No. You can get away with it if you're over 50, or you wear a suit jacket that hides it. It's not quite as bad as wearing a fanny pack, but it's close.

HA! I thought the same thing!! I third this. (Sorry, Phoenix!) (Also, if your phone is too bulky to fit in a pocket, either you bought your phone in 1997 or your pants are too tight.)

Most days I have my laptop bag, purse and lunch bag. If I am hitting the gym after work I also have a gym bag.

I use this: www.thirtyonegifts.com/catalog/product/19/catid/21/swid/941a/
It's the ThirtyOne Cindy Tote. Perfect size. I have paperwork in there, my kindle, my lunch bag, cough drops, Tylenol, calendar, chapstick, etc. When I bring my laptop home with me I put it in a little zipper case and through the in there too. Serious- the perfect size, everything fits in there and isn't too heavy.
I sit at a desk all day so I'll balance my checkbook at work, pay bills, etc. No one cares what I do to fill my day provided I'm here when people need me and my work gets done. Next week I will be the only person in the building. This week the bossman was here a couple of the days but everyone else was gone.
Some weeks I can be in and out of the office and some days I walk in the door at 7:30 and don't leave again until 4:30.
I usually go to the gym in the evenings after supper so I change at home, drive there, workout and then drive back home- so the bag doesn't stay with me at work.

He still clips his on his belt. Of course, it's a stupid blackberry, so it doesn't fit in his pocket worth a damn. It does look totally nerdy, though.

Crap, why doesn't anyone ever tell me these things. I'm not a big fan of carrying things in my pockets, at least bulky items. I don't know, I guess I won't wear my cell phone on my belt when I go out for social activites. I may still wear it at work though, my shirt hides it anyway. Since this revelation has thrown into question everything I thought about fashion, or at least carrying stuff. I guess I should put it out there that I carry my wallet in my front left pocket, not in the back pocket because I hate sitting on a bulky wallet. IS THAT taboo too?

No, but it probably looks like you're carrying two cell phones. One in your front pocket and one on your belt. Take all the crap out of your wallet so it's not bulky and put it in your back pocket. Now take the cell phone off your belt and put it in place of the wallet.

I usually carry a reusable shopping bag . . . mostly Publix but I have tons of these from every store. That's for papers, etc. I keep my lunch in a throwaway Walmart sack.
I'm a little more upscale now, though, since I won a Vera Bradley reusable shopping bag with matching lanyard at the Christmas luncheon.

Phone gets other pocket

I carry my purse and most days a messenger type bag that has my ipad, planner (yes dammit I still carry a planner even with everything on my phone, I like looking at the whole month at once), paperwork I might need to take to the bank or the accountant, school forms I need to fill out, etc.

The calendar app on your phone doesn't show the whole month at once?

It does, but not the detail for each day, I have to click on each day to see what meetings or appointments I have. I'm old, I like my old school planner.

I have everything on my phone but I love my paper day planner. I love physically writing things down. I carry my purse and lunch bag. On gym days I carry my purse and gym back. A lot of people use public transit so briefcases, laptop bags, extra bags are the norm.

I carry a lunch bag and a laptop bag/briefcase to and from work every day. We are not allowed to leave our laptops at the office. If you're important enough to have a laptop, you're important enough to work from home in case of emergency, so the reasoning goes. I keep all my purse items in my briefcase as well - lipstick, wallet, etc. I try and keep everything slimmed down as much as possible to reduce strain on my back. Phoenix - you have a belt clip for your cell phone? Have you considered this may be part of why you don't date much? . I was convinced that phonenix was a woman. I think the statement stands! Man or woman!

Into work - bag with my lunch in it, bag with my gym clothes in it, over the shoulder messenger bag that carries my small purse, paperwork, pager, ID cards, etc.
I also have to bring a bag with DD's crap in it, too, lunch, diapers, blankies, spare clothes, etc.
I look ridiculous in the morning walking to the car.

honey - her daycare doesn't let you leave things like that there? That would be annoying to pack a bag every day for the kiddo too!

But it seems like every day she either needs one or the other. And on Fridays we take home blankies to wash for the weekend. Lunch every day is fresh. So sometimes it's only 1 bag for her but sometimes it's 2.

. I was convinced that phonenix was a woman. I think the statement stands! Man or woman! Given that women's pants are not designed to put anything thicker than a credit card in the pocket and that I am expected to have it on me at all times, the only two options I've found are belt clip or carry it by hand to every meeting. Most of my coworkers opt for the second, but I would leave it behind on a regular basis. So I stand with you, phoenix!

Women's clothes have no pockets because you all carry around purses anyway. Men's pants have totally adequate pockets for a cell phone, wallet, money clip, or a business card case.
The only people that should be walking around with stuff clipped to their waist are police officers, Batman, and people so old they don't give a shit anymore.

Our IT guys all run around with their blackberries clipped to their belt.
to answer the question... no briefcase. I just carry my bag- it is large enough to bring in my lunch and any papers I might need if i work from home.

A good fashion rule in general is that if IT guys are doing it, it's ridiculously unfashionable. Like, "Oh my god can you believe that guy left the house like that?!?" unfashionable.

LOL! I'm sooo not. Former IT guy remember. I'm speaking from experience, and not the good kind. I was that "I can't believe he left the house in that" guy. After 14 years of my wife vetoing my fashion choices I'm starting to get there though.
Kind of...
I'm currently wearing a Reyn Spooner hawaiin shirt. Cream color with red, blue, and white toy cars, trucks, boats, and planes all over it. It's offensively ugly.
