I wear mostly brown and green. Whenever I go shopping with my mom she shoves pink, aqua, yellow things at me. Do you think she's sending a message? you aren't a tree! wear some color! Green and brown are colors. I also have white, black, and beige...oh! Jeans are dyed with indigo, does that count? I do actually have some items in red, fuchsia, orange, and turquoise. From shopping with my mother.

I have now filled 2 trash bags. My closet has 42 less things in it than when I started. I'm not done yet.....my DH just stood there and grinned at me. He also walked into the closet and said it doesn't look any different yet. Darn him, he's right. Dad got bored one day and counted. He has 86 pairs of pants. Of course, that is Mom's fault, because Dad doesn't shop. For some reason your post reminded me of that.

I'm packing for a trip to Italy. 16 days. I have 3 core pieces, skirt, jacket, and pants. Tops and scarves/jewelry to change out the looks. I'm doing 4 paid of shoes, all black. I was trying for 3 but threw in some sandals. I'm taking other pieces, of course but my theme is going to be black and white with some color mixed in. Bought a dress at Nordstrom rack yesterday and some black flats that are even more comfy than the ones I was going to take. The dress is a print so will hide stains but also a wash and wear kinda dress. So I'm doing a capsule for my trip. I want to look stylish but I don't want to pack a lot of stuff. DF is a huge packer and its going to be fun to see him try to fit everything into one bag! You're going to Italy and you're not going to shop for shoes there? Are you sick? Or is the testosterone in your system taking control?

My DH laughs at me and tells me I don't have to take the kitchen sink when we leave....but he's certainly worse than I am.
However, the worst person I've ever seen is my best friend. I used to tease her that she could do major surgery with just what she carried in her golf bag. Snake bite kit? yep, she carries that too. For an overnight she'll be toting 3 suitcases.....just in case she needs something.

Zib...we shipped our luggage last year when we did the Alaska cruise. It was a little pricey, but the relief of not having to worry about TSA going thru them, we could lock the bags etc. They were picked up from the house, delivered to the ship, picked up from us outside the ship. They arrived at our house 2 days after we did. We plan on doing it this year also.

But if I do, I will ship them if I can't fit them in my bag. I always pack an empty duffel bag in my carry-on suitcase. On the way back I check the suitcase and carry-on the duffel. Even if I don't buy anything, it is much less stressful repacking and toting around a smaller bag on the way back.

If you have clothes that fit, are in good shape and are still in style, why would you get rid of them just to reach some magical number that somebody has said you should have? and how is that number figured - is it your entire wardrobe? what about dressy clothes? work clothes and play clothes separate? what about painting clothes? workout clothes? accessories? I think things should only be tossed when they wear out, don't fit or are hopelessly out of style (pants suit)....same with shoes - you can never have to many shoes

I am donating 6 sweatshirts, 4 sweaters, 2 jackets, 9 shirts, 4 dresses, and 14 tee shirts. DF insisted I put back about a dozen items. I did with the hangars turned around and told him that if by next year, the hangars are still turned around, away they go. I've gone through my slacks before and my shorts and my capris. I need to buy two well fitting pair of dark blue jeans.

I removed 4 mock turtleneck Tees from their hangers last night, and one sleeveless high neck white Tee. There are still a couple of things on the right wall that need to be discarded.
The empty hangers are certainly multiplying, but it still looks like I haven't made a dent in the amount of clothes still in the closet.

If I spill commassie blue down the front of a pair of $25 khakis, I'm going to cuss and when I get home I'll pull another pair out that I bought in bulk and toss these. If I spill it down the front of a pair of $200 slacks, I'll cry, toss the slacks because they'd be ruined and go out and pay $25 for a pair of khakis to replace them. I agree that in some categories it doesn't make sense to spend a lot. On the myfitnesspal site, I see posts from women asking where to buy "cute workout clothes". I have frumpy workout clothes- whatever shorts I can find that aren't made in objectionable countries (China or Bangladeesh) and one of about 100 promotional T-shirts that I've gotten for free over the years. If I'm out in cold weather I have a hoodie my mother gave me when I was visiting her, a pair of sweatpants DH got me at the thrift store and, if necessary, the hat I knitted myself from yarn I bought from the lady who spun it. I'm going to sweat and these clothes will get washed a lot. I'm not trying to attract guys at the gym- I have a perfectly good husband. No reason to pay LuLeMon prices.

