It's nice to know that all of the other problems we had in America have been solved and now we can concentrate on Paula Deen. Maybe Congress can fit in some hearings on her between sessions on pro athletes taking steroids.....

We haven't solved the problem of Kanye and Kim naming their baby a totally stupid, unacceptable name.

"Expectation" being a cannily-disguised synonym for "prejudice".

"Expectation" being a cannily-disguised synonym for "prejudice". Well, I am prejudiced against Al Sharpton in the strict sense of the word. I have a strong bias against people with a reputation for inciting racial hatred in general, but I have a special contempt for Al Sharpton whose actions in the Tawana Brawley affair were, in my opinion, criminal; and who tried the same in the George Zimmerman case. Maybe he's having a moment of conscience thinking about things HE has regretted saying?

Frankly, I find this whole thing a waste of time on all sides, unless there is absolute proof of present-day discrimination. This is the kind of thing that drives me to avoid television and most main-line news. I check the weather and local news on NBC's site because they have the best in my area. Other than that, I'll skim the headlines for what's happening "out there" and go looking for something unbiased about anything that seems relevant. Often, nothing seems relevant.

K Mart still had her items on the shelf. Didn't even know K Mart was still in business till the other day. I don't care about her one way or another, but I doubt that is the only time she said it, to casual at the remark. I have no doubt she said it repeatedly and regularly at one point in her life. My grandma regularly referred to black people as the n-word. She said right to one of my school friend's face, "You n***ers don't know sh**" when he said something silly that most any kid would say. I didn't think that much of it at the time, and frankly- neither did he. But let's talk about the "n" word, shall we? We have Jay Z's new album out and I was at Walmart (my favorite capitalist institution) and *I* was offended because they carry his new album and they were playing one of the songs UNEDITED and it was "N" word this and b*tch that-- and I'm supposed to shop there with my kids?

And it's not just Walmart- apparently Samsung finds the "n" word quite marketable: abcnews.go.com/Technology/samsung-buys-million-copies-jay-zs-magna-carta/story?id=19429103#.Ud1wcPlOOSoTom Ford, a fashion designer mentioned repeatedly by Jay Z in a song entitled "Tom Ford" isn't distancing himself from the N-word littered album, either. Beyonce doesn't seem to mind, either. It's worth noting that the Obama's are friends with Jay Z and Beyonce. I find the word offensive, but I'm not going to say not to use it. I just think the n-word police need to get off their high horse. It's either offensive ALL the time, and NOBODY ought to use it- or you find it acceptable.

Were they playing it over the loudspeaker, or was it on one of those kiosk where you push a button and it plays a snippet of a song? I'd just stop my kids from pushing any buttons.

Women call each other "bitches" as a term of endearance. But men can't call a woman a bitch without a little backlash. I know the rules are confusing, but you are a smart guy, so you can work within the boundaries.
Just like my husband can call me "hon" but I hate it when strangers call me "hon." It is the way the world works. It doesn't have to make sense.

It's a classless word, used by people with no class. It isn't acceptable anywhere. Maybe people used it unthinkingly in the past, but even my grandmother knew enough to use the term "colored people" because nice people didn't use that word. Using that word says more about you than it does whomever you're directing it to.

Um, no- it was being broadcast from the overhead speakers. Granted, I do not believe it was store-wide, though I don't know. It was definitely being played in the music / electronics / video game section.

It greatly helped that later in life she got re-acquainted with her Christian faith and could no longer reconcile her vile speech with her faith in God the Creator of us all.

Walmart is the official shopping destination of hoodlums, white trash, and lower class suburban gangster wannabes, of course they'd be playing that shit in the store. If you don't want your kids to listen to it don't shop there.

I'm old and have enough money to live out my life.

I shop there to stay in touch with the little people. And to piss off certain people here.

Shopping at Walmart is an offensive act in and of itself. LOL - I pretty much tend to agree with you Arch. I will ONLY go there if I'm looking at buying a small name-brand appliance (like a coffee maker, hand-mixer, etc. Or a set of "every-day" dishes/china or cook/bakeware, printer ink/paper, etc. (Again, name-brand only). Their price is sometimes marginally lower than at a more high-end store for those items. Other than those things (which are RARELY needed to be purchased, unless one breaks or breaks down/runs out), I never go there. Their other products/clothing are cheap imported crap. And I won't even look in their "grocery" section. I use the term loosely - there's not much there that looks fresh OR edible - even their packaged 'groceries' (cereal, cookies, etc)are questionable and usually stale. I learned after trying their "food" once, never to buy groceries there - ever.

Makes sense. See, I'm not successful enough to feel out of touch with the little people yet, I'm happy to make just enough to try and avoid them whenever possible. Like the people who can't afford first class but won't fly coach either. You're more like the guy who's so used to flying first class by now, that you occasionally dress down and fly coach just for the people watching.
