Getting back to the original subject, I cleaned out 4 pantry shelves today, and made a paper inventory list that hangs on the inside of the door. Now to do the cupboards. Next shopping trip, half of my funds will be spent on donations for the food pantry. Oh shizzle, this means I have more room now I keep an inventory list too. I keep it on my computer and update it when I make a huge purchase that increases my stockpiles and/or at least twice a year for every item.

I have tons of everything. Honestly don't know what I would have to run to the store for. Oh wait, I know, I know! Blue Bell Ice Cream, we can't seem to keep enough of that around. I may put 4 or 5 gallons in the basement freezer and not tell anyone. I have walnut trees and am debating if I want to pick up all those nuts and mess with them. Nasty, been running over them with the mower. The outer hulls need to come off then the nuts dried. Also pecans but think they are small ones. I'll come help! I've been craving them and they are wayyyyyyyy too expensive at the store!

The small pecans around me have always been the yummiest!!! They're also the biggest pain to crack/shell/clean.

I love how we share sale info here. What's the point in not sharing, so we all can benefit? Today's finds: 99 Cent store: 12 bars of Dove Original soap, 30 cans of Friskies Cat food in the can, 5 Cans of Del Monte Pasta sauce and 8 fresh red bell peppers to make Roasted Red Pepper and Garlic Cream Soup tonight to freeze. I should get at least 4 good size containers I almost forgot: 4 pounds Challenge Butter $1.99 a pound each at Grocery Outlet. Baking season starts in about 2 weeks

I was watching a program about living in the Alaska remote areas. The one lady had fresh carrots that were stored in the root cellar. She protected them by burying them in straw. Other root veggies were simply stored in cardboard boxes.

Patstab - of all the things you can store in your freezer (meat, veggies, fish, hash browns, fries, bread (even some fruits/pies, etc ) .... you're upset you don't have Bluebell Ice Cream?
Just buy a bucket or two of ice cream (any brand) and keep them in the freezer along with the important foods.

Patstab-I wrap green tomatoes in newspaper and store in a dark room. I have had fresh tomatoes at Thanksgiving. A friend who has been gardening for many years told me about this trick. He says tomatoes actually ripen at night in the dark. Who knew. It appears he might be right.

I thought ice cream WAS an important food! I think you may need to readjust your priorities.

This year was horrible, but I did notice tomatoes that were turning were red in the morning were ripe the next morning. Maybe -like us- they grow in the sleep stage.

Ok everyone, here's the recipe: 8 large red bell peppers, washed 1 large sweet onion, chopped 1 pinch of sugar 4 cloves minced fresh garlic 4 tablespoons of butter plus 2 tablespoons olive oil 6 cups chicken stock 1 cup cream or heavy cream, whatever you choose Salt and pepper to taste Dry the peppers off and place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment or foil ( helps with the clean up) and roast the peppers at 450F till they are soft, about 30 minutes to 45 minutes. Place the hot peppers in a large bowl and cover the bowl with plastic wrap till they are cool enough to handle. Remove the stems, skin and seeds and chop roughly. In a large stockpot, melt the butter and heat the olive oil to medium high heat. Add the onions and the pinch of sugar and cook the onions for 8 minutes, till they start to caramelize. Then add the garlic and peppers and cook for about 4 minutes. Start the seasoning with a bit of salt and pepper. Add the chicken stock, reduce the heat and simmer 25 minutes. Add the cream and simmer over low heat for another 20 minutes. This will concentrate the flavors. Remember not to boil it or cook over high heat as the cream may break. Cool the soup a bit and process in a blender, food processor or an immersion blender. Check the seasonings and adjust to your taste. It doesn't have to be perfectly smooth, but have fun Enjoy I almost forgot to add that you can leave the cream out, and this makes for a great red pepper sauce on pasta, not to mention you can add meats and veg to it and serve it on a bed of rice. Get creative

I also have a butternut squash soup that's as easy as the red pepper soup I just can't see myself living out of measuring cups and teaspoons when there are so many things you can do with bargains Like I said What's the point of doing all this if you can't enjoy yourself? Since I started "cherry picking" I'm having so much more fun planning for the Holidays, and it's working so well that It gave me an even more generous attitude. There's a way around paying high prices on almost anything.