Some I just have this silly attachment to, and it's prevented me from getting rid of them years ago, rather like the silk pants suit....14 years and never been worn!
Now for the other questions: I'm retired, don't need work clothes, dressy clothes I haven't needed in years, play clothes? no sure what your definition of those are, don't paint, we hire things done. Don't workout other than a walk outside with DH. Accessories like my jewelry are off limits as are the shoes

I've often wondered about those posts. While I don't want to look like a complete hag at the gym, I'm not seeing the problem with wearing black yoga pants and a t-shirt. And I can buy those at just about any store I ever go into, in every price range.

I think some people feel better in cute workout clothes. Especially doing races and group classes, hiking etc. also, some workout clothes are moisture-wicking, which helps.
I don't wear tshirts to workout, because... well, I don't wear tshirts at all. I buy yoga pants and workout tops. I get mine on the cheap at places like Old Navy and Target. They are decent enough that I can run errands in them and not look like a slob. also, I can go hiking and be out in public and not feel self conscious. and yeah, the moisture wicking in the summer is nice.

I guess I should clarify, lol.
I get not wanting to look like a slob or freak when working out. I don't understand not knowing where to get "cute" workout clothes. Walmart, Target, Kohls, Macy's, Sears, JCPenney, Old Navy, Neiman Marcus, and just about every other department store has workout clothes.
You have to be a moron not to be able to know where to get some.
I also don't see the need to look "cute." Like I said, yoga pants and a tank or tee is sufficient. They can be as cute and not cute as you want.
And I agree on the moisture wicking stuff.

Yes to all of that! Especially with the group aspect, there are always photos and often you go for food after a hike/race. Looking great is a stretch, but it doesn't hurt to look presentable enough for public. Also, working out in baggy sweaty clothes is not comfortable. It's a recipe for chafing.

I do turbo kick classes, and if I'm wearing a baggy tee, I'd get caught in it when you do some of the floor moves.

I just put one thing back on a hanger. I decided to save my fluffy PJs. I decided they would be the perfect thing to wear whenever the power goes out. I still need to do the left lower rack where some jackets are.

What you need is someone like me, ruthless. I do it to DD all the time. I look in her closet, it's full of STUFF. She doesn't even know what she has anymore. So when I'm there and she isn't slammed with school, I sit on her bed and judge what stays and what goes. It's like being QUEEN!

Before my Mom was in assisted living, my SIL would come over and go thru her clothes for her.
When we were in the downsize/throw it out mode last year, a few times I just told my DH to do whatever he wanted with certain things. I'd go into another room or downstairs so I didn't have to watch it. Funny now, I can't tell anyone what those treasures were.

DH is not allowed to sort my wardrobe. Somehow I'd end up with all cammo T-shirts despite not currently owning a single one. He desperately needs a closet clean out but he goes insane and insists he'll "wear that someday!" Yet I got rid of two garbage bags of his clothing that I collected off the closet floor and he didn't even notice. Maybe I just need to stop asking.

My mom told me to do this ages ago, especially for men's underwear. They will wear it until it rots off their body. She says just throw it out and replace it with new that you wash. They'll never know.

Besides, who is going to be the person you need. The one that says that doesn't fit or that color is awful or shoulder pads are so 80s?

They'll never know. I swear every week I see hubs' old underwear in the trash, but I certainly don't see him running out and buying more! Also, this thread is doing nothing but making me want to buy more clothes. I do need to purge some more pre-weight loss items (it has been two years, so it's safe) and I'll have empty, lonely hangers! I have to pack for our trip to Aruba on Sunday. Thank god I'll need all summer clothes! That will save room.
