I'd love to be able to wear a maxi dress. I'm short and stocky. I look like a sack of potatoes.

Give me some ideas of where, PLEASE! I can find high-quality but trying to find the bolded seems impossible. The American Apparel chain sells clothes made in the US. Some of the Chico's Travelers line is also made in the US. I found a brand of shoes I like (Thierry Rabotin) made in Italy. I've gradually added business clothes ordered through a local tailor and made in Chicago. DH's bathrobe was made in the US- on my sewing machine! We went through 6 stores, from the moderate to the upscale "boutique" sections in Macy's, and the bathrobes were all made in China. My computer bag is a Trager- I did a Search on "Computer bags made in the USA" and found them. Granted, I'm not personally in the workrooms and the conditions in Italy and the US are probably miserable compared to my nice, clean office job, but I think there's a better chance they're being treated and compensated decently.

I couldn't have a a 40 hanger closet because I hang up just about everything I may wear to work. If I fold things like tanks, sweaters, or my nice t-shirts I feel like they need to be ironed before I wear them and I simply don't have time for that. Besides 40 hangers of clothes plus what is on her shelves can still be quite a closetful. Not to mention, you can hang two pair of pants on a regular hanger. I used to pack away things at the end of each season and purge when I pulled them back out but with the see saw weather we have in VA now, I don't bother packing stuff away anymore. I wear layers when its cold and still like to have a sweater on hand in the warm weather because of how sensitive I can be to AC temps so probably 90% of my wardrobe is worn all year. I toss things when they are worn out/shrink and add new stuff when I see something I like. I do need to get some new stuff for summer this year. I've gained more weight and I've developed more dimples on my legs so my regular shorts are a no go. Not sure what I'm going to do since I'm not a fan of capris - skirts maybe? Swimwear isn't an issues since I can go a couple years and never see a pool or the beach in person. Plus, I need new sandals and flip flops since what I have has seen better days.

I just came back from Dillards. I found a Jones of NY black/grey/cream tweed zipper front jacket on sale @ 65% off, it cost me $48. Also found a high neck long sleeve black T on clearance for $8. Since I already have so many black clothes it makes sense to have that as my main color.
I did look at scarves,, but I'm one of those people who have no neck, so I decided I'm better off with jewelry as a pop of color rather than trying a scarf. I would probably end up covering my chin and mouth with the darn thing.
I'm taking deep breaths and will tip toe into the closet. I do have one silk pants suit from the year 2000 that has never been worn. Maybe it should be the first thing to go?

Ladies, I keep hearing the advice to "put together a basic outfit, and then accessorize with a cute scarf to add a splash of color!" Ok. How the eff does one wear a scarf? (Seriously. I think I am lacking the scarf gene.) Also... is there a minimum age, for one? The only ladies I've seen pulling off a scarf in a way that looks decent to me, look like this gal: or this one: Given that I have a few decades to go before I can rock the "mature, classy lady wearing a scarf before heading out to a polo match" look, what are my options? (I'm 32.) I really feel like I'm missing out, because I can never make sense of the 'accessorize with a scarf!' advice. Thanks in advance. (Pics will go a long way in helping me understand this, so please post pics or at least links if you reply!)

I wear scarves on a regular basis. You can google "ways to tie a scarf" and get dozens of examples. I have 3 go to ways I wear them... some people here get really intricate with their scarf tying!

I've bought a few scarves in bold colors and fun patterns... (one is a leopard print the other a black and white giraffe print)... I buy them on the longer side in a non-satin fabric and wear mine loosely "tied" just below the bust line. (just one loop through, not an actual knot). If you have a jacket or sweater, the scarve actually looks more like a blouse than a scarf if that makes sense. I'll see if I can find a picture of the way I wear mine. Not to get to personal here but are you large, medium, or small busted? I see a lot of the younger set pulling off scarves this year, including infinity scarves, and love the look. I wear a lot of long sleeved t-shirts and a scarf would definately dress those up. BUT I have a bust that is 36" around the fullest part (32 D/DD depending on bra style) and have always avoided anything that draws attention to it. Am I just giving in to my old HS insecurities or am I right to avoid this trend? And to give an example of what I dealt with in HS: I wore the polo shirts from JC Penney in the early 80's. Izod's were the true trend but not something my parents could afford. The JCP shirts had a polo player or horse on them instead of the alligator. I was also pretty much as well endowed as I am now, probably a little more. One day In Algebra class in 9th grade the boy who sat in front of me was turned around chatting with his buddy who sat next to me. Suddenly he pointed to me and told his friend to look, it was horse jumping over a mountain. I did see the humor and it wasn't said to be mean but I was still mortified.

