::Our practices started in February, our season ends this weekend, and I'm pretty sure that one use of ass was the only time the team has heard me swear.::
Which is exactly why it can be so motivational. It's the reason why if my brother called me a "fucking idiot" it wouldn't even register, but if my wife did i'd think I'd really done something terrible.

Conversations about the effectiveness of cursing always make me think of my mother. Woulnd't even let me say "damn", NEVER curses. I've heard her curse less than 5 times in her life (as in like "damn", "ass", not even necessarily major ones), and every time I knew it was FUCKING serious. Kind of like telling someone you love them. If you say it all the time to everyone, it doesn't really mean much, but it means a lot when used and you really mean it. I think your Mom's A wise person. ![](http://images.proboards.com/new/smiley.png)

If adult coaches want to curse at adult players, fine. But, in the schools where kids are not supposed to curse, then it is totally hypocritical and WRONG to allow coaches to do so.

How about out of control players. It's only a game folks. Referee punched in face by teen player dies6:07 AM EDT, Sun May 5, 2013 A referee for a recreational soccer league who was punched in the face by a teenager has died, police in Salt Lake City said. Ricardo Portillo, 46, was refereeing a game in the Salt Lake City suburb of Taylorsville on April 27 when he cited a player for an infraction and issued him a "yellow card." In soccer, a yellow card is a caution to the player; a second results in his ejection from the game. The decision, police say, prompted the 17-year-old player to turn around and punch Portillo in the face. At first, authorities thought Portillo suffered only minor injuries from the assault. But after he was taken to a hospital, doctors discovered he had suffered serious internal head injuries, police said. For seven days, he remained in critical condition. "He loved soccer," his daughter Johana Portillo told CNN's Jake Tapper on Friday. "We just never thought this was going to happen. He loved what he did and it was his passion." She added: "The doctor says only a miracle will bring my daddy back." On Saturday night, Portillo died from his injuries. www.cnn.com/2013/05/05/us/utah-soccer-death/index.html?hpt=hp_t2Authorities will conduct an autopsy.

Coaches should follow the SAME standards and guidelines of behavior as the teachers and students, period. NO EXCEPTIONS.

We give curse words more power because we ban then in some areas and discourage them in others. The whole idea of "protecting kids" from "bad" words is silly.

For the Bobby Knight example earlier, I think there's a huge difference in the acceptability of his style of coaching in college and in high school or earlier. Every one of those players Knight had, at least after the first few years, made a conscious choice to play for Knight knowing how he is. You don't get to pick your high school coach in most cases. In general, I would say profanity is acceptable in high school in the "Get on the fucking ball" sense, but there's a line of how out of control you can be without losing some of your players. Bobby Knight is past that line, but he doesn't get those players because they know (or should know, by 18) whether that works for them. I would probably avoid cursing any younger than high school.

Well, again, you can't have a set of rules for teachers and the kids and NOT apply them to the coaches. Is it really a hardship for a coach to NOT curse and swear? DH has been coaching T ball, minor league, little league, football and basketball and he doesn't curse or swear. And, i coach 5th grade girls basketball and and i don't find any need to curse and swear nor would i. ![](http://syonidv.hodginsmedia.com/vsmileys/idunno.gif)

I wouldn't let my kids play for a coach that did that. Beyond hi school, it's their choice, but during, it's mine. DS wouldn't play for a baseball coach because he was a nasty man. League wouldn't do anything about him so finally the parents ganged up at a meeting and said their kids wouldn't play for said coach. After he only had his son and two other guys that would play for him, the league had to listen to us. He was asked to resign. Came back after season started as an assistant coach, though. No getting rid of this sucker.

I was more offended by the anger than the words. If he was that angry but yelling "You are a poo-poo head" - well, I would probably laugh, but I still wouldn't be impressed and want to join his winning team.
