Then The Blaze took that interpretation and quoted it as if it were what the DoD had said, leaving out the fact that it was a Beck interpretation.

It's not his view- it is what it is: “Extremist Ideologies” the document states, “In U.S. history, there are many examples of extremist ideologies and movements. The colonists who sought to free themselves from British rule and the Confederate states who sought to secede (free themselves from Union rule) from the Northern states are just two examples..."

And they are excellent historical examples of extreme ideologies. Individuals who were committed to freeing the colonies or seceding from the United States certainly would have been poor candidates for joining the Redcoats or the Union Army. Those who currently advocate armed overthrow of the existing political order and/or secession of states are poor candidates for joining the US military.
