To me it tastes disgusting. I only drink it on occasion for the effect. I don't even like the effect. The effect, for me, is dizziness followed by nausea, followed by a communion with the porcelain throne. No, thanks!

I think in moderation, a person can learn to appreciate the flavors of an aperitif or drink.
It's one thing to learn to sense the tastes, aromas, and pairings of alcoholic beverages with foods or desserts, and the appreciation of a good cocktail or wine, and another to just drink "booze" to get plastered.
You either enjoy the taste of the alcoholic beverage of your choice on occasion and in the right setting, or the enrichment it can bring to a culinary dish (wine for example), or even drinking cocktails in a social setting (and knowing how to control it), or you use it to "escape" from other demons.
I know people who fall into all spectrums on that scale. I'll stick with the ones who appreciate the positives of drink and don't abuse it, rather than those who live for the negatives (problem drinkers/alcoholics).

Like MPL, as I've gotten older, my tolerance has really, really declined. That's probably a good thing. I like an occasional COLD beer (Beck's). I love a nice buttery Chardonnay but 2 glasses get me really buzzed and giddy and 3 make me sick. I also find that if I drink 2 glasses of wine I am awake for the rest of the night 2 hours after I go to bed.
Stupid kidneys or liver or whatever. Not that I need to party hard, but it would be nice to go out for a nice dinner and really enjoy those 2-3 glasses of wine with the dinner. I've tried making sure to eat a little beforehand, making sure that I am well-hydrated, etc. I just can't metabolize the stuff.
So, Phoenix, while you may not get the appeal, know that you're not alone in not imbibing or at least not alone in getting plastered.

People just have different tastes. I love wine and liquor and a few beers.
Most people like sodas... I don't.

I find that I have to either have a glass of wine, or a sweet snack an hour or so after dinner. I have determined that I am more addicted to the sugar of alcohol than anything else. But I do love that it makes me sleepy. Especially if I have just one small glass. I fall asleep really quickly, and stay asleep. If I have 3 or 4 glasses I am almost guaranteed to be up for a significant period of time in the middle of the night. So, 1 glass gives me the sugar and the sleepy. 2 gives me some unhealthy feeling of escapism. And more than that makes me miserable. Guess how many I drank on Saturday?

The smell of beer makes me nauseous. Too many bad memories associated with being around alcoholic family members growing up. Red wine tastes horribly bitter and unpleasant to me; white wine isn't much better. I never got in the habit of drinking alcohol since none of it tasted good.
Most of my family members have lost 20+ years of their lives to excessive drinking. I recognize that I probably have some traits of an addictive personality and with my family history I haven't tried too hard to find any type of alcohol I might like. My family spent their youth on alcohol, maybe I'll be different and spend my retirement on alcohol!

I like wine, especially if it has bubbles in it. I enjoy going to Napa on a beautiful day, going to a couple of wineries, having drinks, eating, and chattering with people.

Also makes annoying people more tolerable. It makes boring, annoying family get togethers more tolerable.

I love alcohol. Not in an alcoholic way but in an appreciation way. Everything has its own unique flavor profile and I love discovering new cocktail recipes or trying new wines, and I am very passionate about what I imbibe. I consider vodka the tofu of spirits - benign, lacking in definition, and boring on its own, but pair it with the right cocktail or infuse it with herbs and it takes on a whole new personality. Gin is my favorite to mix with, it has so much nuance and it creates a smooth, clean cocktail. Right now I love herbal cocktails and infused spirits. You won't see me putting chocolate, cream, sour mix or fake lime juice in one of my cocktails ! I love a great classic cocktail. I love scotch. I love whiskey. I love wine. I love how both complex and simple wines can be something to sing about. I love every little nuance between two completely different yet utterly amazing glasses of pinot noir. I really should have been a sommelier or a high-end bartender. [ ^^^ Exactly what she said. (I think gin is the great unappreciated spirit. Very rare to find a woman who enjoys it.)

because just drinking water gets boring. I don't drink soda, tea, coffee, juice (unless mixed with alcohol and must be diet so as to reduce calorie and carb count)
I like the taste of certain beers, they are creamy and dark and have hints of chocolate. my love of craft beers means $$$ when we go out when other people are content ordering the $5 pitcher of miller light. barf....
I love trying different wines. they are yummy
Martinis!!!!!!! Mohitos!!! and OMG Sangria, I make one so good, it's deadly
and i enjoy getting buzzed with my penguins and watching them cause trouble

alcohol has been proven to be the only thing that can change a woman's mind. It is truly the liquid of the gods.

LOL - I love how you will drink dark craft beers, but not regular soda. There is probably more calories and carbs in the beer than a can of coke.

I was drinking a dark stout the othernight and I mistakenly looked up the calorie count online while I was drinking it. One 12 oz bottle was 475 calories.

I can still remember how shocked and sad I was when I discovered the calorie count of my favorite Hefeweissen (sp?).
I don't drink soda, either, but that's only partly to do with the calories. And if I got to indulge in one thing, I'd choose beer over soda, but still wouldn't drink the beer that often. Unless it's hot. Which it is for most of the year here, luckily.

Right? I blame 30 extra pounds from the 90's on beer consumption-and it was considered a light beer. Ha! <--------- 6 pack

I like a lot of liquors, but gin is just one I can't stand unless it's well covered up. Like my long beaches (long island but cran instead of coke), although I have gotten one that was heavy on gin and wasn't to please by it. I'm surprised since there's so many notes to gin. The only thing I can think of is juniper is a big flavor/smell in it and I must be slightly traumatized from falling into those prickly, painful bushes often as a child to ever like that smell.

Some of us get a feeling of euphoria from alcohol that is amazing. I guess you don't have that gene. ...me, neither... ...Phoenix, like you I also tried to get drunk (twice) just to see what it was like... both times there was no real boost but I definitely could feel the "impairment" affect... oh, well...

That is a perfectly valid reason to drink soda and not beer. However, alicia said specifically that she only drinks diet soda because of the calorie count. I also agree that if you are going to drink the beer anyway, giving up soda won't hurt your health. But if you are substituting beer for your rum & coke - it is basically a wash. Not a big deal. I don't drink much soda, because it was several hundred calories I could do without. But I haven't given up wine, which is probably the same.

Yes, margaritas were my favorite drink and I had them every night. Then I looked up the calorie count. I haven't had one in probably two years now. I love alcohol. I love the flavors. But, I don't love the calories and I don't particularly like the buzz. I only drink 1-2 drinks/month now (vs 1-2/day six months ago) just because of the calories.

Sentence thyme4change said: I love how you will drink dark craft beers, but not regular soda
has NOTHING to do with alicia said specifically that she only drinks diet soda because of the calorie count.
