Sometimes I'll purposefully use alcohol to lower my guard enough so I'm not so worried about keeping it all together and shit after a break up that I end up bawling my eyes out. It's very cathartic, and at least after a break up I find it helpful - I need one big breakdown to get it all out dam-breaking style - it can un-numb me to an extent. You must remember to warn your friends that's what's going to happen though, even if they don't believe you until your mid breakdown.

... 4) Alcohol is also a neat way to dull any really severe negative feelings you have. Your partner of 10 years just broke up with you for someone younger and hotter? You got fired? If you have a lot of drinks, you will either temporarily forget (usually at the point where you've had enough that you can't remember much more than where the bottle is), or the alcohol will (again) wear down those boundaries and walls that people have and they can have a sobbing/screaming fit for a while. Either one is temporarily helpful, though doesn't do much in the long run. I'm surprised at the number of people on the board who don't "get" anything from alcohol. But then again, I'm mostly Irish, so... I had heard that, but the one time I tried it, it just intensified the negative feelings. It was awful.

And boring people more attractive too. as well as turning ugly people pretty. The lack of available housing during the 1980 Lake Placid Olympics was a major issue for the area. One of the jokes that went around during that time was "Who is a perfect '10' in Lake Placid? "A '4' who owns a condo."

I can't drink alcohol. My body cannot metabolize it.
I'm really a type A person who gets anxious. I wish often that I could smoke pot like I did in college. It would chill me out.
But acquiring pot would require me to know people who could provide it, and I don't. Besides I'm breastfeeding.
I want to move to Denver to buy recreational legal pot.
Since, I can't go around saying that I want to smoke pot, I say I wish I could drink.

People have different tastes. The idea of having soda with most meals is abhorrent to me. Give me water or wine and I'm set.

I don't really enjoy the taste of alcohol either. I like rum and coke, when there is more coke than rum. I did discover a drink I liked (can't remember the name). It was something like rum, pineapple juice, grenadine, cranberry juice. It was tasty! I guess it just takes until you discover what you like. However, I usually just stick to iced tea.

Sorry if this question is obvious, but seriously, I don't get why alcoholic beverages are appealing. Don't get me wrong, I'm not a square or anything. I have no moral objection to people drinking as long as they aren't putting others at risk (i.e. drunk driving) or otherwise are being self destructive. However, adult beverages seem to have a lot of allure for many, many people, even non alcoholics. But I just don't get it. Why is it so appealing to people? I've had beer, I've had wine, I've had hard liquior, and honestly, I'm not a huge fan of any of it. I'll drink on occasion, usually if I'm visiting someone and they offer it, just for a bit of variety, but it never really "does anything" for me. I even got drunk once on purpose to see if it was as great as says it is, but it sucked. I have no idea why every other college kid (and even adults) want to get smashed every weekend. So can you guys help me understand? What is so great about alcoholic beverages? I suppose it's good because I'm not likely to ever become an alcoholic, but I do want to know. I mean, some people drink every day, and some people go on vacations just to drink cheap booze. What's the point? Is there something wrong with me?YES? And you questioning it? You need to have your head checked. PRONTO! Report back what doctor said...Geez! I need a drink

I used to drink a lot, and loved it. I loved beer when mowing the lawn or grilling, wine with dinner, or long islands when out with my girlfriends. Then I had my first son at 33 and something happened to me biochemically. I still liked to drink, but I would get hung over a lot easier...a lot...and it was way worse when I was. But I still liked to drink and would chance it or figure it was worth it. Then I had son number 2 and whatever happened to me with son #1 was magnified. Now I seriously can be laid up for two days puking after just a few drinks. It's gotten to the point where it's lost it's appeal completely. There is something like 8 beers in my fridge that someone brought to a Christmas Eve party at my house and I haven't touched a one of them. This would have been unheard of 10 years ago! They would have been gone within a couple days. I think if someone offered me a white russian I'd probably take it, and I did put Kahlua in my coffee at Christmas, but other than that, I avoid it now. It's kind of a shame because it did relax me quite a bit, but on the other hand, I think I probably would have been drunk all summer with the year I had, so maybe it's for the best. How about...another son? Just try, isn't it worth it to get your love for booze back?

Oy vey! There is no acquiring a taste for Mogen David. Or Manischewitz. We drank it as kids at Passover, weddings and bar mitzvahs. Even then, I knew it was rotgut. My brothers got really plastered on it, though. I used to give them my servings, and watch them walk into the walls. Fun times.
Now, I collect wine, but I limit my consumption. I like a beer occasionally, and never developed a taste for spirits of any kind, even though we had an extensive bar in the basement of our childhood home, because the folks entertained a lot.

Alcohol doesn't do it for me either. I've been drunk once in my life. I enjoyed it at the time to some extent, but not enough to make it worthwhile to indulge in again. I'm partial to the fruity tropical type drinks like a fuzzy navel or strawberry daiquiri. I much prefer a virgin strawberry daiquiri. Now, a good milkshake does wonders. LOL.

