I think parents try to make things better/easier on their kids and sometimes do them no favors by doing so. I am so guilty of that but DF is worse because he has the money.

Naturally, all good parents want the best for their children. It's just a question of what that means.

I had an academic scholarship for my first year of college, and I took it for granted. I partied my way through my first year and lost it. Idiot! Still kicking myself for that one. However, once I was going to school on my own dime I sure kicked my butt into high gear and focused and did manage to graduate in 5 years. I am so happy I went, although I'm not sure if it has helped me professionally. In my industry, and I would imagine with many others, it's not WHAT you know, it's WHO you know. I have been lucky to impress key people on my way. But, my education is something that nobody can ever take away from me, and I'm very proud of that.

I dropped out of college just over ten years ago, I had no money left and no desire to keep trying. I had a full-time job, health insurance, etc. I didn't see that it was necessary. I'm going back though, it was supposed to be summer, but I am going to wait until fall so that I can pay for it entirely in cash.
I went back for about 18 months a few years ago at a different school, and I enjoyed it much more because it was relevant to what I am doing, versus studying for a liberal arts degree that my parents/grandparents wanted.
What is driving this return to finish my bachelors is that even though I have been with my company for 11 years, and been promoted, I need options should I get laid off or want to leave.
