My dear husband had a procedure on Thursday morning to place some non-radioactive guide seeds in his prostate for his upcoming radiation therapy. He went through the procedure with flying colors, walked out, and seemed just fine. He even ran some errands in the afternoon.
What neither of us knew was that he was evidently discharged with a fever of 102, according to our family doctor in the same health system.
Yesterday, he seemed a little off in the morning. His breathing was a little bit labored and his color was off. He insisted on going out to a paint sale to pick up a gallon of paint. In the meantime, I got a 1:45 p.m. appt. with his family doctor to check him out. When he got back I told him about the appointment and that he HAD to go. ( Did I say that he is kind of stubborn ? ). He actually agreed, and said he was going to lie down for the 45 mins. before we had to leave.
By the time we got to the appt., he was found to have a terribly high fever, what turned out to be hypotension, shallow breathing, sweating, and they thought he might be having a heart attack. They transported him to the hospital, where he was admitted.
He didn't have a heart attack, but he does have bacteremia. He almost died yesterday. I feel so badly. I did keep an eye on him, but I didn't catch it fast enough. He is on IV's to rebalance his circulatory system, and is on high-level IV antibiotics.
This all happened within 26 hours of the procedure, and he had been put on prophylactic Cipro prior to the surgery.
He is stable today, but very, very weak, but his fevers are better.. They'll be adjusting his meds tomorrow.
You can never be too careful. Any prayers and good thoughts for this wonderful man would be greatly appreciated.
I will be investigating why he was discharged with a 102 degree temp and neither of us were told, but that's down the road.

Thanks you guys. I'm sitting here crying right now. I'm at home because I'm just so tired. The poodle and I are watching "Django." It's really neat how reminiscent it is of the Franco Nero movies from the 60's. I like the justice angle, too. I guess I'll go back and watch some more of it on Xfinity. Last night, the poodle was so lonely for her Dad that she kept elaborately sniffing at the bottom of the door into the house from the garage, begging to go outside to check for her daddy in the front yard, sitting on his chair, and making little crying noises. She did sleep with me, however. Today, she feels better because she heard his voice on the phone. ![](http://images.proboards.com/new/sad.png) We'll work through this as long as he comes home.

Constant stream of good thoughts coming your way! Hope this resolves favorably soon. Please don't beat yourself up for 'not catching it sooner'. It sounds like you were on the ball. But even then things happen.
Let us know if there is anything we can do...

Prayers for you & your DH! ![](http://syonidv.hodginsmedia.com/vsmileys/pray.gif) I used to work with ER charts, but in talking with friends it seems the medical system is getting dumb & dumber. I don't know if it's fewer people scheduled to take care of more people, or, if like my current MD, he's actually "timed" on how long he spends with each patient, & penalized for spending "too much time". Something is broken in our health care system. ![](http://images.proboards.com/new/angry.png) Keep us updated, o.k.? ![](http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff155/JiminiChristmas/smileys/hug.gif)

I am so sorry. I had an appendectomy back in 1987, and they kept me in the hospital for a WEEK because I had a fever. It is disheartening to know they release you with one now.

Thanks very much, everyone. I'd like to call DH before I go to bed ( I got worn out on Django and haven't finished it as of yet ), but I'm afraid I'll wake him up. He was better today before I came home. His temps are under 100, now. We went for a "hall walk" for a pretty long ways, pushing the IV pole. He was able to walk without my holding onto him. I'm hoping they'll release him in a couple of days. Just keep the positive thoughts going. You guys are great. Django is weird. ![](http://images.proboards.com/new/tongue.png)

I'm sorry Nas.....BTDT myself last year.
I would like to suggest that they check out his lungs, heart and spine for infection. Apparently, these are the major places where a bacteremia sets up house. For me, it wound up in my lungs too (as well as my hips).
I would also ask for a consult with an infectious disease doc ASAP.
It does make you one sick cookie.

Praying, praying, praying.
Before he comes home, please make sure you've got a good, accurate thermometer at home so you can keep an eye on his temperatures ... especially once he stops various antibiotics, etc. (You may already have a good one, but it came to mind so I wanted to mention it!)

Thanks everyone, and thanks for the ideas on the infectious disease consult and the thermometer. I'll ask for the consult today when I'm up at the hospital. I'll buy the thermometer.

I hope your husband has a speedy recovery.
