it is so freakin' long. I tried, I really tried, but I couldn't do it. and that Gollum dude talking to himself like a nutjob. What about the good old days where movies were 2 hours max? I knew I wouldn't survive in the theater so I waited for video. Is there something wrong with me?

No idea. I didn't even try.
Although I thought overall they were good movies, the Lord of the Rings Trilogy desperately needed some editing. Each of them could have easily had 1/3 cut and been a better movie for it.

LOL! Damn Arch, how many times you seen that movie? That's the second time you've quoted it in the last few days.

And I can watch the Hobbit because I've been waiting for over twenty years to see that book in movie form. If you aren't a fan of the book I'm not sure why you'd bother watching it at all.

There's a delicate balance they need to strike, they couldn't have edited it much more because they would have offended fans of the books.
ETA: That was strictly for the Lord of the Rings. No way the Hobbit had to be split into 3 movies, and they stuck a bunch of extraneous stuff in there.

I agree with ontrack about the Hobbit. Two movies is a stretch, three is ridiculous. The Lord of the Rings already had a lot of stuff cut out. If they edit out much more of the source material to make the movies shorter why bother making them in the first place?

Actually all the dungeons and dragons dorks were upset with how utterly horrible the first D & D movie was. The franchise has over a dozen new york times bestselling books, but when they make their first movie they didn't put any of those characters or stories on the big screen. Instead it was a lameass script, using lameass characters, written by some dude nobody had ever heard of, and holy crap was it cheesy. It's seriously a little painful to watch.

I am a fan of the book, but the movie was way to long. They adapt other books into movies and don't take as long in the movie....just hit the highpoints.....more than 2 hours and you lost me, I'm sorry I don't care what the movie is....

Bloody hell - there's going to be 3 Hobbit movies?!?! I was really looking forward to renting it in the near future, but it's only the first one? WTF.

I thought The Hobbit was good, but I agree that three movies out of one book is a little bit much. I thought LoTR was really well done though because those books were dense and they made each book into just one movie.
I was just saying the same thing about movies the other day. Back in the day when I was a kid, I would get out a nice VHS tape and look on the back cover to see how long it was. 86 minutes? Perfect! For over 2/2.5 hours, it has to be something really good - like LoTR or Harry Potter.
Lincoln - that movie was extremely long. Yes, it was extremely interesting and Daniel Day Lewis was amazing, but after the first hour and Lincoln's fourth or fifth monologue with the camera slowly zooming in on his face interspersed with people around listening to him with awed looks on their faces, I had had enough.

Pfft. You people have short attention spans. And yet you sit on here all day long, pounding on your refresh button while eagerly awaiting the next response to your ziplock baggie washing thread. Figures. ![](http://images.proboards.com/new/tongue.png)

I've already watched it 3 times and will watch it again soon. I read Tolkien books years ago and remember the animated Hobbit flick and like Dark said it's like getting to watch something you only imagined in your head come to life. For everyone out there that ever read comic books in the last 10-15 years or so the comics adapted to movies have in some cases been awesome and put on screen something you never thought you'd get to see. Some have been horrible Hollywood garbage trying to capitalize on the comic to movie market but the one's that were well done far exceeded many people's expectations.

I can't even bring myself to reread it. And I love Terry Brooks stuff. I've even done Saberhagen's Sword stuff a few times. But Tolkien, nope. Done it twice, hated it both times and will not see the movies either.

The book the Hobbit is nothing like Tolkien's Lord of the Rings. You can read through 4 chapters of the Hobbit in the same time it takes to read a page of The Lord of the Rings.

I failed at reading LOTR in high school. A coworker convinced me to read The Hobbit. I need to finish it. I got through what I needed for the first movie. Someone told me the other movies include other books besides the LOTR trilogy and the Hobbit.
They did add some stuff to The Hobbit like Cate Blanchett as Galadriel.

Don't count on it. The Hobbit was a total sausage fest.

The theatrical release of the hobbit wasn't that bad for length.
If you think that's bad, you should get the Return of the King extended cut DVD. Now THAT'S a looooong movie. I think it clocks in around 4 hours for the whole thing. I reminded myself last time to never watch it all in one day.
Personally, I didn't think the Hobbit was as good as LOTR was. And the pacing of the story seemed off. But that probably had more to do with breaking a relatively short children's book into three movies. Which is probably why they had to add filler of the Dwarves doing sight gags. The "climax" of the movie didn't really feel like a climax.
And to be fair, despite the fact that people complain about how long the movies are, they did cut A LOT of material from the books. A "true" LOTR movie trillogy would have each movie run at least 3 times as long. The hobbit, on the other hand, no way would I have made three movies out of it. MAYBE two if you wanted to stretch it. I agree that they couldn't have cut much more from LOTR and still have it be LOTR.

Right, but why base it purely on the game? They had bestselling books that took place in the game world to base it on. Use those. Built in wider audience, and a story/characters that are proven to appeal to people. At the very least get one of those authors to write the screenplay.

Or read the books. Just don't wanna.

I read the hobbit in 7th grade, it was an assigned book. I have not read it since so I have only remember the main points.
I read the first LOTR book after the movie came out. I do remember it running pretty long in some places. I think the council of Rivendel was like 40 pages. So even the book got kind of long winded in spots.
