I went to wal-mart, and no chocolate rocks. They had mini starbursts which I can mortar with frosting. I plan to do that tonight.
I also got heath pieces that you put in cookies to use to texturize the dirt. DS and I came up with that together.
If I the planets align tomorrow, I may try one more store for the rocks.
I figure if the cake is a flop, there's always ice cream cakes. Luckily, we live with a few miles of a DQ and 2 frozen custard places.

No taunting (seriously). As a cakemaker who does it as a serious hobby (wedding and baby shower cakes for family and friends) I'm jealous. I'd love to take some cake decorating classes. It's on my to-do list. By the time I'll have time, the littlest will be too old for fancy cakes

They make candy Lego blocks , think they're called candy blocks . Amazon sells them . I was going to say this. I LOVE those things, and cannot have them around! Especially the yellow ones!

Can you find a Wilton cake decorating class in your area? I took mine through a local cake and candy supply store, but I also know that Michael's offers classes. Have fun!

pick up a boatload of Hershey bars. They can be separated into those individual rectangles. They'd make great bricks. (they go well with the normal cake maker too as its part of the normal process to check those bricks out as part of your baker's quality control You know, 1 for the building on the cake, 2 for the baker etc etc....

I'm either working or we've got the kids. I found the chocolate rocks. I have abandoned my project, though. I baked the cake in a 9x13 pan and cut it to the desired shape. The frosting won't stick to the surfaces where I made my cuts. So, I'm off to dairy queen. If I can figure out how to upload a picture, I'll post my elmo cake...

I know it's too late for today, but for next time you need one of these: www.amazon.com/Wilton-Decorating-Tip-Cake-Icer/dp/B0000CFMP2/ref=sr_1_17?s=home-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1398453793&sr=1-17&keywords=icing+tipsIt is a monster "icing tip" that lays down thick ribbons of icing on your cake surfaces. No worries about spreading icing that won't "stick." Once the icing is laid down, you just have to smooth it over. Easy peasy Also for next time: I've seen pictures of "ice cream cakes" where someone cut away the carton from a quart of frozen ice cream, set the frozen round block of ice cream on a plate and then decorated it with cookies and candies to make a "castle." (stored in the freezer until serving time )

My mom took a Wilson class ages ago, so she and her sister have done wedding cakes, etc. for years. I've helped numerous times, and though I can't do the icing roses, I can base ice and do borders. Mom always levels off the tops of cakes by cutting off the dome, leaving a cut edge. It might be a little crumby, but you just lay the frosting on thick to bury the crumbs, or some people do a thin crumb coat first and top it with another coat.

Yep, there's a reason the first layer of icing is called the "crumb coat." But I've had really good luck eliminating the crumb coat by using the icing tip. YMMV

I have to say I'm totally impressed that some of you can decorate cakes. I have the artistic talent of a door knob. I would have started with the ice cream cake to begin with.

Twizzlers Red Licorice Nibs would resemble bricks - and they're the right color.

And the decorator frosting didn't want to play nicely.. I think there's a reason why 99% of the minecraft cakes were made with fondant, and the ones that used frosting looked terrible. I didn't want to sink the money/time into fondant or cut up a couple hundred 1" squares. And, honestly, I think it was OK. The boys was starving (late dinner after playing laser tag) and snarfed the food so fast they wouldn't have even noticed. They were also too anxious to go and play outside, that they almost didn't have desert.
