This makes the IRS my favorite government agency, at least for 15 minutes.
The SSA has gotta roll soon. The logistics of keeping track of who lived where when and when marriage was and was not recognized boggle the mind.

The Forbes article on the same subject makes it clear that this also applies to health insurance.
A whole lot of HR drones just breathed a huge sigh of relief.

I've seen links to slate and USA Today that say couples can go back as far as 2010 to amend federal returns as necessary. link

Yes! This is really wonderful news for so many people who have been disenfranchised, second-class citizens for far too long!

Well, they kind of had to, didn't they? It's not like it was their choice

I am a volunteer tax preparer, and I have already had two clients contact me. I will be s o happy to help them prepare amendments to their past returns.

Well, they kind of had to, didn't they? It's not like it was their choice I read snark into this too. Windsor was written in such a way as to seem as limited as possible. The IRS could have been obtuse and d-headed about this if they'd wanted to. Instead, they announced their decision well in advance of the typical health insurance enrollment periods. This is a blessing for folks who work for employers who would stumble (obtusely and d-headedly) over the question of whether belated IRS recognition was a qualifying event.

ETA: I am not a huge IRS fan, so don't see them as a big hero, I guess different flavor of snark than what I was reading, my apologies to you. my FB news feed has been full of stuff about this since the news broke, both the LGBT crowd and the Bible-thumpers. totally wasn't seeing an anti-IRS angle! sent from my electronic distraction

My guess is IRS is doing a pre-emptive thing, kind of reminding people, in case people want to amend their previous returns. It will create shit load of work for them.
I asked my friend if she is going to refile with her bimbo gf/now wife - she doesn't think it will be worth it, but others might decide to do it. Can you imagine the influx of those returns going in?

Great decision- I can't wait to hear what possible objections will surface. This just added some needed security to a lot of people that deserve it. That's freedom- you can marry who you love and live in any state- whether that state agrees with it or not- and at least for now your assets and estate planning wishes are safe. The rest of the federal agencies need to get on board- especially as said, SSA.

I am still waiting for one good reason to deny benefits other than it goes against the grain of a particular religious belief.

I was heading for bed (storming like crazy outside) and thought I heard mother up, so I went to check on her. Had to tell her all about it! If she could have danced for joy, she would have!

I am still waiting for one good reason to deny benefits other than it goes against the grain of a particular religious belief. Why does everything have to be antagonistic with you? Why do you go looking for trouble before (if it even) comes?

Until the the number of legally married gay couples reaches statistical relevance, I won't be feigning indifference.
