My boss was bragging about how he always sends his siblings those Hickory Farms gifts. IMHO those are just overpriced processed foods.
At work I received a bound day planner from one of our customers. Does anyone still use those? Plus all the wall calenders and desk calenders from various vendors. My computer is on my desk, I don't even have room for a desk calender.

DH would love Hickory Farms. He eats every kind of sausage and like cheese & crackers, too.
A waste of money are those stupid Chia pets.

I don't have an actual day planner, but I have a simple spiralbound notebook that holds my whole life; lists, reminders, everything. As far as gifts that are a waste, I would say smelly bath soaps/lotions, etc

My ex used to love Hickory Farms. He would have really enjoyed receiving something from them.
I don't think that gifts like that are a "waste of money" because they aren't nice, etc. They are just extremely expensive for what they are. DH's go-to present is Fairy Tale brownies. They are, indeed, delicious. But at $50 for 8 or so brownies, they are really pricey. My sister's go-to present is an Edible arrangement. It does make a lovely centerpiece for our table tomorrow, and the fruit is good. But I wouldn't spend that much.
My go-to present is an Amazon giftcard. No one has ever asked me if they could return it.
ETA: I use a desk calendar. Yes, it is on my computer, but I'm not always on the computer. As a teacher, I actually have to get up from my desk and interact with the students. So when someone asks me if he/she can make up a test during sixth period, I can quickly glance and see if I have a conflict.
Mine is the month-at-a-glance type. Its an annual donation from the Armed Services Recruitment Center. I always choose Navy in honor of DH.

I send hickory farms baskets to the military personal overseas that I "adopt" every year. Every single time I get a response that would make you think I sent manna from heaven.
I can do without the crappy scented lotions. they do nothing for my skin and most of them give me a headache.

So, the gifts that are most a waste of money are those that do not match the recipient...
What should people give when they don't know the recipient well? Is there a truly universally good gift?

See, I would like Hickory Farms. Not good for you, but tasty, imho. And if I get lotions and things, I use them. I may use them on my feet if I don't like it anywhere else on my body, but I'll use them And we can always use hand soap in my classroom. I like gifts that I can use up, like body products or food. I am not a fan of gifts that take up space. I guess it all depends on the recipient.

I have some coworkers that are so particular about what they like. It has to be a certain brand, scent, color scheme, whatever. I really try to be a gracious gift receiver. And not take gifts so seriously!

My computer is on my desk, I don't even have room for a desk calender. LOL At work we get the (insert name of company here) book. That's what we call it " the **** book." For the past 25 years. We schedule all of our production in it. If you want to know if we are having white bread next Tuesday, look in the book. If I run out of something, I add it to the production schedule in the book. Despite the fact that most of the posters here work in an office, the whole world doesn't. There is still a need for pens and paper and calendars and other pedestrian materials. Manufacturing still happens in this country. And I like that the vendors I habitually deal with take some time to drop by during this busy season to offer me a bit of holiday cheer. I don't mind that they bring me useful items that happen to have their logos. Otherwise I have to pay money to the office supply store to buy the same thing they are giving me for free. Of course, (gasp) I work for a business where you actually have to call and talk to an actual person before you can place an order. And (double gasp!!!) sometimes we say no.

I'm terrible at choosing gifts, so I just don't give Christmas gifts. If it's not something the recipient really likes, it's just a waste of my money and/or time, and something they have to figure out what to do with. I don't like wasting my money, and I'd prefer other people not waste theirs buying me something I don't really want.
I do random things throughout the year. If a friend really likes the way my lotion smells, I might get her a bottle when I buy some more. A few weeks ago I bought my cousin a leopord print Santa hat as a silly gift because she looooves animal prints and I thought of her when I saw it. I bought her Mom a pink one with sequins on it because she was in the hospital at the time and she's a breast cancer survivor. They both laughed when I gave them to them. The laughs were worth the $10 even if they didn't wear them (they have lol). I can do things like that on the spur of the moment, but if I try to figure out a good GIFT, I go blank. If I buy something and try to save it for Christmas, I'd probably forget I bought it. Plus, I'm impatient and if I bought you something, I want to give it to you asap. I hope the people that matter know that I care, even if I don't give them Christmas gifts.

I know I have a few waiting under the tree, and I cannot WAIT to slather their delicious creamy goodness all over me... purrrr. ;-)

Malarky, what kind of orders would your company decline to do? Everything we do is done from scratch. So, deadlines for Mon/Tues were Dec 18h. And then because of volume, I advocated to call a halt to orders on Friday for Saturday and Sunday. We are at capacity. We have called in all our reserves. Ovens and staff are running 24/7. There is not a single surface left that is not engaged in production, including the lunch table. So if you call me and tell me that you are having 20 people for dinner on Cbristmas.... In the past two days, my self and a coworker decorated over 1,000 hand decorated cookies. DD helped me decorate 750 gingerbread people this morning. I'm only in charge of cookies and overall orders this year... This doesn't even begin to cover the other departments that offer handrolled croissants, muffins, scones, Danish, cupcakes, cakes, speciality cakes.. If I can't deliver the quality product I am known for, I won't promise anything at all.

I have sensitive skin, so I can't use a lot of scented soap or hand sanitizers. I regift them if I receive them. However, the kids & I LOVE the Hickory Farm Summer Sausage.
Gift cards or cash are always welcome here!

If you really want to give me a gift, make a donation to feed the poor. Send me a pretty Christmas card, and I am happy. I love the old timey ones that have the sparkles on them. A friend sent me a beautiful card this year, and it is my favorite gift. People always want to give me food, and I can't eat it. I just share with my coworkers, and watch them gain weight.

Lets see I got three hideous Christmas mugs, a tea pot that I will never use, one of those fancy ones from teavana when I asked for a Mr. Coffee that I make tea in. Mine died just before the holiday. An iron but no ironing board. Some other wierd stuff that I can t recall. When someone opens a gift and gives you either a blank or a WTF look, even after you explains what it's for, you've failed. Sometimes I wonder what possesses people. It's like they don't know you at all or buy you something they'd like with no thought that you aren't them.

I was watching the US Cellular commerical with the guy that buys his wife a scale, an oil painting and taxidermies her dead pet. How on earth did US Cellular get ahold of my husband?

We get those Hickory Farm gifts from my inlaws every year. We just throw it in the fridge and haul it out at our next Board Game night or something. Honestly we could care less and they'd be better off not sending up anything. But we haven't seen them since January 2009. She sends my DH a couple of FB messages a year- technically she posts on his wall since she doesn't understand private messages. The last one said "Did you hear that Johnny Smith died? He was such a drunk and an asshole- him dying is the best thing that ever happened to this family!" Have I mentioned that DH is FB friends with Johnny's two adult children, his granddaughter and his widow? He deleted her post and explained once again how to send a PM. She is sulking and hasn't responded since then- WOO HOO!!!!!! My mom thinks that all daughters/DILs and all grandsons are the same person. She one daughter will be collecting Christmas snowmen so she'll get us all one. Same with the grandson's= If one likes dinosaurs she'll get them all one. I hate clutter and my son is 15- doesn't have much in common with my 4 year old nephew. The bulk of what she gives us goes straight to goodwill the next day. I feel bad but it's nothing I will ever use. She is very sensitive so if I ask her not to buy me those things it will hurt her feelings and ruin her holiday. So I do the polite "thank you, it's lovely" and donate it.
