It really isn't either/or. None of those are on my road although there are some very annoying geese that walk through my yard on the way to the pond. Oh, and there are some mean, mean deer who keep mixing up my vegetable garden with a salad bar. Sure, there's a toilet propped up on the back of their house. But they don't care that we have a flagpole in the middle of our front yard, which is not allowed by most of the HOAs in our area. Neither of us are harming each other or really each other's property values. I guess I'm the only one that doesn't want to live near a house with a toilet in their yard. I'm not thrilled about it, but there is a lot of distance between me and the toilet. And it isn't "in their yard." It is propped up against the back of their house. Maybe they have a project for it? Maybe it was too heavy for them to move any further. Maybe lots of stuff. If I told them it bothered me, they would probably do something about it. It doesn't bother me that badly. It's a different life in the country. My point is that we aren't meth labs or commando camps. We are just people who live and let live. I still remember living in a home where the neighbors' deck backed up to my bedroom window. We are talking about a less than a foot between them. I'll take the toilet a long way across the road any time. I doubt if any of us really notice it any more.

Burning a man?? That must be a typo! I was thinking the same thing. You've never heard of Burning Man? From Wiki: Burning Man is a week-long annual event held in the Black Rock Desert in northern Nevada, in the United States. The event begins on the last Monday in August, and ends on the first Monday in September, which coincides with the American Labor Day holiday. It takes its name from the ritual burning of a large wooden effigy, which is set alight on Saturday evening. The event is described as an experiment in community, art, radical self-expression, and radical self-reliance.[1][2][3][4] Burning Man is organized by Black Rock City, LLC. In 2010, 51,515 people attended Burning Man.[5] 2011 attendance was capped at 50,000 participants and the event sold out on July 24.[6]
One of the roots of the annual event now known as Burning Man began as a bonfire ritual on the summer solstice in 1986 when Larry Harvey, Jerry James, and a few friends met on Baker Beach in San Francisco[7] and burned a 9-foot (2.7-meter) wooden man as well as a smaller wooden dog. Harvey has described his inspiration for burning these effigies as a spontaneous act of "radical self-expression".[8] The event did have earlier roots, though. Sculptor Mary Grauberger, a friend of Harvey's girlfriend Janet Lohr, held solstice bonfire gatherings on Baker Beach for several years prior to 1986, some of which Harvey attended. When Grauberger stopped organizing it, Harvey "picked up the torch and ran with it,"[8] so to speak. He and Jerry James built an 8-foot (2.4-meter) wooden effigy for 1986, which was much smaller and more crudely made than the neon-lit figure featured in the current ritual. In 1987, the effigy grew to almost 15 feet (4.6 meters) tall, and by 1988, it had grown to around 40 feet (12 meters). Burning Man attendees informally called it "The Man," and this name was given to each successive effigy, every year since Burning Man began.

There was a bit more room between the houses where I grew up, but the neighbor's kitchen window was right across from ours and my Mom and their Mom would talk to each other over the driveway while they did dishes. And the neighbor Mom was into EVERYONE'S business. I wanted a little more privacy when I grew up. I have farms around my little neighborhood but I wouldn't classify it as the Sticks. Now the next town over, maybe...

We have someone who put a freakin tacky bird feeder in his front yard. The kind that looks like you bought it at some tourist trap. 5 minutes later after a few comments as people drove by he removed it to his backyard. Thank GOD for that. Not even a nice bird feeder even. Another likes to put up a huge J E S U S in his front yard. No clue that no one else does and that others find it tacky. It's just for a little while though. I keep saying I'm going to get a huge inflatable something or other and out it in the front yard! Just to keep up with the joneses! So our HOA is not heavy handed at all but I'm glad that bird feeder is gone. I'd freak if I lived next to someone who put Virgin Mary in their front yard or one of those godawful colored "gazing" bowls. Put that crap in your backyard. But then again, I'd be removing it at night and tossing it until they got the clue that it wasn't cool.

Encourages your neighbor to keep his "bathtub Jesus" in the back yard. That's why DW keeps the plastic pink flamingos in the back yard, tucked in the corner behind the Juniper, only visible from the office window. If the neighbors knew we have plastic pink flamingos, in addition to the smoker, they'd know that we're just a couple of rednecks at heart.

But if you want to put the pink flamingo or the birdfeeder in your front yard, is it so very awful?

We are on a corner lot, so not much privacy in our yard. My neighbors can complain about garden decorations all they want but in the end it is my property. So, as long as I am not breaking the law, I am going to put whatever I damn well please in my yard and they will have to deal with it.

Actually, it is awful but those that wish to live that way don't move into HOAs, simple as that. I have no issue with tacky, just keep it to yourself or those who get into it. From living in Florida, I realized those that had no class also had money to live in nicer areas. Where I was from beforehand, those that had no class lived where it didn't matter. No, I don't want to live in a million dollar home next to the Beverly hillbillies. Not that I live in one now btw. But this is a desirable neighborhood and location. One bad apple can ruin it for all. I can live with Jesus in the front yard, the letters anyway, but the tacky bird feeder from n. Carolina or Georgia or wherever, permanently. Good grief, no! Glad someone told him but why would he even think to begin with that it'd be okay? Look around, dude, it doesn't fly here and never will. The idea that there needs to be HOAs because someone has no class is what started them, I'm sure. Move to where it doesn't matter if that's how you want to live but don't bring that behavior into nice neighborhoods.

We don't have one and I guess I should be thanking my lucky stars to have the wonderful neighbors that I do.

Absolutely. I think by reading some of the lists that not all are as lucky. We have great neighbors on either side of us now but the one was never here so the only things ever done to their outside was what the association did, so it never looked bad but it ever looked good, either. Now I live next to a master gardener and I'm the sloth!

But if you want to put the pink flamingo or the birdfeeder in your front yard, is it so very awful? It isn't so awful until your aestetics impared neighbor decides that his junk pickup would make a good planter, to go with his abandon toilet planter. If he's a mile down the road, it's no big deal. If he's 40 feet away and I'm trying to sell my million dollar house in an otherwise upscale community, it's pretty awful. Not too many people spending big bucks on a house are willing to buy next to a junk yard (or next to Jase Robertson, who has been known to hang deer from a limb of one of the trees in his front yard to gut them).

I am just not a fan of groupthink. But if that floats your boat, go for it.

Wonder why people with million dollar houses always think they are the only ones with good taste

They aren't by any means just ask hulk hogans neighbors. A HOA would have prevented their damn chickens and other assorted irritants as well as their fugly mansion.
