I remember when they picked this guy not too long ago, there was a lot of criticism about picking someone so elderly. After having a 50 year reign by John Paul, they knew they weren't going to get even half that from Benedict. And now, he is resigning, instead of just dying like most of his predecessors. Do you think they will go a different direction this time - younger? Maybe someone a little less anglo-saxon? I know there was some talk about going Hispanic/Latin, etc. I'm not catholic, but I certainly understand the power of that position, and I'm interested in it as a signal of the direction of the catholic church. www.reuters.com/article/2013/02/11/us-pope-confirm-idUSBRE91A0A120130211

I read that this morning. I read he was finished as of 2/28 and that they will have a new Pope "by the end of March". What happens in the meantime? Do they appoint an interim?

God will just have to wait to have his message delivered.

So, I'm not Catholic in any way shape or form, but the drama and ritual involved in picking a new Pope is pretty fun to watch. I'm curios if they'll bite the bullet and go Hispanic this time. Fastest growing demographic in the church, and all the most staunchly Catholic countries are in South America. I figure it's bound to happen sooner or later.

God will just have to wait to have his message delivered. I sure wouldn't want to be the one that has to tell Him that.

I googled "Front runners for new pope" and got an article that says this: Several front-runners to replace the Pope are already being discussed, including Ghanaian-born Peter Turkson and Oscar Rodriguez Mariadaga, a Honduran.
A black pope - that would be different.

I'm not sure. There was the recent scandal about documents being leaked from the papacy and the trials. There's a lot of challenges out there right now for Catholics - someone with a less traditional perspective might be welcomed.

I think they're still gonna go with the traditional old white dude. The hispanic countries don't have the clout yet, and their Cardinals haven't made it up hte political food chain yet.

I don't care if the guy is white or not, but I would really like to see them pick someone who is under 70. John Paul was in his 50's. That would be nice. Let's get some young whippersnapper, in his late 50's.

...I'd go with a Spaniard or a South African... must be conservative... someone "less traditional" could be the death knell of the papacy within two generations... but it wouldn't shock me to see Bergoglio or Sandri out of Argentina get the nod...

Let's have the new guy look like this: You would definitely increase the numbers of women and gay men in the church.

That's what they said in 2005, but then they put a 78 year old white guy in. I was very disappointed.

What good is a hot priest?? It would be like a hooker with lockjaw and no genitals. What's the point?

Wait, you want to sit in church and day dream about your priest ripping your clothes off. In a Catholic church. If you're that determined to spend eternity in hell just kill somebody and get it over with.

I'm atheist, so I don't really believe in eternity or hell. So, I might as well spend a peaceful hour with some eye candy.

But they're so bland. I'd rather sit home, watch House of Cards and eat Ritz.
