LOL, I love when you think I'm the one who doesn't understand English...
So tell me why the first 10 are already afraid to call 911? Or not, because I really don't care any more.

How can you have spent the last four years on this board and are just now hearing about the ACA, from a customer at your convenience store no less... crazy.

There's a religious exemption by the way, so you can skip insurance and the tax penalty if you decline based on religious grounds. Just tell the IRS you're Amish. Problem solved. So, how's business?

If you make no income on your business after 3 years, why do you keep running it? I thought you had some sort of IT job that was chasing you to work for them a while back. At this point if you can't turn a profit I would think it better to work for someone else and actually get some money for it.

Not sure whether PA has it's own or goes through the fed? The Fed is healthcare.gov. You'll need your W2 to know how much you earned last year to find out how much it will cost you. Why no one is freaking out? Because you all are having JOBS where your 'other me' is paying for you? Or you also like golf? Yes and yes. FORE!

OK, nothing like a tea-on-the-monitor thread first thing in the morning! Loony, on a recent thread, you said you were making enough money to cover all your bills. Medical insurance is a bill, whether you have coverage from an employer or not. I have coverage at work, but I also have a Health Savings Plan that I put money into, to cover things my insurance does not. You have a child in college, living at home. How is your daughter covered for health care?

Will gov pay my insurance just because my P$L even? Just please, tell me what you guys are doing if you are like me small business owners with no FT employees unable to afford insurance? I am so surprised I HAVE to have an insurance by Jan,1st 2014. Who sighned THAT law? You can't POSSIBLY be serious! You CAN'T be! People in other countries are aware of it.

At this point if you can't turn a profit I would think it better to work for someone else and actually get some money for it. Why do you think I want to do this now, working for someone else? My DH won't let me. He is afraid of being left alone with it (actually just don't want to do it himself, its more fun with me)... Secondly...I have told you already I am feeding tons of people plus me, so I do not have money to throw but I am ok. And hoping to be better. And yes, my DD has CHIP coverage wich is great, we have none. BTW 'none' is not name of the insurance company (for you, Rocky )

If you qualify for CHIP, then you should get insurance for nothing or practically nothing between the medicaid expansion & subsidies available.
You can probably stop freaking out now.

I think it is time to shut your...keyboard and go take some aspirin...with alcohol. Its fine to do it in the morning. You allowed. go...go now... And for the rest of you - if I wanted to be on wealfare I probably wouldn't open the store. I would probably be comfortable and relaxed and freaking out about $36 foodstamp cut (though I hear it is only $10 pp). And btw I am having an interview on a radio (some WY***) about how foodstamp cut will affect businesses. In YOUR FACE!

I have a question, and this is a legitimate inquiry.
If you've been in business for several years now, and your business just barely breaks even while you both work 7 days a week, and you can't even afford things like health insurance, why do you stay at it? Seriously, I'd like to understand what motivates you to continue. Do you have a reasonable expectation that you will be able to work less and bring in a comfortable income in the near future? Is is just because it's part of that whole "American Dream" thing to own your own business? Do you enjoy being part of the community? Is it fulfilling in some way that isn't easily seen? Do you guys, like Dark, just hate working for other people so much that you'd do anything to avoid it?
I'm actually curious here, so perhaps someone else who's been in the same position can jump in.

If you think having an employer is some magical way to get free insurance, you are wrong. My insurance costs about $400 per month for me out of pocket. I think having insurance is important so I put that amount inthe budget. If you can't make a reasonable living and cover the basics, then maybe yoy need to rethink your choices.

