President Barry "57, I think 58 States" Obama Strikes Again

When President Barack Obama goes without his trusty teleprompter, he’s liable to say anything, as he did Tuesday night when he placed Charleston, Savannah and Jacksonville in the Gulf of Mexico.

He appeared on NBC’s The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, and the two eventually got around to discussing the economy.

In answer to Leno’s question about maintaining and upgrading the national infrastructure, the president noted at the video’s 3:00 minute mark that the Panama Canal “is being widened, so that these big supertankers can come in.”

He then outlined what needed to be done in the seaports along the Gulf. One can only assume he meant the Gulf of Mexico.

“If we don’t deepen our ports all along the gulf — places like Charleston, South Carolina or Savannah, Georgia, or Jacksonville Florida — those ships are going to go someplace else.”

For those of you that went to government run schools- all of South Carolina and Georgia, and the city of Jacksonville, Florida are NOT on the Gulf of Mexico.

I don't think it has anything to do with his schooling. W and Palin have said stupid geography stuff too. I think some people when they are tired or forget things keep talking instead of stopping or deciding to be vague for safety reasons.




On the other hand he could mean some special gulf. One never knows.

 THAT would be the *important* point.
 But if you choose instead to focus upon his (mis)use of the term "gulf" instead of "coast"... that's your bias showing, all over again (and again).

He's probably spent days staring at electoral maps, planning campaign trips, visiting various functions and installations all over the US. He's an intelligent and highly-educated man. What (besides your obvious personal dislike of the man) would lead you to believe this was anything other than a casual mistake?

I don't think that statement is true for either of them. Obama had a more unconventional life than most, but nothing I've read suggests any more molding than average. The movies
I've seen on W paint a picture of a guy who rebelled against family and was a party animal.
Yes the family and Cheney tried to guide him, but it seems he wasn't all that willing to be guided.

The thing they both share is a talent for politics. I don't think you can be guided into an excellence in understanding and navigating politics. I think what an individual has can be improved by others, but IMO its like creating a Michael Jordan or Tiger Woods. You can't just start with anybody.

I'm not sure what a person hand held and led through life is actually like, but I'm fairly sure it isn't a current or former President. I think it would be much closer to the woman who says she's too pretty to work(and her parents support her financially) and the guy who has never worked at age 30 or whatever it was(and is supported financially and living at home with his parents.)

i think Obama is way more independent than Bush ever was, and that the latter was way worse for the country.  but what we think matters very little.  historians will sort it out.  they already put Bush in the bottom quintile.  he is unlikely to rise above it, imo.

ps- they are both bright.  way way above average.

Agreed.  I no longer make the distinction between Democrat and Republican.  There are progressives, and there are Constitutionalists.  There are those in the political class, and those in the country class.

Well actually, putting the two words (and in) parenthesis means that he did NOT say that, but that the writer is trying to ascertain the speakers actual meaning. It is done all the time. Seeing that, I would think that he President actually said "along the Gulf, places like Charleston..."

It's done exclusively when the words are required to honour syntactical rules of the English language.

For example, if a person states, "I saw him point it at kid, shoot," it would be appropriate for the transcript to read "I saw him point it at (the) kid (and) shoot."

In this case, Pres. Obama's statement is syntactically sound, and the insertion changes the meaning significantly. It is definitely not a legitimate use of a parenthetical statement.

That said, I reiterate that it's one fudge by one reporter.

I will say, if the only two gaffes you can come up with in more than 6 years of continuous media coverage are this and the 57 states comment, he is doing really well with that.  I've probably made more gaffes than that since yesterday!

when the problem could be fixed by one simple word like "and" or "no", i think it is probably safer to assume that he made a casual mistake than he is dumber than me.

You've got to admit he didn't know how many states there are.  He actually did say 57, or 58.  Even when we're tired we know there are 50.

Frankly, I think it's dumber to assume he doesn't know where those cities/ports are; just as I think it's pretty dumb to spend your time trying to find something this unimportant to crow about.  I feel the same way about his "57 states comment".  It was an error.  Why he made the error, I don't have a clue, but I accept it was an error without having to call someone else dumb, or stupid.  I don't need that to stoke my own ego, thanks.

I don't know why anyone would start a thread about a misspoken couple of words when the biggest, laugh-out-loud pronouncement on these boards was a thread with a title of something like "Mittmentum Is On!" with an opening posted stating "Don't doubt me. Ever.", and ending with a thread title changed to "Í Wás Wrong. No Mittmentum. Obama Re-elected."  In between the 48 pages were 23 other threat title changes (by the thread author) all triumphantly pointing to a Romney win.

Nothing Obama has ever misspoken can even compare to that thread.

no, what he said was 50.......................................7.  there was a pause.  he pretty clearly thought he had said 40.  to most people.

seriously- you don't think a US senator knows how many states there are?  that is pretty insane, if you ask me.
