I found someone to clean and I think I am going to have her start after the holidays. I mentioned to her that I have a big clutter problem that I'm overwhelmed with and she said she could help me with that too So, it probably is going to cost me a bit, but maybe I can FINALLY tackle the clutter in this house once and for all! That is, if I can get over the embarrassment of having a stranger in to see the mess.

Oooh, do it, Constanz! It could be such a fantastic thing for you! Good for you for giving her a chance!
ETA: As I've mentioned before, my sister had the same issues. She finally got someone in to help her, it truly changed her life. What's the worst that can happen? I'd give it a couple of months (not just a few weeks). If you're not happy with the person or your progress, you can always change your mind, and let her go. And it could also encourage the other family members who keep Stuff in your house to finally go through it. If nothing else, if she doesn't have your allergy issues, she can help you out in the basement.

Well, the last of the Christmas cards are in the mail. (Unless I get one from someone I didn't send one out to.) Now, I'll just need to write up the ones I'm delivering in person...
I got a lot of mail today. Finally, a stack of Christmas cards, and an equal number of bills (all of them were Mom's). So, I got the bills caught up, & now I've got more stuff to file.
I'm trying to get as much laundry done as possible. The more I do today, hopefully, the less I'll need to do another day. The house looks cleaner, but I'd like to bag up some more stuff for the garbageman tomorrow. I can't disappoint him, you know.
I'd love to get a "professional organizer". But, they might need to be a professional wrestler, to sit on DH to "encourage" him to let go of more of his stuff.

PHEW... I've just managed to escape the dust and dog hair... but the bathroom is done...
and purged! Hubbs even put together 2 yes 2 IKEA cabinents and hung them on the wall, tossed out the old over the toilet holder, and helped me re-organize everything in there...
Then we went to the bedroom since we finished our closets last month in November... and went through all our under the bed boxes.... then we did the dressers and drawers....
Then we took all the furniture out of our room, vacummed, dusted, wiped and cleaned EVERYTHING... and then re-arranged it all.
(We took about 5 garbage bags of stuff to my mom's house for a charity garage sale we will do in March).
We were able to get rid of an entire storage chest at the foot of our bed... and my mom is buying us a wardrobe from IKEA for Hubbs to build for christmas that will fit perfectly in the corner of our room so we can finally get rid of the one we have that has broken drawers and only half the handles...
So HALF our home is now done. Just the outside closet, living room, and kitchen remain!!!!

Wow - sounds like several of you have made some impressive progress. Way to go!
I've got about a day and a half left to work (once I stop goofing off here.   I got the ebay room under control on Sunday. I'm very happy about that. So other than general everyday cleaning - dusting, vacuuming, cleaning the toilet type stuff - I can spend my time off doing things I want to do instead of things that I feel I have to do. That might include some decluttering - I've got some drawers that need to be purged, and there always seems to be too much stuff in the closets - I might work on that.

I need to fold all of the laundry that I washed this weekend and get that put away tonight. I also need to address the Christmas cards so I can get them in the mail. I am normally much earlier than this on the Christmas cards.
Going to be another busy weekend. Dinner with a group of Friends Friday night, Birthday party on Saturday (nephew) plus DH and DS are playing in a tournament, DH's company Christmas party Saturday night and then we have Sunday. Much to my shock DS asked if we would take him to the Mall of America on Sunday so he could buy some new clothes.
DS hates clothes shopping but he had the parents meeting for Youth In Government and the senior girl was talking about appropriate dress code and mentioned that Boys that wear bowties and suspenders get all the girls. DS wore bowties last year but this year he wants to step it up. He has requested bowties, suspenders, a vest and a suit coat. I HATE the Mall of America and that last weekend before Christmas is going to be super crazy there. BUT I love the Boy so I'll suck it up and bring him. He has his annual YIG conference the 9th through the 12 of January so he is anxious to get it all so he has time to learn how to tie a bowtie (rather than do a pre-tied one again)
Hoping to stay on top of things this week since the weekend will be so crazy

Sheila- the boy wanting clothes to "get all the girls" had me laughing! p.s. I have a friend who has a bowtie business if you need a tutorial for the boy!
The last few days have been rough, I have a lot of business stuff happening that's frustrating me so I've not been working very diligently. Today I'm forcing myself to work at my desk all day (not taking the computer to the living room) and chatting with blue eyes to keep motivated.

