Quoting isn't working for me right now, but Thyme - NO WAY are 80% of babies born before their due date. 40 weeks (aka, the due date) is the average length of pregnancy, about half are born before, half after.
And the average length of a FIRST pregnancy is 41 weeks.

my OB/GYN told me that 40 weeks is the optimal duration of human gestation. That's not the same as saying it's the average. And I'm glad DS ran out of room at 39w and a few days because if I had to haul his tall ass around for more than 40 weeks I'd get him out of there myself!

I'm in a friend's wedding this November...so far it's cost about $150 for the dress, but I'm going to have to buy another since the wedding is less than a week before my due date. (The wedding was originally scheduled for October but the bride is due that month ) Still have to buy shoes and a gift. Not sure what we're doing about the bachelorette party at this point... DH gets off cheaper, he's been in five or six weddings and usually just has to buy a shirt in whatever color - none of his friends have done tuxes, and only one did an actual bachelor party. That plus gift is usually around $100. You're not going to the wedding...............

Most of the cost of the 1st wedding I would have regardless of being in the wedding party - it's plane tickets and hotel, I would still be going, and probably attending the bachelorette as she is my best friend. So, maybe $300-400 cheaper, but not substantially.
The second would definitely be cheaper if I wasn't in the wedding party. We might spring for 1 night at a downtown hotel, and I would probably attend the bachelorette and bring a gift but that would be it.

I have only stood up in one wedding, but I was supposed to be in another one (my sister's). DD had other plans and I went into labor the day before (ETA she was born at 36 1/2 weeks). It is really easy to remember when their wedding anniversary is! I heard that the guy that I was supposed to stand up with found a cardboard cutout somewhere and walked in with "her" when the did the wedding party introductions. I missed a good party, that's for sure!

I buy a dress for every wedding I go to. Everyone is just mad because they don't get to pick out the dress the buy if they are the MOH.

Well...true. in my defense the only other dress I've ever spent this much on was a renaissance festival costume. Which I've worn enough times to consider it money well spent. I could probably wear this dress again, but I'm not likely to.

Stupid PB ate my post. DH's family normally wedding receptions that are a cross of church pot luck dinners and a kids birthday party. You get ordered to bring something for the dinner which everyone eats and then they open the presents. The stopped letting people just bring what they wanted because they felt they wouldn't get a good mix of things for the dinner. So now they call up people and tell them what they are expected to bring. In our case we are six hours away. Just what I want to have to do after a six hour car ride with the whole family dressed for a wedding, stop at KFC to pick up the fried chicken for a relatives wedding reception. It is also mostly a teeth optional kind of crowd. So the nice new dress is a little out of place. I got tired of people asking if we were going to a funeral aftwards so now I just wear black pants and a top.

beach - that sounds like a decent way to host a wedding if you don't have much money. I know that if you are poor you aren't allowed to spend any time with family or friends, and you shouldn't be allowed to celebrate anything, until you go to work and earn enough money to be fancy (but then you don't want to share it with family and friends, because they should buy their own damn dinner.) But, why not? If everyone enjoys it - I just don't see a problem with it. I think it was nice that they gave you something easy to get, and really, not all that expensive. What would you have rather done? Packed a cooler full of food and brought it from home on that car ride?

What would you have rather done? Packed a cooler full of food and brought it from home on that car ride? That's the thing. We weren't asked anything. We were ordered to bring the KFC because it was the most expensive and we are the "rich" ones. We were absolutely expected to give them a gift also. DH's sister and mother made a big point that since we didn't go to the shower we should give them two gifts for the wedding. Strangely enough I remember you posting on that EE thread. I am pretty sure you gave me the best idea for a gift. It was to get nice dinner wear type things and put the KFC in it for the buffet. I got a set of temptations serveware and the KFC. It is not the "we don't have enough money so will everyone help" that bothers me about DH's family because thatisn't how it is said. It is the calling us and ordering us to bring food and a large gift and telling us how much money we make so it is the least we can do since we are so rich. I am probably fed up after thirty years of being told what to do.

I had a good old fashioned redneck shotgun wedding. The only things we had to pay for was the marriage license & my nice cheap Kroger flower bouquet. I didn't have a bridal shower, we didn't have bachelor/bachelorette parties. We went to the JP's office and my boss, who happened to be a judge for a day job surprised us by stepping in instead of the regular judge. The JP ceremony was supposed to cost us $50, but for whatever reason by whoever, it was taken care of. I wore a nice borrowed dress. There was no wedding party, no MOH or best man. I was a bartender when we got married, so our "reception" more like just a big party, was held at the bar (owned by the judge that married us). All the food, booze, decorations, and even pics were covered by friends & family. One of my customers was a photographer, so she took all the pics for free. We've been married for 20 years this October. We like to joke that who says a cheap shotgun wedding/marriage can't last.

That does suck. I mean, KFC still isn't very expensive - even if it was the "expensive" thing. But it is tough when there is not only income/wealth differences in families, but more so when people feel that it should be considered for anything more than compassion. (Like, I wouldn't call my BIL and say "Hey, we should all chip in and buy your parents a new Cadillac for their anniversary.")

973, the best thing about this is that someday the ones who "order" you about will not be around anymore. Live for the day.

Getting told to bring the most expensive item because you're "rich" is also a bit harsh and uncalled for. Geez, someone needs a spine here.

KFC? I didn't know anyone really ate that stuff. Seriously, that stuff looks awful, like a heart attack in a box. Maybe it isn't such a bad idea to bring it and lots of it! Just don't eat it yourself!!

First off - KFC is pretty awesome. Not healthy, but awesome.
Doesn't a bucket cost like $15? Is this really something to get your panties in a wad about?

I have gotten to the point where I just let the phone to to voice mail and if we happen to be up there we let her know in advance. It hasn't been important enough yet for her to drive five minutes from her house to where we have been to see us yet, for all the noise she makes about us abonding her. DH's mom had a massive stroke years ago and has been in a nursing home ever since. It is one of life's ironies that I am one of the few people she remembers. I do feel bad for the neice and nephews. Our family and FIL are the only close family they have, and because of their mother they have only seen any of us a few times. My gut reaction is I want to send a check for $500 and our regrets for any other comand preformances. It seems like it would be perfect. We get out of a long drive and a massive headache and they get the only thing they seem to want from us. Then I feel bad that my kids didn't get to grow up knowing their cousins and their cousins knowing their only uncle. So I'm sure it will be back to normal for me by the time the next thing comes along.

Well not the most expensive thing in the world but not $15 either. A big bucket is $40ish and we needed two big buckets at least. Thruthfully we probably needed three but DH didn't want to push it. Personally I love KFC but only eat it once every couple of years because i really don't want to have to be buried in a piano box.

It may not be such a bad thing. You wouldn't want your children to be around influences that aren't on the same page as your own. We have a cousin who is basically excluded from everything family oriented. The last time his parents asked if he could come, they were told NO and that if they told him about it and he came, they'd be invited to leave right along with him. Some how him being ostracized doesn't clue him into better behavior. But no way would I want my kids to ever meet him and my cousins agree with it and their kids as well. So you can include one person and exclude about a dozen if you do.
