Do you know how many boxes of crackers you can get for the 10% of your salary the church wants?? Even if you make minimum wage that's a shitload of crackers.

I don't care if the guy is white or not, but I would really like to see them pick someone who is under 70. John Paul was in his 50's. That would be nice. Let's get some young whippersnapper, in his late 50's. If you aren't Catholic, I'm wondering why you have criteria in this matter. Or even care to have an opinion. Or have spent any time on this subject?

The Catholic Church allows me to have friends that are Protestant these days. There was a time I would go to hell if I stepped into your church. We have progressed, though. The box messed up on me too.

Skipping all the posts... Really? The Pope quit? WTF? First time a pope has resigned in 600 years. I am NOT Catholic. But I did think that there were some constants in this world, even if I didn't necessarily believe in his faith.

Sunday 8 AM 30 minutes. Noon or 10 AM mass, 1 hour. High Mass, very low attendance. I love the mass, but my attention span isn't that great.

DH was Catholic. The few times I did attend mass with him (and his family's church was Ukrainian Catholic) - the service was 1 1/2 hrs minimum - sometimes longer. What a yawn-fest - done completely in Ukrainian, so I didn't even understand what was being said. And it wasn't that people just came in and sat down. Some were strolling in half-way through the service, or walking out mid-mass. Other's were getting up and wandering around - lighting candles - getting communion and then stopping to chat to other people on the way back to their pews.
As for Pope Benedict's resignation, at least he knows his health would affect whether he could perform his duties, and he'd decided to step down - others before him sometimes have gotten so old and frail, they needed assistance just to get up to the pulpit or make it though a mass.

No for us Saturday Mass was an early Sunday one and it was an hour long. Saturday was at 5PM for an hour. Sunday
was 8AM, 10AM, 1PM & 3PM and each were an hour. During Monday to Friday it was at 7AM & 5PM. Our church
congregation was massive, one of the biggest in Toronto. I used to be a Eucharistic Minister.

I don't think you have to actually BE catholic to understand and
acknowledge that the Pope is a powerful man, and his opinion on things
matter to many in the world. I don't really have a stake in a lot of world leaders,
but I understand they are powerful people and I hope that they are good people and good leaders.

Scandal soon to follow, no doubt.

I doubt there's any scandal to follow. Benedict is in poor health - he resigned for that reason. Perhaps he feels can't fully perform his duties as Pontiff. Schedule alone is grueling.

I never thought of the pope as being a powerful world leader. Now that you mention it, I guess he is. I'll have to think about that. I just always thought he was the church's leader and no one else gave him much thought except people of that religion.

That's twice you've said that - I'll ask again .... why do you presume there's some scandal? Is that a pre-judgement on your part based on some past scandals within the RC church regarding certain priests in the past? Why do you assume that there's scandal behind the Pope's resignation? His health is failing - period. Maybe more rapidly than we (the public) know about. He feels he can't fully perform his duties as Pontiff because of that and has decided to resign - it was probably a very difficult decision for him to make and I highly doubt he made it lightly or in haste.

I'm guessing it has more to do with the fact that most other Pope's die in office. They get pretty damn decrepit and don't step down.
