<<stomps foot and pouts>> I want a Grocery Outlet!!! I really wish you had one too, Iggy. Since the advent of Extreme Couponing on TLC, the deals at my national grocery chains have decreased to a trickle. I still get an occasional great deal at Safeway, but they are really few and far between these days and rarely can I really stockpile due to either limits on the deal or limits on coupons. The Grocery Outlet does not take manufacturers' coupons and does not set limits. As a matter of fact, if an item is being clearanced because it's nearing its sell-by date (meat, cheese, etc.) which are the very best deals that they offer, they prefer that you take all they have to make room for another item. I feel VERY, VERY lucky to have somewhere where I can stockpile food items, especially meat and cheese, so cheaply. My BFF in Nor Cal has one near her home and frequently tells me about the awesome deals. She sometimes it's different selections, but who cares when it comes to saving $$?

I have never in my life paid $5.49 for a jar of mayo, good grief. I need to stock up on that next time I'm in the city, surely its not that high. Mayo where I live is 5.49 in the grocery. They weren't selling much so they put it on sale @ 2/5.00. I now use it sparingly. I use to make it when the kids were home. I'll have to search out the recipe. I remember it was easy using eggs and oil with a bit of salt. I have seen some recipes lately with quite a few ingredients in them. I just would like plain mayo.

We can't make a difference in other's lives if we don't share information. We'd be foolish if we didn't. Shopping at Grocery Outlet has put a big thorn in the sides of the big chain stores here, and today's ads prove it. Albertsons actually has a sale on Tri Tip, and I will actually walk in there now. I'm "Cherry Picking" regularly now The problem in my area is that we don't have a lot of competition when it comes to national grocery chains. We have expensive (Safeway) and more expensive (Nob Hill), a Super WalMart, and ethnic markets....that's it!! The competition is so weak that the WalMart here will not price match Safeway because you need a loyalty card to get the Safeway sales prices. I save so much money at the GO and get high quality food there (i.e. filet, goat cheese, Canadian bacon), yet I get the impression that most people here think it is a poor person's store.

That is EXACTLY why I have stockpiles. The last time I bought mayo, I bought (6) 30 oz. jars of Heinz brand for $.99/jar.....at the GO, of course!! My fav brand is Best Foods (Hellman's on the east coast), but for $.99, Heinz is most excellent.

Paying $5.99 for a pound of Challenge Butter at Vons is just shameful, when GO is $1.99. A person I used to work with once said that she shops exclusively at Vons, and refuses to set foot in any other store because of the "atmosphere". This is the same individual who complained that her check didn't last more than 3 days after payday. I just don't understand it.

The homemade mayo is a good idea because you can use any oil you want to. I'd be willing to make some with olive oil, grapeseed oil, garlic oil, and since I already have it all in stock... I'm not quite sure about the raw egg thing. Once you've had food poisoning, it makes you think twice about stuff....

Guuess what'll keep me out of trouble tomorrow Plus it's FRESH, and you control the ingredients (no mystery chemicals), and it tastes better (no chemical preservatives) and making small batches yourself is cheaper (unless you get it on "fire sale" for 99 cents, but then you lose out on the other benefits of taste and purity). But to each her own

How can you make it and get around the raw egg thing? Well I have an answer that works for me, but I know not everyone would be comfortable with it. All the (legitimate) literature (and scaremongering too!) I've read out there says that salmonella is a fact of life in (filthy, crowded, inhumane) commercial egg production. I buy my eggs at my farmer's market from a local chicken keeper. I've personally met the birds producing the eggs, I've seen the feed and care they get and the (great!) conditions in which they live, so I don't worry about "commercial herd" contamination. And I only buy when I'm ready to use them - they don't sit in my frig for weeks on end. And the food I make with them doesn't sit around for days allowing bacteria to grow. YMMV If you want a few "egg-safe" mayo recipes, check this out: homecooking.about.com/od/howtocookwithcondiments/a/mayospoilage.htmETA: some folks put the egg in a bowl and set it over hot water on the stove (double boiler). They wisk the egg constantly until it temps between 110-120 but before it starts to coagulate/cook. They take it off the hot water and continue to wisk (so it doesn't clump) until it cools enough to proceed with the recipe. I've also heard of folks doing this heat-up technique in a Vitamix. Either way you have to REALLY babysit the process and catch it just at the right moment before it starts to scramble. You might think this is too much trouble. Again, to each her own.

