Thanks, Angel Me too! I like your new avatar by the way.
I wouldn't want any daycare willy-nilly taking kids places either. That was another thing I liked about Nancy's daycare. They don't do "field trips" (they could, but Nancy herself isn't comfortable doing that). The kids stay right in the house at all times. Babybird does plenty of field trips with my mom so she's good on that score.

Why are daycares taking kids in a van anywhere? That would not be cool in my book. Maybe it was a before/after school program. Or they were going on a field trip. My kid's daycare does fieldtrips occassionally. The coolest was when somehow they got it worked out to get the kids onto Peterson AFB & have them tour some planes. Awesome field trip, although probably underappreciated by 3 yr olds. ![](http://images.proboards.com/new/tongue.png) Before and after school programs are one thing, but don't be putting my 2 year old or even 4 year old in a van and driving them around.

Thanks Angel. I'm really going to miss the director. She rocked, which is why she's getting promoted...
And they didn't leave for disciplinary reasons (well, one did) but one's going back to school, one moved back to Minn, the one resigned out of spite for being written up and I don't remember why the other one left.

Speaking of nothing is perfect one of the daycares in Omaha that has been in operation a long time just got cited for leaving a kid in a van. Second time in two years. As of last night three people had been fired and the state was looking at revoking their license since this is the second time they have been cited for it. So you can pick a by the book on paper perfect daycare and still have them one day royally screw up. You have decide what you can live with. There is no such thing as a perfect daycare out there.
Why are daycares taking kids in a van anywhere? That would not be cool in my book. Some kids get help with speech or whatnot. Some day cares will work with you on that. I know mine will. I don't let my kids on buses except for field trips though. We've had a couple of deaths from kids left in day care vans here. I know it's not my dcp but I'm not willing to take that particular risk.

Meh. My kids go on a bus not a van & they have signed permission slips before each field trip. Honestly I am more paranoid about the walking field trips because the center is downtown with a decent amount of traffic & people. But, I can't keep them from having a life forever & it is nice that they visit the library, fire station, sheriffs office, etc. Plus, it has really helped my son learn his way around which I do like.

My daycare lady is certified to transport and her vehicle and the car seats are inspected quite a bit by the state. Probably safer and better installed than mine! Occasionally last summer when only my son was there she'd bring him over to my workplace for lunch and we'd have a picnic at the park a block away, or she'd meet me there after work to save me time. That was kind of nice. She just had a baby a few weeks ago so that probably won't be happening again this year. ![](http://images.proboards.com/new/sad.png)

Exactly. Why is there a van driver that is in charge of the kids in the first place and why is an admin assistant responsible? I don't want my kids with a van driver or an admin assistant. I want them with the day care provider or someone like that. Granted, my 4 year old takes swimming lessons at her daycare, which is also risky, but it is with a licensed swim instructor with a licensed lifeguard.

I am curious as to why a 4 year old couldn't get out herself. My son could have figured that out.
The fact that it mentions the parents drove her to daycare the next day makes me think this is some sort of to/from daycare van. I know if you are in our preschool headstart program & low income you can arranged transportation to & from school here. I don't know anyone that does, but I am aware the option exists.
And why would you take your kid back to the same daycare? Unless it was literally only a problem concering the van driver, then no way my kid is going back.

Firebird, I'm glad you feel good about leaving your kids there. It sounds like a good place. I'll tell you my story, even though you've made your decision, just to give you a different perspective.
My DCP "Lisa" runs an in home daycare that sounds very similar to yours: it's a split level house, the lower level is the daycare and the upper level is the living area/home. Lisa came very highly recommended, I checked her out, and I did an on site visit to meet her and the kids before I signed up my little guy. She's licensed for 6 kids with no more than 2 kids under the age of 2 at any one time. She has several part time kids, and about 4 of us are full time. She had one incident on her record, in which their dog bit one of the kids. I asked her about it: as soon as the dog bit the kid (a small nip on the hand, BTW), the dog was re-homed with a family member. My guy loves daycare, loves her, and has been there happily for almost 2 years now.
About a year ago, Lisa's daughter had a child. Lisa checked with the state about getting licensed for additional kids and bringing her daughter on as a registered assistant. The daughter ran a licensed in-home day care at her house before she got married and moved into their current home. The requirements for a license 4 additional kids were ridiculous. She would have had to build a parking lot - in a residential area? Yeah, right. After meeting with all of her parents, Lisa decided to bring in the additional kids and pay her daughter without pursuing the expanded license. She gave all of us the opportunity to leave. None of us did.
Her daughter has been working with her for about a year, and the expanded list of kids has actually been a good thing for us - now my little guy isn't the ONLY guy with 5 little girls, haha. He still knows more about Cinderella than any 2 year old boy should know!
Anyway, I just wanted to give you another positive story about an in-home daycare to ease your mind.

I’d be looking for another daycare. I think it’s going to be a matter of time before this one gets shut down.

Yeah, 3 employees signed a piece of paper claiming they did something that they didn't do (something that is extremely important to keeping the kids safe). My kid isn't going to that daycare again. If the director is taking these shortcuts, then you know everyone else in the center is as well. The whole center should be shut down for allowing this to happen twice!

I hope Babybird transitions easily to her new surroundings, too!

Thanks guys.
generic, thanks for sharing your story! That's really interesting to me. What sort of penalties would your DCP be facing if the state found out about the extra kids and the assistant? Would they shut her down?

Seems odd to me that she recently got approved for more children, yet the additional people she employs to do so are not registered. I'd give her the benefit of the doubt, call her and alert her that there must be some sort of mix up & can she clear it up with the licensing entity ASAP because you really were impressed with her operation and would like to have your child there.
Getting an infant on a part time schedule is not something daycares like to do because the ratio of caregivers for infants is lower & they potentially have to bring in an extra person to cover during those PT hours to keep the right ration.

Since I linked to this thread, I thought I'd post an update in case anyone is interested. It took nearly a month for us to get Babybird into the daycare because Nancy went on vacation and didn't want Babybird to start at a time when she wouldn't be there (which I thought was very sensible). DH, Babybird and I went to visit her last night to fill out some paperwork and also so DH could meet her and see her place. Everything looks good - and Nancy's full-time roster now includes a pair of twins close to Babybird's age ![](http://images.proboards.com/new/smiley.png) This is bad in the sense that we wouldn't be able to score a full time slot on a moment's notice if we suddenly needed it, but good in the sense that a) I don't anticipate needing that anytime soon, and b) she'll get a chance to hang with kids her own age/size. I think this is going to be a great experience for Babybird and she seemed to really like Nancy, which is awesome. We'll see how it goes, but I'm excited to get another DCP in the mix. She's at the perfect age for it - any older and she'll be real hesitant about strangers. We're starting to see a bit of that already.
