worldnews.nbcnews.com/_news/2013/12/23/22021111-uk-retailer-ms-faces-boycott-after-muslim-worker-refused-to-sell-alcohol?lite Thousands of customers threatened to boycott M&S, Britain's biggest clothing retailer that also sells food, after a till worker in a London store asked a customer to wait as she would not handle champagne and called for another staff member. Following a storm of protests on social media, M&S apologized for the "confusion," saying it was not M&S's policy to allow checkout staff to refuse to serve customers buying items like alcohol and pork which are forbidden in Islam. The shoe is firmly on the other foot. Of course in the USA we would pass a law protecting the rights of a Muslim to not sell such a product that goes against their faith Silly me, that only applies to Christians and birth control.

Was she hired as a cashier? If so she should not have accepted the job and should be let go or move duties. If it was a mistake she was at the register then don't let it happen again. I see it no different then if she was 17 selling alcohol in the states, they would just have to wait for another cashier to ring it up. But why so much anger over having to wait an extra 3 mins for another cashier. Am I missing something?

I thought that too- happens to me at the grocery store all of the time because the cashier is too young to scan the beer.
But that is a law- my take is if you cannot perform the job then we don't need you- that includes pharmacy clerks and birth control. If the entire pharmacy decides not to handle certain drugs- then that is a different story, just as a food store may decide not to sell alcohol.

Yes it seems so simple, yet it is a headline and a whole bunch misplaced anger for what? I don't know.

When you work for someone you either perform your job or you don't. If she has a religious issue with alcohol, then she needs ask to be moved to a different position or find a new job.

How about a pharmacist who refuses to sell over-the-counter Plan B One-Step emergency contraceptives because of their religious views?

If a person is hired for a job, they should be willing to perform all aspects of that job - even if it includes scanning a bottle of wine or 6-pack of beer.
When DH was working the oil patch & got sent to Saudi Arabia for a year, I went with him. Though we lived in a condominium in an "American Housing" community, if we went to the markets or restaurants/stores, we wives had to (as women) dress/cover up our heads according to their Muslim law.
Yet they expect to not have to live by the ways of life of the "Western World" when they come here. It's a double standard.

And if their religious beliefs conflict with their career choice, then they need to choose another career path.
Being a clerk is no big deal. The clerk who refused to scan the alcohol, could find a job in a store where it isn't on the inventory.
(And it's not like the store - or customer buying it - was forcing her to drink it. It's a bottle. Period. No different than scanning a bottle of water or a carton of milk - or a case of soda.

Tenn they make it sound like they are being over run with EU rejects. Immigration and the EU are the two biggest black holes today in Britain.

A nurse or doctor who are pro-life should find work at a catholic hospital.

She doesn't scan pork products or alcohol, but she calls a manager over while she continues to scan other items. The manager finishes scanning and rings me up, while she helps put bags in my cart. There is no delay in checking out, maybe a couple of seconds while the manager logs into the till. Life goes on.

The anger is caused because this is is just one of a line of stories of Muslims wanting preferential treatment.....at the expense of others....ie keeping customer waiting.
Its daft really.... because there are thousands of corner shops in Britain where Muslims sell alcohol and the fridges are full bacon and pork pies...because that's what people eat.
Its could be never ending...Hindu's can't sell beef...Catholics can only sell fish on a Friday...Jews can't work Saturdays and so on...but this never seems to happen
The public attitude is, if you cant sell the merchandise.....don't take the job.
M&S have faced a boycott campaign and have been forced to issue an apology.

The article I read yesterday stated the store announced they try to not put employees with certain "restrictions" in jobs that might create this situation and were working to see how this might happen. Sounds fair to me.

A nurse or doctor who are pro-life should find work at a catholic hospital. Correct! If a nurse doesn't want to participate in abortions and the hospital for which she works performs abortions, she has a choice: She can work for a hospital that doesn't perform abortions, or she can move off the maternity floor and into another area of medicine. A nurse can perform her duties anywhere. She only needs to refresh herself on the intricacies of the new area.
