So, 1.5 miles instead of 5?

Can your husband ride a donkey to Walmarts to save money? Forget the donkey....you have to feed it and clean up the poop. Attach bamboo poles to the husband's shoulders. He can balance the water jugs on each end. Good workout for him, saves gas, no additional poop. You're welcome.

If they live so close to Wal-mart - why the hell didn't they go and get their own water? I thought people came to you because Wal-mart was so inconvenient to people that they came to you. And now you are saying that Wal-Mart is a 10 minute walk? And even less for these people? I think you lie.

Fifty six cents a mile is way too high. I was commuting 20,000 miles a year. According to your calculation I would have been spending $11,300 a year on gas, maintenance, and vehicle depreciation.
My car gets 32 mpg. Call gas $4. So I spent $2,500 on gas in a year. That leaves $8,800. We'll assume I change my oil twice at $50 a shot, and buy new tires that year which we'll take out of that single year instead of spreading them over the couple years you get out of a new set of tires, so subtract another $400 for the oil changes and tires. You're telling me my 2004 Focus depreciated by $8,400 in 2012? That would be a neat trick for a 9 year old car that was only worth a few grand at the start of the year.

Tell it to the IRS. That's their rate.

That's the rate you can deduct business miles. That's not the rate I'd use to calculate the profit of delivering a product to a customer.

We don't know what kind of car they are driving. All we know is the standard IRS mileage rate is 56.5 cents. Always a starting point when doing profitability analysis involving auto travel. When doing business modeling, you have to make some assumptions and estimates. In lieu of real and accurate information, you revert to some standard acceptable assumptions.

Even if he flew there on fairy dust, I don't think this trip proves they should start a free delivery service and that will up their revenue.

I do agree that making your customers happy keeps them coming back. Dark, I hope you remembered that in your business plan. Must have a Wal Mart close by. ![](http://syonidv.hodginsmedia.com/vsmileys/tongue2.png)

Well, if you go to the location that is in the same shopping center as Target, you can just run over there and pick up what you need, and then mark it up. No mileage necessary.

But I'm not planning on selling anything they'll be selling. I thought about ripping off Loony's business idea, but around here if you want to buy fresh fruit from weirdo's you just go to the Farmer's Market.

My Target has a rather large toy section, and a decent game and puzzle section. Even if you don't carry the exact same piece, you have to deal with people that will have to choose between going there and getting a suitable substitute. They might also look for some of the more popular items at your store. If someone wants Legos - is your store not going to have legos? A toy store that is devoid of one of the most popular toys of our time? Seems weird.

Your income was ($1.29x6) $7.74 plus a $1 tip = $8.74. Your costs were water ($.79x6) $4.74 and assuming Walmart is around 5 miles away, gas+car maintenance (10x$.565) $5.65, for a total of $10.39. Assuming it takes a person 20 minutes to drive to Walmart and shop for the product then another 20 minutes to deliver the product to the customer and return to your store location, that's only 40 minutes of time. So, you gave up 40 minutes of your time to sell 6 gallons of water at a loss of ($1.65). This is exactly like that saying used by sucessful businesses everywhere, "We lose a dollar on every sale, but we make it up in volume." milee, can you do the same thing using 1/2 a mile to Wal Mart? And do sucessful businesses everywhere really say "We lose a dollar on every sale, but we make it up in volume."? I would think if you lose a dollar on every sale than you big selling volume for loss... If Walmart is only 1/2 a mile away, then why don't the people in the neighborhood walk down there and get their own groceries? I'm calling BS on the idea that it's only 1/2 mile away. If it is, you have bigger problems than we can solve.

Have you ever been in an independent toy store? There's surprisingly little product crossover with the major chain retailers toy sections.
The first part I buy, our Target toy section looks pretty big too. It's mostly variations on the same stuff for entire aisles though. If it's plastic, made in China, and covered in comic book or Disney characters, they've got it. If not, well, there's always online shopping.
I've never seen a decent game and puzzle section in a large retailer. Ever. How many copies of Settler of Catan, Ticket to Ride, Small World, Eclipse, Descent, Mage Knight, Pandemic, Carcassonne, Call of Cthulhu, and Tsuro do they have? Mine doesn't carry a single one of those titles, and they're the 10 best selling board games in 2012.
The 10 best selling card games are Munchkin, Dominion, 7 Wonders, Ascension, Quarriors, BANG!, Lord of the Rings LCG, Dixit, Infiltration, and Fluxx. Our Target has Lord of the Rings I think. That's the only one of the 10.
A bunch of copies of Clue, Monopoly, Risk, Candyland, Sorry, and packs of playing cards doesn't make a decent game selection.

People CAN get to the Wal Mart but they CAN'T carry their purchases back home!!! How dumb is that not to figure it out? These are 70 y/old people! Can YOU carry 6 gallons of water even half-a-mile? Geez!

I admit when I am wrong.
But I am still very good at determining ROI on projects and activities.
