Whatever. Go ahead and attack everything I say. It seems to bring you joy. I guess you need to get that somewhere.

I'm with Phoenix. I just don't get the appeal of drinking. I did it some in my misspent youth but I got married on my 21st bday and found out I was pregnant on my 22nd bday. No matter how late I stayed out the night before my kid was going to wake me up bright and early the next day. Plus I had to be to work by 6am Monday- Friday and DH he to be to work by 6am Tuesday - Saturday. So at most we could go out Saturday night but again- kid was still going to be up at 6am Sunday morning. So we just never got in the habit of drinking.
Now DH has to be able to drive his company vehicle for his job- DUI would result in his immediate termination. So when we go out with friends I never drink so I can be the sober driver. DS always has parties whenever we have parties. I don't drink then because I figure making sure there is a sober, responsible adult there is the least I owe the parents of the kids at my house. Obviously DS and his friends are all sober too. Not delusional, I just know my kid.
So yeah- all of my friends drink but I don't. They don't care or harass me. Mostly they'll feel bad and go out of their way to make sure there is something non-alcoholic for me to drink. Doesn't phase them or me at all. Honestly it seems like a waste of money to me. I don't drink soda and will occasionally have a lemon-aide if we are out to dinner but 98% of the time I only drink water. All day every day.

I agree with sheilaincali. I don't drink for those same reasons. An occasional glass of wine at home or out to eat, sure. But very seldom.
Like most parents of teenagers we didn't encourage our kids to drink, of course, but we knew they'd be exposed to it and would experiment, so we told them that no matter what, always call us for a ride home should they need one. I decided then I never wanted them to call and me be unable to go get them because I was drinking.
And whenever we go out I'm always the designated driver. I just prefer it.

I'm surprised by the number of non-drinkers and people that have only been drunk "once" before. Very few people in my personal circle of friends/family don't drink and most of those that don't have given it up because they're alcoholics or there's a court order.

I'm nerdy enough to try it twice, just to be sure... I'm pretty sure I was impaired enough to be considered drunk, but I didn't feel anything fun about it... I suppose I looked pretty funny having trouble standing up straight, but I wasn't entertained...

Well alcohol is an acquired taste. Usually people start with something cheap, or go over board the first time and that can be quite deterring, so it does make sense in a way that people choose to be teetotalers. I didn't get the appeal of drinking until I did a study abroad trip to Italy. Wine with meals, visiting wineries, sample here, sample there, it finally clicked, and I've grown to love it.

Very few people in my personal circle of friends/family don't drink and most of those that don't have given it up because they're alcoholics or there's a court order. Don't get me wrong- I've been drunk on more than one occasion. I've been thrown out of bars for getting into a fight with a little person, cut off by the bartender, flashed all of my co-workers at someone's 21st bday party, etc.
I don't get enjoyment out of drinking. I don't get a pleasant buzz. I go from nothing, to sick to my stomach and dizzy to drunk. I have to power through the sick to my stomach phase to get to the drunk phase. It seems dumb to me. Why keep drinking if it makes me feel poorly? Keep drinking to hit the drunk phase so I can feel even worse the next day?
No thanks. BTDT.
DH was raised by alcoholics who turned to alcohol for everything and had a drinking problem in college. Now he can socially drink within moderation but we don't usually keep booze in the house. He's ok if we go to BW3's with a group of friends and he has a couple of beers and chicken wings. If he started having 2 beers a day after work it, unchecked it would take him maybe a month to hit the point in which he was drinking a 6 pack or more a night. He has a very addictive personality and knows his limits and has asked me to help remind him of his limits. He knows that the reality is that he could very easily develop a serious drinking problem. For many years he didn't drink at all so it seemed rude of me to drink.
It's just not something I ever really got into the habit of doing so aside from half a dozen drunken nights mentioned above I don't miss it at all.
I think in the past 3 years I've had one Mike's Hard Lemonaide

Well, I had a rough day at work, then picked up my dog's ashes and signed my divorce papers on the way home. The kids were driving me up the wall so after the younger was in bed I finished off the bottle of Chardonnay that someone left in my fridge over Christmas (it was just one glass). It was sweet as hell, but I feel better now. It was between the wine and Diet Pepsi and Pop Tarts. I'm thinking of moving on to them after second son goes to bed.

Ditto to the other comments. Here's to hoping that 2014 is a great year for you. Fingers crossed all the crappy stuff gets out of the way in January and the rest of your year is smooth sailing.

Thanks. I have a very uneasy feeling that it's going to get worse before it gets better though. Right now he's in jail so I have peace, and I don't need to worry (about me or him), but the clock is ticking. 21 more days.

I find the list of reasons why alcohol is appealing to be almost endless.