Things are going to be VERY different now, now that he and his band of Marxists have run the land for a while. First of all, Ve vill now haf svimvear. Und Dayvear. And they will all look alike; the same dull, featureless gray, baggy, burlap bags. We can wear them in our collective farms as we toil in the fields, singing tribute to the magnificant Proletariat. Except for those of us who are educated. We will be shipped off to "re-education camps" for Behavior Modification. Behold, our Brave New World. I know it is going to be like talking to the...rock...but I will pretend that I think rocks have brains. Well...I had been working for huge corporations for years. So was my DH. When I had lost my job, DH was already unemployed for a year, looking for a job, getting funny offers like $10/hour, and he was getting over $500/week in UC benefits. WHY taking job that pays nearly third? Mommy didnt give birth to a fool you know... So when I lost job I was making same maximum $500/weekly and we started to think about future. IT jobs were cut everywhere! So there was no go for me. My store got abandoned by former dudes and friend called. DH used to have same kind of store a while ago so we said let's try. None of us thought it was going to be that hard. But it is. However we have built certain thing in here. Our store is beautiful, produce and groseries are greatest around, people are coming, we are feeling kind of important to some of them, we had built our own work for us, it is not a business yet but YES we are hopefull that in a little while we are going to be able to hire people here FT and manage store from home or whatever...no one knows. Competition closing his store after New Year, so we going to be getting more people. I am busy advertising, purchasing, selling, billing, I am so busy I have no time to think how is this going to end. I see so much perspective ahead of me... I am also proud to be able to support 4 families plus mine. I am not fully financially stable yet but who said I am not successfull? Rocky, do you really think that business that brings $200K PROFIT is not successfull? Another story is that I need $2 50K and I am working on it...by farming, wholesaling...etc. ...HOWEVER I would LOVE working for the company now and get paycheck weekly and have benefits like paid vacation and sick days. One think scaring me is what if I will be laid of again? Hubby is older now, no one going to hire him. So if I left and went out working I have to make sure I am leaving him for JOB - I will leave him with great established store and crew. I am sure Dark has 'Dark's' reason for having a business. But that was mine.

So, to make a long story short, you remain at the business because you feel that you have a reasonable expectation that you will be able to make a good living in the near future, your husband's job prospects are slim, and you feel some sense of fulfillment despite ongoing financial difficulties. That's what I was asking, thanks.
PS... please someone notice the $200k annual profit claim, please?

And that's before divvying up that $200k into such silly things as taxes, licensing, insurance, electric, sewer, water, rent/mortgage on the business property, city/state/federal fees, purchasing store stock, etc. But...but...it's $200k!!!! It's moneeeeeeeey!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You're gonna press on dopey stuff like margins, profit and loss, revenue and income? <<Nancy takes off her gloves and taps Rocky on the cheek>>. There's your silly slap for the day.

You're right, Nancy. Silly me for thinking that since Looney's family obviously brings in $200k after all their business expenses have been paid (what profit is), that she should be able to afford health insurance...

Rocky, do you really think that business that brings $200K PROFIT is not successfull? How can you be making $200K in profit & bringing home so little that you qualify for CHIP? What are you doing with all that profit? ETA - Profit is what you have after you pay all business expenses including salaries. I don't think you really mean you have $200K in profit or your store would be doing fantastic.

Just a few observations...
....:::: When I had lost my job, DH was already unemployed for a year, looking for a job, getting funny offers like $10/hour, and he was getting over $500/week in UC benefits. WHY taking job that pays nearly third? Mommy didnt give birth to a fool you know... ::::....
40 hours per week x $10 per hour = $400 per week. 400/500 = 80% No idea how to compare that to "nearly third", but 80% is greater than 2/3 FWIW. Also, the $400 wouldn't be subject to a time limit, so even when unemployment runs out, you'd still be getting the $400 and only working the 40 hours per week. If DH is as good as you say, surely he also would have worked his way up in the company, getting raises along the way. Doesn't sound too foolish to me.
...:::: DH used to have same kind of store a while ago so we said let's try. None of us thought it was going to be that hard. ::::....
I distinctly remember several of us telling you exactly that it was going to be this hard.
....:::: I am not fully financially stable yet but who said I am not successfull? Rocky, do you really think that business that brings $200K PROFIT is not successfull? ::::....
If you are really making $200k profit, you would be financially stable and successful. Your kids would not qualify for CHIP, your daughter would not be receiving any need based scholarship for college and you would be able to afford healthcare.
