Nasgul, I'm so sorry that happened to your DH. I hope he is feeling better. I hope you're able to get some rest. Don't forget to take care of yourself while you're taking care of DH.

Thanks everyone. DH is much better tonight. He is walking many circuits around the halls, pushing his iv pole. His color and fevers are better, and he's asking questions about the Hud Hut project. He had a rabbi that is a chaplain at the hospital visit him for al ong time today, and I think he got a lot of benefit from her kindly visit. He was able to talk about losing his first wife, brother, and father. He seemed renewed. Maybe he'll be able to come home tomorrow. ![](http://images.proboards.com/new/wink.png)

Oh, I sure hope so, Nasgul. It's so nice he got to talk to someone who could help him work through some things that might have been troubling him. So often, a bit of kindness from someone who can just listen is better than all the medicine we can give.

I forgot to buy the thermometer but will get one tomorrow. We have asked for the Inf. Dis. consul twice now. It's in the record. They took all new samples of blood and urine instead. If anything goes wrong, we will own a piece of the university health system.

I also disagreed with my friend suing, after giving birth to an infant with a genetic disorder and the baby died the same day. not everyone is meant to live, and suing the doctor is not the way to grieve. ![](http://images.proboards.com/new/sad.png)

You have a kid or two on state assisted health ins, so I believe that you are contributing to the issue, at that. Screw up my husband's medical care and hurt or kill him, and you have a possible legal suit. Simple as that.

Nazgul - That procedure is normally extremely simple and well tolerated. The "seeds" should have come either pre-sterilized in individual packets or the department (rad onc?) should have sterilized them themselves. Ask about their sterilization procedures and if the dates on the packages were within JACHO limits (not expired). Was your husband feeling fine that morning of the procedure? Usually it would take 12+ hours for an infection to set in from that sort of procedure so if he was discharged with a fever (a few hours later) then I would be honestly surprised if it were caused by the procedure itself. It may be a coincidence. They should have measured his blood pressure at the very least prior to the procedure, so I would inquire about the details before signing up with a lawyer. If they DID neglect their procedures or something wasn't sterilized properly, then I would definitely be talking to the patient safety representative and risk management at their hospital and seeing what they will be doing abou tit. But what do I know, I'm one of those heartless money grubbing no-bed-side-manner medical professionals. ![](http://images.proboards.com/new/tongue.png)

He's been put on oral Bactrim for the next four MONTHS Umm, I was on IV antibiotics for 24 weeks and oral ones for another 6 or so weeks. This is nothing that you want to fool around with. I am still concerned that you did not get a consult with an ID doc, Nas. IME, they tend to put you on 2 oral antibiotics to avoid antibiotic resistance issues. Did they tell you what bug he was infected with? I also want to suggest that you start pumping probiotics into your DH. Antibiotics are going to screw up with your GI tract. Also, keep an eye out for any possible yeast infections (usually around the groin) and jump on that with an OTC anti fungal before it becomes a mess.

Thanks very much for all of the ideas from the medical professionals for his aftercare, and for all of the well-wishers. He's very fluid-overloaded at this time, and has a constant cough. I will have his medical records looked over. I'm not saying that we're automatically signing up with a lawyer. I do have concerns, however. He likes the doctor and doesn't want any lawsuit. They were never able to isolate the source of the infection, because although they did say he had bacteremia at the begining, neither the blood or urine showed anything on either sets of cultures. We never did see an Inf. Dis. doc. despite two requests. He definitely had (has ) an infection because of high elevation in his white blood cell count, wide fever curve for three days, plus all of the other symptoms that he had. It pisses me off because I code the inpatient stuff for that service, and I know they could have done him some good. I'm just being careful. I'll ge some probiotics tonight, along with the still-forgotten thermometer. He's already prone to yeast infections so I will watch for those symptoms. He's amenable. Right now, I'm waiting for the tree trimmer to come so he can get paid for his work yesterday on the Hud Hut. Then, I'm off to the store. ![](http://images.proboards.com/new/smiley.png)

The number 1 way to prevent a lawsuit is to have people like you. Even if you are totally at fault, people won't want to believe it. Make sure he likes the doctor because of competency, not because they shared a love of fishing, or something like that.

If you have the kind of insurance that doesn't require a referral, you can just go ahead and make the appointment yourself. If you need a referral and your PCP won't make one, call the insurance company to see if they will authorize it based on his current infection status. Glad to hear your DH is home and doing better. Sending good thoughts for continued improvement and a speedy recovery.

Nasgul I'm so happy your DH is home! I hope he heals well and quickly. Are you back at work? When DH contracted a hospital infection in Oct he was in the hospital on IV antibiotics for 8 days, and then released with massive doses of two oral antibiotics for 3 months. He was very, very weak and tired the entire time he was taking them and only started regaining his strength after he stopped. Just so you know. Hugs to both of you. ![](http://images.proboards.com/new/smiley.png)
