Paula has destroyed an empire she built up for years with her big mouth. She could not perjure herself on the witness stand. All this came down to one sentence: Yes, of course.

The Paula Deen dynasty collapse prompted me to start this thread. Her under oath reply of, "Yes, Of course." to the question have you ever used the "n" word in the past, was the start.
What one sentence reply have you seen destroy all that was built up?
Deen has the money to buy a "spin doctor" to restore her reputation. Most peeps are not that lucky.

Well, she shot off her mouth but everyone says stupid things in their life. They certainly have the right to fire her. But, i don't think she is necessarily a bad person either.

But, what good are apologies anymore anyway? Nobody ever accepts an apology. When someone does apologize it is always "too little too late" so why even do it?

I kept hearing about this, but I thought she used the word recently. I was surprised to find out that she was questioned under oath about ever using the word and said: Read more at: news.yahoo.com/food-network-wont-renew-paula-deens-contract-204745716.htmlI'm not sure what she considers to be "a very long time" ago, but I'm also not sure the attacks should be as much as they are if that is actually the case either. Saying the word "a very long time" ago doesn't make a person a racist now.

It's a shame to not have her contract renewed for such a minor reason......But these days everyone's afraid of pissing off the blacks

The remarks were made in the early 80s to her husband. She said she didn't make the ones from last year. I read it before everyone grabbed the band wagon to crucify her.

She's not the first star they've non-renewed over language they didn't approve of. Anthony Bourdain from No Reservations is no longer on the Travel Channel for that same reason.

"Deen also acknowledges she briefly considered hiring all black waiters for her brother's 2007 wedding, an idea inspired by the staff at a restaurant she had visited with her husband. She insisted she quickly dismissed the idea."
I did see a clip of her talking about the attire of these people or others she was hiring for an event.
My bad. I need to keep better notes.

The woman grew up in the South during the 60's. Does anyone think that it would have been unusual for people in that time and place to have used the N-word at one time? Is this over something said in private in the 80's? If so, it's ridiculous. I'm sure that many of us had different views of the world decades ago....
"Yes, of course," Deen said, though she added, "It's been a very long time."
I give her credit for telling the truth. In retrospect, I'm sure the words "I don't recall" will be the first ones that come to mind if she's ever asked anything else other than her name...

Personally I do watch the Food Channel all the time, but I've never been a fan of Paula Deen. I hope though that she can rise above this.

I never liked or disliked her, but I think it's ludicrous that she might loose everything over a word she used.
But then again, I think the idea of "hate speech" is just as absurd. Not to mention that it changes faster than some people change their underwear.
I've yet to figure out how this country can be so "freedom of speech" and so "you can't say anything to offend anyone's feeling" at the same time.

You're free to say what ever you wish though you could get sued or even get a punch in the mouth.

I don't think Paula Deen should be crucified over something she said in anger in a private conversation with her husband 30 years ago. We've all said some things we probably shouldn't have. If she's still running around throwing that word around, discriminating against her black employees or refusing to employ black people, then yes, let loose on her.
I also think people can change. In my early 20's I worked with a white man in his 60's who told me how he was raised to believe certain things about black people and his family referred to them with racial slurs. He said that as he got older he learned better. He was always respectful and kind to me and we worked well together. He gave me no reason to believe he hadn't grown beyond what he'd been taught and believed when he was young. So, either he was one crafty dude or people really can realize the errors of their ways and change.

I didn't see the clip but I read about the suggested attire which seemed pretty tacky. I disagree with what she said but give her kudos for admitting it. I disagree that her empire was solely destroyed by her big mouth. It is being hurt by the fact she said not good things in a more private setting and she is being sued over it. There are some personalities, Rush and Howard Stern come to mind, that say things just as bad but rarely pay for it very long. I hope she uses this experience to shed her racist roots.

Fan disapproval of Deen may be continued blow back for her not stepping forward years ago and announcing she had diabetes while she continued to push foods high in fats. I personally don't believe Deen needed to tell her fans she had diabetes but she could have offered healthier food recipes for those who do have diabetes.

Well, she had diabetes, so what? There are lots of chefs pushing rich foods. Just because she makes something rich and bad for you doesn't mean she is advocating everyone eat that 24/7.

I think she will still be able to make some shows and syndicate them for another network. She does have a big following.

She has some unfans because she didn't change her cooking which may have contributed to her diabetes while simultaneously hawking her diabetes medication for the manufacturer.

I think the media is blowing this out of proportion. I'm sure all of us have said something at one time or another that we would be embarrassed by if it came out in public. And, slang does change over time. (When I was a child, if you referred to someone as "gay", it meant they were a happy person. And, your lover was your boyfriend, not necessarily someone you were having sex with.)
I caught the stories on the news, but haven't read the articles (yet). If she isn't treating others with disrespect now, I think we should withhold judgment, unless someone catches her right now using politically incorrect terms to describe people.
**O.k., I just read the 2nd article. She could've used better judgment at that 2012 event.

Bills, I care because it is a current event that is easy to get up to speed on and not that serious. More interesting to me than Kim and Kanye drama but less interesting than the floods in Western Canada IMO.
