Why is it that most Chinese restaurants have names like "#1 China buffet" or "Super Great Wall Chineese Buffet." Why do the owners of these establishments feel the need to embellish their restaurants names with things like "super" or "#1" or "ultimate." You don't see that anywhere else as far as I can tell.
It just seems strange how many asian restaurants are named. Anyone else notice this?

I guess there are only so many "Chinese" names that you can use in English language. So you need to put "super" in the name to distinguish you from the others.

the largest Chinese grocery in Boston is called the "Super 88" so it looks like it's not limited to the restaurants.

Why is it that they use American (ok, odds are they originated some place else but I associate it with American food) food like carrots and broccoli and baby corn in Chinese food. There was a place in my hometown that used watercress, bok choy, and a whole bunch of other vegetables I have no idea what they were and they were SOOO good. Then they closed down unexpectedly, if I had know I probably would have asked for the recipe. I've been on a hunt for good Chinese food since. ![](http://syonidv.hodginsmedia.com/vsmileys/melancholy.png)

I eat at Super Dragon. I never thought about it. I guess it could just be "Dragon Chinese Food."
I probably wouldn't be excited to go to "Lenny's Chinese Food" although, maybe "Renny's."

I always figured it was because of the disdain they have for us stupid barbarians. They figure they can slap #1 Super China Buffet on a sign, and our dumb asses will be like, "Damn, this must be the greatest Chinese food in the world." It's pretty insulting really.

What's the significance of the number "88"? It seems pretty common but you never see "Super 91 Wall" or "27 Dragon Buffet."

it's not so much the 88, but the 8 is a special number to the Chinese. I can't remember the whole history why, but China was lobbying damn hard to get the 2008 Summer Olympics because of the timing - Opening Night was 8/8/08

Well 8 might be special in Chinese, but 88 is also a code used by neo-Nazis. H is the 8th letter of the alphabet, so 88 is HH and Heil _____. A couple years ago Target was selling this football style jerseys with 88 because they thought the jerseys look cool, but had to pull them off the market as requested by the Politically Correct lobby.
This also reminds me of the business that used to put AAA in front of the names "AAA Radiator Repair Shop" because it gets you listed first in the phone book. Maybe 50 years from now nobody will understand because they don't know waht the yellow pages were.

Ah, kinda like how 311 is code for KKK? (K = 11th letter of alphabet). I remember there being some controversy about the band 311 for that reason. Who thinks these things up? ![](http://images.proboards.com/new/tongue.png)

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Numbers_in_Chinese_culture#EightThe word for "eight" (八 Pinyin: bā) sounds similar to the word which means "prosper" or "wealth" (發 – short for "發財", Pinyin: fā). In regional dialects the words for "eight" and "fortune" are also similar, e.g., Cantonese "baat3" and "faat3". There is also a visual resemblance between two digits, "88", and 囍, the "shuāng xĭ" ("double joy"), a popular decorative design composed of two stylized characters 喜 ("xĭ" meaning "joy" or "happiness"). The number 8 is viewed as such an auspicious number that even being assigned a number with several eights is considered very lucky. And I think the use of superlatives is not unique to Chinese restaurants. Otherwise we'd have Burger Prince or Burger Count instead of Burger King! And is Ultimate Frisbee really that much better than regular Frisbee?

Hell yeah it is. Regular frisbee is just two people playing catch. It would be like asking if a baseball game is really that much better than two people playing catch with a baseball and gloves.

I always believe those signs. If my store called Fruit and Veggies - I sell produce. If it called #1 Super China Buffet - that must be THE #1 Super China Buffet! You don't really like people, do you? Why? Have you been abused as a child?

That's not real bright.
And if a store opened right next door that was called Better Fruit and Veggies which sold lower quality produce for 20% more would they be a better store?
What's to like? Most of them are morons.
Why are they morons, or why don't I like morons? The first one is one of those mysteries of life kind of things. We somehow evolved to be the top predator on the planet and built these amazing civilizations, all the while most of us can barely scrape up two brain cells to rub together. As to the second one, well I'm not sure really. I've always gotten more stimulation and enjoyment out of talking to people with active minds, I guess. Don't get me wrong, I like dumbasses in moderation too. Reality TV and whatnot is fun once in a while. Like a guilty pleasure.
Yes.

When I was in China, they had a popular dish called Tiger & Dragon..... It was cat & snake on a bed of rice. I learned not to ask what it was after that.

Names like the OP describes may exist with some buffets on highways but I actually can't think of any. The names are pretty normal here - Hong Kong Kitchen and things like that. No #1 or Super anything.
Could it be because they are pretty common in my area and the towns are small?

We used to have a Great Wall of China Buffet near us - but the health department finally closed it down. I think "Great" described the wall, not the buffet.
