I'm stumped.
I'm making DS a Minecraft cake for his birthday party on Friday. I thought about stacking up some bricks to make a little wall on the top of the cake.. Pez would be my first choice, but Pez only comes in girly colors. I thought about Jolly Ranchers, but I'm not sold on the idea yet...
Any other suggestions?

I'd go with inedibles & buy a small Lego brick set to make the wall. If you have a Lego store in your area, they have the 'wall of bricks' where you can just buy the specific brick size/shape/color you want in small quantities. If you are set on an edible brick wall, I noticed that my grocery store carries mini-marshmallows in a variety of colors. There was a mix that had brown and light green marshmallows in it. That would be an easy wall to build that could be layered with frosting to hold it together. The other option would be to make rice crispie treats (maybe with chocolate rice crispies) & cut them up small to make the bricks. A little green frosting on top & I think it would look very minecrafty. |

Also, how about those candies that are shaped like slightly flattened, fluffy peanuts? No idea what they're called, but they'd make a fun brick wall and are the right color.

You could always make a batch of fudge and cut it up in squares any size you like, different flavors for different colors: chocolate, vanilla, peanut butter...

God, I haven't those in forever. My Dad still buys them now and again. Although that may have stopped once they decided he was borderline diabetic. Thank you everyone! You helped me get my creative juices flowing. Two of my kids have birthdays within a week of each other. I just got done with one and it was hard getting jazzed up for the second. I can decorate a cake all right if it's from a shaped wilton pan. This is more out of my league.
I've got a shopping list together, and I'll see what works!

Gira - someone has reformulated Candy Raisins and is marketing them as Candy Sunshine. So that might be an option too. They're still light brown.

You could use Candy Rocks. They're a little hard to find in stores but you can find them searching online.

No taunting (seriously). As a cakemaker who does it as a serious hobby (wedding and baby shower cakes for family and friends) I can pretty much promise you there is no practical way to stack candy and have it hold together without some kind of "mortar" or "glue." The easiest and fastest is Royal Icing - it hardens when dry. A quick internet search will yield you many recipes.
Her other option would be to "fake" bricks by coloring her icing in a red-brown brick (or cement gray, or whatever else she chooses), smooth-ice the sides of the cake, and then take a toothpick or skewer and carefully draw lines in whatever brick pattern she wants (stacked, offset, etc) to get a brick "look."
ETA: I suggested the Chicklets because they can be pressed into the sides of an iced cake in an offset "brick" pattern - and will hold if the icing underneath is applied thickly enough.
