A federal judge in May ordered Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio to ensure that his deputies stop using race when making law enforcement decisions.
PHOENIX — A controversial Arizona sheriff is demanding that the U.S. government pay an estimated $39 million to cover the costs of complying with a federal court order that found his deputies had racially profiled Latino drivers, officials said on Friday.
Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, seen as a divisive figure in the national debate on immigration reform, says the government is to blame for improperly training his staff in conducting crime suppression operations that led to the sanctions, and should reimburse the county for money to be spent on remedies.
"It is neither appropriate nor fair that the taxpayers of Maricopa County be responsible for the costs and expenses incurred in this matter," he wrote in the letter, sent late on Thursday to U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder and the general counsel for Immigration and Customs Enforcement in Phoenix.
Rest of story here: Ariz. sheriff asks feds to pay racial profiling compliance costs
So according to Joe, he was not responsible for training his own employees. Give me a break. Let it be a lesson to the citizens of Maricopa County not to let idiots like Joe rule without question. Pay up citizens.

Joe is just being Joe. He never got that demigod thing down right, and now he is too old to even try. He would be a really scary guy if he didn't already have one foot in the grave.

An ex-employee of mine worked at a business that destroyed county paperwork, at the same time during the early stages of the investigation Joe was ordered to turn over all materials related to their stops. The Sheriff's SWAT team drops by with their Armored Assault Vehicle to shred hard drives, not once but to shred the pieces again. Wonder what was on those hard drives that required the fully armed SWAT team to make sure they were destroyed ?

I think after he leaves office/dies we will find out just how corrupt he is. There are a lot of rumors now, I'm wondering how many will be proven true later.

I like Joe. I would be one of the majority who votes for him if I lived there. And you would be one of those paying part of the $29 million to comply with the court order for his department's racial profiling.

I am one of the majority that voted for him several times. He lives in this town and is a good neighbor.

This is also said about bho.

This is also said about bho. I'm sure they are said about most politicians. The only difference with me and Joe is that I'm adjacent to the legal community here, and know many public figures. Some are good friends and I trust them, and they are the ones that have a good deal of inside knowledge. So, my source is credible to me. The people I know that are in the bho circle have not given me any reason to believe he is corrupt - mostly because they are supporters, and not nearly as close to the POTUS as some of my friends are to Joe.

If anyone in the legal community is discussing details of any case or person under investigation outside of the courtroom, sorry - their credibility just took a huge nosedive with me. My sister works for a DA's office and will not discuss cases in any type of detail even AFTER the trial has completed.

i am wondering why people like him. is it his failure to investigate sex crimes? the racial profiling? his gleeful support of jail overcrowding? the improper clearing of well over half of the cases brought before MSCO? or is it the abuse of power that everyone loves so much?
there must be something i am missing.

Going to be paying for his actions for a long time. How many millions has he cost the taxpayers so far? Ironic in this instance he writes a letter concerned about the taxpayers. If he was really concerned he would resign.

Come to think of it that may be why he is popular with the conservatives- they will spare no expense chasing ideological windmills. Fiscal responsibility has always been an afterthought with those folks.

i HAVE to be missing something, because everything i read about him (no, not the MSM) makes him look pretty bad.
anyone?
please don't disappoint me by saying "because he pisses liberals off". that is a shitty excuse for liking someone.

Sheriff Joe studied politics in Louisiana. Fortunately for us, he was out chasing Jose' on the day of the lecture where they teach how to use political power to get elected as governor.
He should not be blamed for neglecting to train his staff to be in compliance with federal law. He was busy proving that Obama's birth certificate was fraudulent.

One of the things a lot of people liked about Sheriff Joe is that he was essentially the only person in the country that seemed to actually be trying to lower the cost of jails and prisons. Every other state and locality sees those costs go up every year like clockwork, at a faster rate than inflation, and sits by doing nothing. The tent city was a little nutty, but at least it was something.

But seriously, sheriff joe done good sound bites to make people think he's "tough on crime" and not coddling criminals. Things like tent jails, physical labor, no TV wows the crowds, but he never mentions that his "guests" are denizens of the county jail, who are convicted of misdemeanors, low level felonies, or are awaiting trial, so,technically not guilty.

They're also volunteers. None of the tent city inmates are housed there without choosing it over the local jail.

ok. i get it. so, he is tough on crime in a state that allows unlimited straw purchases of weapons.
so, if i am an coke dealer, i can literally buy 50 assault weapons a day until i, and my army of the undead, run roughshod over Phoenix. i would like to see him tough that one out.

Don't forget the $50 million+ paid out for lawsuits because of him or the $99 million in misappropriated funds that Joe spent.