The top left yellow one, of the link you posted but deleted? Hmmmm. My boobs are on the bigger side, and I wonder if that wouldn't leave me looking like I left the house with a towel around my neck...? I get what you're saying about it looking like a blouse, if you've got a jacket/blazer on. I think this would require a very thin material (silk?) scarf, though.... I think I need to go to Macy's, grab 50 scarves, and spend an afternoon in front of their full-length mirror, just experimenting. Thank you!

The silk pants suit ( can't believe after 14 years of moving it from house to house, even had it dry cleaned once) and I've never worn it.....It is now in the throw it out pile. Added to that is: 7 pr. of pants, 2 mock turtle neck, 2 summer robes, 2 blouses & 6 knit tops.

Am I just giving in to my old HS insecurities or am I right to avoid this trend? Exactly my thoughts as well..... Maybe we're just not meant to wear scarves? I mean, it's not like I'm ashamed of my body type, but it's definitely hourglassy, and sometimes things that pile up on top of boobs just makes them look 'hefty'... know what I mean? I always thought this looked kinda pretty (and I have a neck that this would work on), but is this terribly unfashionable, or too 'flight attendant'-esque?

That's fine and good if you work in a position where the likelihood of you ruining clothes is slim. I'm not. If I spill commassie blue down the front of a pair of $25 khakis, I'm going to cuss and when I get home I'll pull another pair out that I bought in bulk and toss these. If I spill it down the front of a pair of $200 slacks, I'll cry, toss the slacks because they'd be ruined and go out and pay $25 for a pair of khakis to replace them.

I have 3 go to ways I wear them... some people here get really intricate with their scarf tying! Infinity scarves can definitely be cute, but I always thought they looked better as outerwear (like... a scarf to actually protect your neck from the cold) rather than as an indoor outfit accessory. You have three ways to wear them and I'm struggling to come up with ONE... wow. And I definitely googled 'ways to tie a scarf'... and half the results just look sloppy to me, I guess. And the other half, I'd feel self-conscious that I'm wearing a style from the 80's. I guess I just need to get over myself and take the plunge, huh?

I couldn't get the link to work for me so I deleted my post.. but yes.. that one. I'm a 36C and I actually think it minimizes a bit when you tie it lower. But I'm 5'6" and do have somewhat broad shoulders though so am pretty proportionate. I definitely don't think it draws attention to my chest. A lighter more chiffon or silk type fabric would definitely be less bulky. Ok, this makes sense. Thank you! I will def try this.

And can you wear this with a normal white buttoned shirt, or must it be with a smooth-fronted shell type thing?

I have now tossed another 11 pieces for a grand total of 30. Ten more, and instead of having only 40 hangers left, I will have emptied 40 hangers.

The second pic and the way MM describes is probably the only way I'd even attempt the scarf trend. I definately couldn't do the ones close up on my neck. I get a choking feeling from turtle necks and high necked tees, I know that would drive me nuts.

I wear vneck, scoup neck or boat neck. I hate shirts around my neck, but it doesn't bother me to have the scarf. Just give it a try and see.

Great! I have all of my Moms silk scarves. Most are not big enough to do a lot with them, but after I get thru the with closet I'll take a look at them. Some might work. My Mom usually wore them as shawl over a suit or winter coat.

I have now filled 2 trash bags. My closet has 42 less things in it than when I started. I'm not done yet.....my DH just stood there and grinned at me. He also walked into the closet and said it doesn't look any different yet. Darn him, he's right.

Ok, so I dug a scarf that my (infinitely more fashionable) sis gave me out of the closet, and it appears that I've mastered "the pretzel". Success! Also, it's a lovely blend of pastel green and blue stripes... perfect for spring! Booyah! Thanks for all the help/encouragement.
Onwards and upwards! (I'm sure I have a couple more scarves shoved somewhere?)