I think there are a lot of people who feel that if they admit that they need or want to save money, it is a reflection of a lack of financial success. People don't think about the fact that all of that atmosphere is created in an effort to get them to spend more money on the same pound of butter or box of crackers or whatever that they can get much more cheaply elsewhere. Every week I check my Safeway Just 4 U personalized "deals" and most of the time I just shake my head and laugh. This week they offered me green seedless grapes for $1.98/lb. as if that is a great price. I won't pay a penny more than $1/lb. and several times this summer I got them for $.77/lb. When I get my grocery ads in the mail on Tuesdays, I am more anxious to see what produce will be offered at the ethnic markets than I am checking out the Safeway or Nob Hill ads.

dancinmama: I love my ethnic markets here. I took russet potatoes back to Albertsons because every one of them was black and rotting in the middle. That means they have been sitting for a VERY long time.
I buy most of my potatoes, garlic and onions at the Mexican market, not only because of the price, but because the stock moves very quickly. Potatoes are always snow white in the middle, and most are Idaho potatoes.
One thing I cannot stand is old onions and garlic. Once they sprout, they go all wrong. I would never feed that to anyone. The market always has new stock of both every week. Really nice people that work there too.

patstab: That's so wonderful. That's the only thing I miss about a house is having a garden. I'd be out there every day, and getting dinner from it every night. My new plants are doing very well, and soon enough I'll have fresh rosemary, thyme and oregano to use and/or dry for my spice cabinet. 3 little pots is so funny compared to your garden, but I'm doing what I can, lol. Next Spring I will have a few more. I got 2 roasts on sale for $20 and now my freezer is full. Next project is to stock up on rice, pasta and beans. Beans are not that much of an issue since the 99 cent store always has some for sale

JTLYK: I never stored the mayo. Small amounts were made for tuna or chicken salad. Things like that. Made, mixed and into the fridge or our bellies. So I don't know how long it lasts outside of that time frame.
Isn't regular mayo made with eggs? Plus lots of other 'things'.
And I'll put in the pot that food poisoning is not fun.

food poisoning is so NOT fun, I had a nasty bout in college after ordering the same chicken cutlet sub from the same sub shop 2 days in a row. my friends joked about morning sickness.....um, NO! so far beyond NOT even close to appropriate!
that said, I'm not a mayo fan. I buy the smallest jar available and still end up pitching half of it by the expiry date. I use it for turkey/tuna/heavily seasoned chicken salad, and even then with just enough mayo to hold it all together. how much mayo do y'all make in a "small" homemade batch? I'd love to join your ranks if a batch isn't insane.

I don't use mayo - it goes bad in the jar too quickly. (Oil rising to the top, etc.)
I use Kraft Miracle Whip - it tastes the same (in fact, I think it tastes much better than mayo. It has more "tang" to it. And it keeps a lot longer once the jar (or squeeze bottle) is opened and refrigerated.

I think I'll stick with the Best Foods or Hellman's. I refuse to end up sick like that again. I have never gotten sick from Best Foods or Hellman's. The smaller jar will do. I looked it up and no recipe I found makes less than 1 cup at a time. There are so many variations, too many to count. Have fun On a great note, GO had Special K cereal today for $2.49 a box. I got 2 cinnamon pecan, havarti cheese for $1.99 and Challenge butter for $1.99 for a pound. I'm set for the week

Tonight I added (6) 24 oz. jars of Mt. Olive Bread & Butters to my pickle stockpile. They were $.74/jar after J4U and $.75/1 hangtag coupon. The limit was (3), but my mom didn't want them so she told me to buy "3 for her". Sure beats the regular price of $3.29/jar.

I have never had mayonnaise go bad, ever. I did buy the 64 oz jar from Sam's. The 30 oz jar was the one that was $5.49, so I got 64 ozs for $7.78 I believe was the price. It's good till next March and I'm sure we will eat it before then. Just hate it takes up so much room in the fridge. I did that once - in the summer. Lots of salads for the family. I didn't have a problem either with spoilage. Matter of fact it was last summer. (2012) It didn't hang around that long for it to get spoiled. This year I haven't made any salads for summer. It did indeed take a lot of space in the fridge. Making it at home is good for me now. Since I don't leave it in the sun or store it on the counter (the fridge is made for such things) then I think I'll live. I can use the expiration date on the eggs and write it on the container.

Getting back to the original subject, I cleaned out 4 pantry shelves today, and made a paper inventory list that hangs on the inside of the door. Now to do the cupboards. Next shopping trip, half of my funds will be spent on donations for the food pantry. Oh shizzle, this means I have more room now

I saw a true story on TV yesterday about a family who heard a bad storm was coming, realized they didn't have much food in the house and decided to go to the store. While driving their SUV / truck home the road starts to flood. In a few seconds, the water changes from several inches deep to over 3 feet deep. The entire family, Mom, Dad and son ended up in the water and nearly DIED because thy didn't have a stockpile of food at home. They were rescued but their vehicle was swept away with all the groceries the just bought.
If they had kept plenty of canned goods, bread in the freezer, and some non-perishable milk, the whole ordeal would never have happened.
I'm glad I don't have to run out for food when a storm is coming. One year I had to hunt for batteries but now that is stocked up too.
