I heard someone else say that there won't be trash cans at public events anymore. I guess we should all bring our own bags and pack it out. Yeah, right - that will happen. Sheesh!

I do this already. I carry a plastic bag in case I need a garbage can quickly.

I thought the video showed the backpack on the ground next to the garbage can located between the fencing and the street where the marathon runners were. what does that matter? The point is just to do something. It doesnt matter if it does any good. Remember, a child died. We have to do something. It was much more than "a child died". But then we have had a Senator and now a resident receive a letter laced with Ricin, and no one is saying let's ban the mail, so I get your point.

Around here there's plenty of talk on the news about whether Houstonians will ever be able to feel safe in crowds again. I guess if we don't over-react, we look like we don't care.

I feel we are coming full circle. Remember in the 70's, when it was all about littering and the Indian crying. We spent a gagillion dollars training two generations to find leaving trash anywhere but a trash can completely despicable. And now, they are going to take all the trash cans away.

But it was someone's child-don't forget that. As to whether eliminating trash cans will do anything, who knows.

"I am willing to risk the lives of my children or grandchildren or my life to have public access to trash cans."
I hope for your sake it never happens.

At a department store today, I saw pressure cookers on the shelf. For the time being.
Of course, it's not as if adrenaline-addicted warrior-cult whackos are amassing hoards of pressure cookers to supplement their arsenals... yet.
Then again, who can say? Now that the violence-fanatic whackos have been shown how to use them for maximum malicious effect...

In the subways in Paris they have gotten rid of all of the traditional trash cans. They have these open frame things with see through plastic bags in them. It's a little unsightly, but functional, I suppose.

It was reported today by our local NBC station that they were able to buy a pressure cooker, a key component of the bomb, for under $50. The reporter even held it up in her hands while she stood "on location" downtown (not that any location in Houston is at all relevant) discussing the bombing.

I am willing to risk the lives of my children or grandchildren or my life to have public access to trash cans. I imagine you are willing to risk the lives of your children or grandchildren to have the convenience of using public highways. Because every time anyone gets on a public highway there is some risk involved. There is safety in the grave. 'Do it for the children' is usually an emotional argument that lacks any level of risk assessment. If you want to do a numbers thing, Guess what the chances are that you are wrong about abortion. If you are pretty sure abortion is not murder, say 99.99999% sure, then you are willing to take some kind of risk of supporting and advocating for the murder of millions. millions? you sure about that?

At the risk of de-railing this awesome thread, did you want steve to say "tens of millions"? He was just referencing the number of abortions. Not really something that is disputed.
Back to the supidity.....
I see that the Rockets are also implementing new security policies even though there is zero reason to believe they are needed....

oh, i apologize. i thought you (steve) were multiplying the certainty by the number of abortions, which would give you a fairly small number. about the same as the number of gun fatalities last year, and way less than the number that died from smoking.

These were reporters, not terrorists. You're giving them (the reporters) too much credit. Afterall, they already think that holding a pressure cooker up on the screen for two seconds actually improves their broadcast....

There is stupid and there is practical. Getting rid of trash receptacles- dumb. Doing nothing- dumb. I am sure anyone would agree that a big rubber can is much more risky than maybe a metal box with a small hole, or maybe having trash collection areas in arenas under control of the vendors could be a good idea, maybe trash chutes into a lower level, whatever. Pretty crappy to attack people with good intentions even if their ideas are less than optimum.

Don't blame us for reporting the facts.
Speaking of, I understand the citizens of Boston have been given extra time to file their taxes.

I agree - there is nothing stopping someone who is determined to put it - say - next to a tree, or under a bleacher, or whatever. The picture of the bomber putting down the backpack makes it look like it was NOT in a trash can. So, we will still get bombed, and we will have a bunch of litter.

Seeing the linked article was probably posted before the facts of where the bombs were placed, the idea of the removal of trash cans just may now be off the table.

It was a knee-jerk reaction, made without any real analysis of the actual situation. But, they did a press release so they could prove how much they care about the general public. How do they pull out now? Do they just leave all the trash cans there and hope no one complains? Or do they do another press release saying that the trash can issue has been reevaluated? This, to me, is a great example of how not to handle a public relations situation.

So what is stupid about a bomb resistant trash can?
Aren't people and authorities already watching out for unattended back packs and similar item? How did these get missed in an area where security is an obvious concern?

How did these get missed in an area where security is an obvious concern? Most cities and communities cannot afford to pay thousands of dollars apiece for public trash receptacles that are designed to be "bomb resistant".

Any year where Patriots day falls on April 15th, the people of MA have until April 16th to file their taxes. Nothing new.

zipity--This is different. They gave the entire county until July to file their taxes. Anyone outside the county but still affected can also call and ask for an extension.
