We started out in the early 80s and those were different times; some of the things that we did probably could not be replicated today. When we started out (without student loans), we lived off of one salary and saved the other to take care of any REAL emergencies, to put a down payment on a home, and for larger purchases (cars, furniture, appliances, etc.). We drove our cars for 10-13 years and usually bought used. We have never paid interest on anything except real estate (including cars). We started saving for retirement at age 24 contributing the max allowed and never looked back. We continued to contribute the max even after we purchased our first home in 1985 and when we became a single income family in 1987. DH passed on job offers from other companies even though he would have gotten salary increases to do so. He opted to stay with the same company for his entire career so that he could collect a pension and receive retiree medical. You guys already know that we made being smart consumers a priority......in ALL areas. I think those are the most important things we did. When you can save money from every pay check it makes a huge difference in how you feel about work, psychologically speaking. All very good advice. Look at that--I'm on my way to early retirement! (I hope.) I think most of that is still doable, except maybe the pension part. I do feel good every time I get a paycheck, knowing that it's going toward being able to quit some day. (Not because I'm living from check to check like a lot of people.) Thanks for sharing!

Guess I am going back to my OLD shopping day. When my kids were toddlers (now 34/38) I would shop on Wed. I could often find many items on sale for the coming ad plus get current stuff.
Both my independent stores plus all my fruit/veg markets run their sales Wed-Tue. My fav fruit/veg store gives 5% off to seniors on Wed. Now local Jewel & Dominick’s (Safeway) are hopping on the Wed start bandwagon. I wonder how this will affect the newspaper ad inclusion. Right now it is Wed ads for Thur sales and is included in my 4 day/week subscription. The way the Chicago Tribune has cut back on what is included on what days I suspect I am glad my subscription is over in a week or 2.
Weather is supposed to be good at least 1 day this weekend so I was hoping for a good chicken sale so I can grill some up with mesquite. Got my wish. Legs are on sale for 0.79 at the same store I HAVE to hit to update my toll road pass. One stop to cover 2 needed errands is GREAT!! Price is best I have seen in a couple months.

I got the $3EB in my email, but DH didn't get one for his card in his email so I guess it's hit and miss.

Thanks for the heads up. I also go the $3 EB. Unfortunately it was not attached to the card I thought it was so it put a little wrinkle in my plan. But I made my way through. I also got lots of CRTs and managed to get antacid and 2 travel deodorants for cheap, using a GC to pay the tax and 30 cents or so. I paid $3.50 for CVS Airborne with a vitamin Q, about half price. I got the Ivory 3 pack and case of bottled water on sale for just over a dollar after $3 EB.
Lots of goodies at Sprouts today. Too many to list. I found a new coupon match-up site that was pretty helpful. As usual, my prices are a little higher but it was pretty good.

On one of my cards I got TWO $4/20 and a 25% off CRT. Let me get this straight again. No sale or excluded items. I can use the $4/20, then the 25% off, which will take 25% off each remaining non-sale item. Right?
I didn't see that photo was excluded. If I develop two rolls of film it should go like this, I hope:
2 x $9.99+ .02 filler = $20 -$4/20 -$4 (25% off $16) = $12 Right?