I got the beef at the Farmers Market today from a local farm. We had ribeyes tonight to die for. First time since we left Indiana 30 years ago that we have had good meat. That stuff in Texas is sad, and the grocery locally is selling beef grown in the USA/AUST. Why would that be. What I got had been butchered Sept 30. I had those with things from the Farmers Market, along with fresh carrots, French fries, and home cooked green beans. Then I made apple pie, was really good. I am now stocked up with pork, beef, and chicken for quite a few months. I'm so glad to have it plus the good quality. My freezers are bulging. Dinner is at PATSTAB's house tomorrow!

Pat, it might just be the variety of pecan. Seedlings are always small no matter how much "fertilizer" you put down. Others will also vary in size due to the weather conditions each year. I have found that most seedlings have better flavor than a lot of the "popular" varieties.
If you are talking about BLACK walnuts, you are right! Most folks won't bother with the work involved with them...and I won't either any more. It wasn't so bad back when I was younger.
We stock pile simply so we can both take advantage of the best prices and so we don't have to run to town to the store! I HATE running out of anything!

Pat, around here there are places you can sell the pecans to, someone told me a year or so ago they were getting $11 a pound for theirs. I don't know if you have any of those type places nearby but couldn't hurt to find out if you don't want to deal with it.

Pecans are selling shelled in the stores for between $7-$10 lb. If you sell them to a wholesale outfit you get any where from $0.35 to around $1 per lb....I know, I've sold them many times and last year was the highest price anyone had been getting for several years...roughly $0.90 lb....in the shell. But when you pick up from several trees it doesn't take long to add up to some "nice" $$$$.

Anyway, even $.35 a pound is something and they won't go to waste.

I will just pick up enough pecans for us. Sure people around here would grab them for free if I shelled them, but they likely wouldn't want to pay much otherwise. Nuts are crazy high in the stores so we don't buy as many. I read the Chinese love some varieties and have bought the whole crops from various growers is why they are so high. Yes, my DH built a break room and work areas for a pecan company about 30 miles from us last year. They had several both Chinese & Japanese buyers come look at their inventory while he was working there. A Chinese firm bought the entire inventory. Last year, most places were paying $0.90 lb. until the week before Thanksgiving. After that the price went down to $0.45 lb. Most of these places will also crack or completely shell them for you if you want to pay for it. It generally costs $0.35 lb. to get them cracked. I've never inquired about the price for complete shelling since I will sit & pick them while I watch tv. I still have 3 gal. bags in the freezer from last year...opps, I forgot, make that 2...I'm in the process of chopping/grinding one now. I use my old fashioned "screw it down", hand operated meat grinder without any blades in it. It does great and I get some chunks as well as smaller stuff. Something else that is helping to drive up the price is there are places now making cooking oils from nuts. That same company gave me some sample bottles. It's ok but NOT worth $27 a qt....that was the price last year. It has a higher burn temp. than most other oils and is supposed to be as healthy or more so than olive oil.

I also discovered that it's not just food items I want to stockpile now. Some time ago, Paul accidentally tossed a couple of my boxes in the garage. They were soft cover Martha Stewart books like Holidays, Great American Wreaths, well, you get the picture. I poked through the garage, and no luck. I found copies of every book I had except for 2 on Amazon for less that $2.00 a piece, which of course I got, and ended up with super saver shipping. Now I have a stockpile of reference books I used to refer to all the time

In previous years, I've always gotten my Halloween candy for free using drug chain rewards, but I'm out of the drug chains these days so knew I would be paying OOP. Anyway, I got to stockpile bags of Nestle and Hershey snack sized bars @ $.80/bag cuz both DS and my mom had $5/$20s and 10% off candy in their J4U accounts at Safeway, and I had coupons. Now I have (22) bags of candy ready to go for Halloween. I hid it from DH.

Hey, pepperdoo, I got a Manager's Special today too!! (8) pkgs. thin cut pork chops @ $2.25/lb. instead of $4.49/lb. I've been craving these for over a week, but I refuse to pay $4.49/lb. Now, I'll have several packages in the freezer!!
