Laugh all you want but I think it is an excellent service and I am proud of my beau! Olser couple come to our store asking for 6 gallons of spring water (.79 cents per gallon sold for $1.29). We are out. DH says he will go and get it for them in (guess!)...Wal Mart by Noon. He was busy and left at Noon and they had come right after. I said he had left and they need to wait. They asking if he can DELIVER to their house. I almost chased them away when phone rang. It was hubby calling me to tell me that these are his good customers and I should be nice. He knows me too well. I asked their address and phone number.
Water was delivered. DH made $3 and $1 in tips!!!!!!!! Happy end!

$3 is 2/3rds of a gallon of gas. But, if you use the IRS model of 56.5 cents per mile, I hope the round trip, including the Walmart run wasn't more than 5 miles.

Sounds like a ridiculous amount of work and time spent just to earn $4. You think? How about loyalty to a customers? Were they in danger of walking away from your store to start shopping at Walmart? You say your customers are trapped in the area because many of them don't drive or whatever. So how does spending half a day getting water for someone help your business? Now, if you said that your hubby felt that he just wanted to be kind to a mobility-impaired old couple and bring them their water out of the goodness of his soul, that might have been a lovely story. But to brag about your $4 made for all that work? That makes it sound lame.

Your income was ($1.29x6) $7.74 plus a $1 tip = $8.74.
Your costs were water ($.79x6) $4.74 and assuming Walmart is around 5 miles away, gas+car maintenance (10x$.565) $5.65, for a total of $10.39.
Assuming it takes a person 20 minutes to drive to Walmart and shop for the product then another 20 minutes to deliver the product to the customer and return to your store location, that's only 40 minutes of time.
So, you gave up 40 minutes of your time to sell 6 gallons of water at a loss of ($1.65).
This is exactly like that saying used by sucessful businesses everywhere, "We lose a dollar on every sale, but we make it up in volume."

The only risk here is if this customer will take advantage of this and start to think it is a regular service. If it is a one-time thing to keep a customer happy - no problem. If, however, they call you tomorrow and ask you to send your husband over with one banana and 2 gallons of water - you are going to have a little problem. If this couple calls everyone in the neighborhood and tells them that you are now delivering - you've got a PR problem on your hands.

If this couple calls everyone in the neighborhood and tells them that you are now delivering - you've got a PR problem on your hands. Exactly. I'm guessing you guys will be delivering everything for these folks from now on. Here's a story about that. I worked for an HVAC company. One day, our tech, Mike, gets a call by an older lady about her vents smelling bad. He goes out and discovers that a possum has died under her house, causing the smell. Out of the kindness of his heart, he takes and disposes of said dead possum. A few months later, the lady calls us up again and ask for Mike by name. When asked what it was about, she said she had another dead possum and wants to know if Mike can come out and get rid of it. He became her personal carcass removal service until we shut that business down! ![](http://images.proboards.com/new/grin.png)

I will do home/hospital/nursing home visits for elderly clients, especially for wills/health care proxies/powers of attorney. However, there are people who have asked me to do home visits because they don't want to drive to the office. Um, no. Unless you are home bound, you can come see me.

And do sucessful businesses everywhere really say "We lose a dollar on every sale, but we make it up in volume."? I would think if you lose a dollar on every sale than you big selling volume for loss...

How far to their house? You have to use all the mileage - 1/2 mile to wal-mart plus whatever to their house plus whatever back to your store = total mileage.[/span]