I don't drink any more maybe never again, I just don't care about it. I drank a little until I was 18 then quit until 35 so had never tried most drinks. So I took a year to try all the drinks I ever heard of. I can tolerate rum and coke that is mostly coke. I like the sweet drinks but too many calories for what it is worth. So I got diabetes and decided alcohol is bad for me. I was having maybe one drink a year before and the only time I ever drank more than one in a day was when I was dating a guy who didn't drink. We would go to his house and I could drink all I wanted and trust him to take care of me. We would go out and he would drive so I could drink all I wanted. My current guy drinks so when we go out I drive and don't drink. I don't like beer or wine or whiskey and don't have things to make sweet fruity drinks and don't need the sugar. I like being in control of my brain and able to drive not stuck or depending on others. Now if someone wants me to try something I might try 1/4th of a drink.

I love alcohol. Not in an alcoholic way but in an appreciation way. Everything has its own unique flavor profile and I love discovering new cocktail recipes or trying new wines, and I am very passionate about what I imbibe. I consider vodka the tofu of spirits - benign, lacking in definition, and boring on its own, but pair it with the right cocktail or infuse it with herbs and it takes on a whole new personality. Gin is my favorite to mix with, it has so much nuance and it creates a smooth, clean cocktail. Right now I love herbal cocktails and infused spirits. You won't see me putting chocolate, cream, sour mix or fake lime juice in one of my cocktails! I love a great classic cocktail. I love scotch. I love whiskey. I love wine. I love how both complex and simple wines can be something to sing about. I love every little nuance between two completely different yet utterly amazing glasses of pinot noir.
I really should have been a sommelier or a high-end bartender.

I heard that generally the progression of alcohol beverages of choices goes like this: beer when you are young and those fruity wine coolers, then white wine by around age 25, then red wine, by the time you hit 40 you enjoy scotch and things like that. This is probably partly due to the fact that as you get older your taste buds become a little less sensitive, and as you get older you can afford the better stuff which tastes better. For example, we became scotch drinkers because at first we were rye and ginger ale drinkers, then found we liked Godfathers (whisky/amaretto), then moved to a light single malt like Glenfiddich..and now we have a good Scotch collection and are able to enjoy a nice smokey Laphroig. mmmmm
Also when we first tried gin, we had Beefeater gin. gag... then we tried Tanqueray..and there is such a huge difference in taste.
But you have to know when to stop. I've always wondered at people who go to a work function and because there is free alcohol, they need to drink it all. Past the nice relaxed, everyone is warm and amusing line it is just too much. My husband was on a business trip in Mexico City - they went out with some clients and he called it a night around 11. His partner stayed out, got plastered and got robbed. Don't think a few more drinks was worth it. Along with a long flight home with a hangover.

Taste yummy, especially the frozen ones. Eh, I don't find the taste that appealing. At least of anything I tried. I even got scotch on a plane once. Man, I wanted to throw up. That stuff was aweful. I don't like beer that much, but at least I can stomach it. I don't like any of it, either, Phoenix. I just don't like the taste of alcohol. I don't mind a glass of wine every now and then, but I could go the rest of my life without ever drinking it again and not feel I'd missed anything. None of it really tastes good to me. I'd rather have water, or a cup of tea, or a fruit juice.

I'm a drinker, but DH could have written the OP. I think our bodies must process alcohol differently, since he doesn't seem to get the enjoyment from it (others have summarized it well) I do. What mystifies me is how, at parties, people who see that he isn't drinking are absolutely insistent that he "just try one of these." Feels like an after-school special LOL, been there, done that. Drinkers can't stand to have someone around them not drinking. If you tell them you just don't care for it, then they can get really pushy about you "just trying this one particular drink." Are you kidding me? I'd be all "yay, we found a designated driver"! All joking aside, I have many recovering alcoholics in my family and I have learned that some people declining a drink might have a reason. So even though I think everyone should try my yummy drink, I would never push it on somekne

I think people are drawn to alcohol because they believe it helps them to relax or have more fun, whichever one the occasion calls for. I drink when I go out and I drink at home, especially after a rough day. I have a high tolerance, so I don't even get a buzz most of the time. Even when I want a buzz, I usually get tired of drinking before I get there. I've drank a whole bottle of wine before and been disappointed that I didn't even get close to tipsy. I don't drink beer. I haven't tasted one I like. I'd like to be a wine drinker, but I haven't found one I really like because I prefer it to be sweet. I drink hard liquor, but I prefer it mixed with something. There's almost always a bottle of cognac in my house. I like fruity cocktails when I'm out. I guess I drink just because, since a drink or 2 (or 3) doesn't do much for me and I rarely have several at one time. I don't think I know how to cook on my grill if I don't have a glass nearby.
