Today is a tough day. I got roughly 3.5 hours of sleep last night. The new student employee starts today. I tell the staff I'm leaving tomorrow morning. I got my separation paperwork from HR today.
I spent much of this weekend curled up in PJs, on my computer and watching football games because I didn't have the emotional energy to do anything else. It was much easier for me to deal with the layoff because that was overall big picture and was not about me. I even recommended my position be eliminated. In this case, while I know there are political reasons,unrealistic they were), and that is difficult for me. I hope that some day I will look back at this time as simply a 6 month interlude between career steps. But right now, I am in the middle of it, and it's difficult. (I just got a call from our finance department about rent my department should have been paying and hasn't, and they're going to forward me the information- which I can't do anything about. She also wanted to "double check" that I would not be involved in budget projections, since administrators usually are. I can't say no because I'm leaving the position, because my staff doesn't know that yet and I don't have an office. So I just have to say "no" and pretend it's because I can't do it, or something.)
That said, I'm going to post essentially another brag. I need these ego boosts. They are what keep me going and prevent me from feeling like a total failure.
I had a phone interview today at noon. It was for a position I suspected would be a little too much of a step down for me, but with a company known for their work in Lean, and for their responsible corporate governance/citizenship. It would also break me out of healthcare, as it's a heavy equipment manufacturing company, and really let me use my operations certification. (This is a company at which the HR person recognized and respected that certification and the organization that issued it. In healthcare, most people have never heard of APICS.) And, the HR person interviewing me has a PhD, so I considered it somewhat possible that the position might be a fit for me, but found it unlikely. And I was right. It is an assistant lean workshop leader position, and they are looking to pay someone half to a little more than half of what I am looking to make. So it is a no go. Even if I had told the HR lady that I was willing to step down that much, I don't think she would have accepted it. In her mind, I could step down 5-10k for changing industries, but certainly not more than that. But (and here's the brag part), she told me their senior lean workshop leaders do make what I am looking to make, and that she has one specifically on the business ops side (as opposed to the manufacturing side) that is on hold for the holidays, but will open back up. She thinks I have the near perfect background for that one. I said I was interested, and so she transferred my resume and her note from the interview over to that position right now, so that I am on the candidate list when it re-opens. She also decided she was going to send my resume to the director in charge of Lean workshops (and the hiring manager for the position we talked about today) with a note that this current position wouldn't work, but that she thinks I am a great candidate and this way he can consider me for positions that he might know will be coming up but aren't open yet. She also asked if I would be open to relocation. I did have to say that I am not, but it was nice to know that she was thinking of possibilities for me nationally, not just in my local area.
So, as far as failed interviews go, that was a winner, and a nice way to spend my lunch.
The interview for the position where they called me and asked me to apply is scheduled for lunch time on Thursday. That one posts its salary range, so I know it is acceptable to me. It does say 75% travel, though, and I need to figure out what their definition of travel is. If it's day trips around the region, I am good. If it is 7 out of every 10 working nights I am in a hotel room, it is not good. (That would cause C to divorce me, not a quality I am looking for in my next job.)
On a note about Social Security cards: You cannot get a new social security card via mail. They pretend you can on the website, but if you read what you have to send in, you quickly realize that it's not possible. You have to be able to provide not just notarized copies of materials, but certified copies. This includes ID- you can't get certified copies of your drivers' license or your passport, and what good would that do anyway, as a picture via the mail doesn't let them actually verify your ID. Anyway, because of this, I went to a local social security office on Friday. I was there for 2 full hours. But I got a replacement social security card for me ordered as well as one for Pop Tart (since we actually don't have that on any of our paperwork). It was a long and boring 2 hours, but at least it was semi-productive.

I told my staff today. It was very hard. These are a wonderful group of women and I am sad I won't be working with them anymore. They want to take me out to lunch.
Told my Lean Coffee group this morning, too. They were all very helpful and made some suggestions about positions I should apply for.
At least it's out there and I can talk about it openly now.

You will. The job before this one was a real mind fuck. I recognize now a lot of it was outside my control. I think of it as my foot in the door. I never would have gotten my current job as an external candidate.
It was also a learning experience. I learned a lot about politics and what I DON'T want in a boss/employer. I also learned about what kind of job is best for me. That's helped with planning where I want to go next.

Thanks everyone.
One of my staff called in sick today. I sat and talked with another some this morning, encouraging her to stick it out with this project. She has some pretty ambitious career goals and remaining on this project will give her project opportunities that she would not get elsewhere and also has more department directors and administrators knowing her name.
I applied for the job recommended to me by my Lean Coffee group yesterday and was contacted. I will be having a phone interview for that position early next week. (I knew they were planning on doing the first round of screenings on Friday and early next week, so the quick reply is more a testament to their already set timetable than my resume/strength as a candidate.) The group had also asked me to send them my resume, so I did. I just spoke to one of them. She was asking permission to send my resume out to one of the groups she is part of, saying that while she has not worked with me, she has been impressed with my knowledge and people skills, and do any of them know of opportunities either in or out of the university. If so, would they please contact me.
Despite the fact that most people do get jobs based on who they know/networking, I never have. I think there's a very good chance that it could be very different this next time around. (Unless I get a job with the company I do a phone interview with tomorrow. I don't have a network there.)
I am working on putting together a look at our finances during my unemployment, and I will hopefully get that up on my blog today.

FWIW, I haven't gotten any of my jobs through networking as I've moved each time away. My current and prior employers were based in different locations from where I was living at the time, but was moving there in the near future.

So, a quick look at finances- after unemployment and non-paycheck income, our gap each month should be about $800- without cutting anything from our budget except what would go into savings each month. We have over $25k in savings. I'm thinking that as long as I'm only out of work as long as I was last time (2 months), this isn't going to be more than a hiccup in our financial plans.

Quick update on the phone interview today- it's a no go, my choice. The travel really is fly out Sunday or Monday morning, don't get back home until Thursday evening, spend Friday in your office. 3-4 nights out of the house at this point in time would lead to a divorce, and no job is worth my marriage (or losing that time with Pop Tart).
Looks like the interview for the other on campus job I thought would be next week will be tomorrow afternoon. Need to let C know that I need to do the IEP meeting for Pop Tart and he needs to take the doctor's appt so that I can do the interview.

Actual last day on the job today. I'll leave here about noon to get to Pop Tart's IEP meeting. Then I have a phone interview (for another position at the university) at 3:30pm.
I am looking forward to having some quiet time at home next week.
My staff have given me the two biggest compliments ever. On Tuesday, when we were discussing my leaving, one of them said "We could tell them we'll all quit unless they bring you back" and yesterday another said "I hope you get another job here at the university and then we can all come work for you there"
There's lots to take away from what happened here. Some of it is failure on my part- the management oversight team lost confidence in me, that's my failure, but some of it is also confirmation of other skills. I thought I was a good boss before, but only had had one direct report (whose previous boss had been a nightmare, though the direct report wasn't a picnic either). Now, I am at least certain of my team leadership skills.
