thirsty. I'm guessing it has something to do with most people drinking when they eat but not so much when they're not eating so you've trained your brain that hunger = drink.