Start- I'm glad I could make you laugh. Remember when he was just a little thing? Now he's nearly 16 and wanting to dress to impress girls. Oh jeez, what is my world coming too? He was my constant in life and now he's shaking things up.

Well, I pulled about 30 things out of my closet (an estimate) to take to consignment. My clothes now hang on just half of the closet space so I have a lot of spare room. Today was pretty good actually, I finished caulking the baseboards in the master closet and have a single section about 2' wide left to paint tomorrow. I'll need to move my dresser (again) to paint behind it in the bedroom itself but then I'm done! I also touched up the wall paint in a few places so the room is looking good. The bookshelf came out and is now in the hallway and there's less furniture but more space in the bedroom.
Tomorrow I need to take more of the wood for my project outdoors to stain and off gas - it's really smelly and gives me a headache so I have to do it in shifts. Besides, I can't start assembling this thing until I get the right screws.

Ack Rukh I hope you find it!
I went shopping with my friend from school and I bought 3 things. So I need to go through my closet and get rid of a few (1 in / 1 out). I may try to do that today today.
I also still have those last 3 Writing exams left. They are starting to bug me but I just can't face them yet.
And shitepile is piling up too.
I am feeling completely wiped out. And I still have my family's Christmas presents to buy.
I am teaching tomorrow afternoon, so I will try to tackle either shitepile, or my closet, today.
ETA: Productive morning! - Shitepile done, it took an hour. - I went through my 3 shelves and got rid of 4 items. I didn't do the hanging clothes. - I ran my errands. I still have to take DS3 to the orthodontist later.
ETA2: For those last 3 finals, I think I'm just going to put them in my handbag and do them "whenever". I should be able to do one at the orthodontist's office this evening, and another one on the train to and from work tomorrow.

Sheila, aren't teens the best?
Rukh, wishing you the best on finding that car title. Is there a chance you stuffed it in your purse?
Not much production to report around the house (other than I'm doing Mom's laundry right now).
DD's last 2 finals were completed yesterday. I'm being quiet right now so she'll catch up on some sleep. Later she wants me to take her Christmas shopping.

busymom- Teens are soooo much fun (read that with the sarcasm that was intended). We "tortured" the boy last night and made him go to our favorite Schwarma restaurant. He "doesn't like pickles" and they put pickles on their sandwiches and things. I tell him "order it without pickles" and he looked at me like I had three heads. The thought that he could make changes to his order was completely foreign to him. We only had about 20 minutes to feed him before he had to babysit so our options were limited. He did order a sandwich (without pickles) that he was quite happy with. But man the sour look on his face the entire time he was standing in line sulking was over the top.
I did finish folding the laundry and I got nearly all of the Christmas cards addressed. That was a feat let me tell you. I lost the "current" address book. Found three blank ones that I had bought to get everything updated into and found our address book for 15 years ago. Needless to say I did a fair amount of googling last night to find addresses and there are a number that are waiting to see if they send us one so I will have their current address and can send one back to them.
Tonight- I really need to go to the gym and should work on wrapping some more presents. I have all the shopping done but I am waiting on half a dozen things to be shipped to me. Fingers crossed they show up soon.
Shitepile- Yeah, I've been actively ignoring this but I really should work on tackling that before the end of the year. We are unofficially closed from end of business on Friday the 20th to 8am January 6th. I have some work i'll need to come in and do but I can make my own schedule. That just means I'll have plenty of free time to clean up the shitepile and get to my 2013 goals.
Update- thanks to DH selling some items on eBay and shipping them out today I am now at 1967/2013. 46 more items to go. This is getting harder at the end. Hopefully they will get those stupid display cabinets out of my garage because I know there are some items lurking behind them that I can't get to.

Well, I have 4 weeks instead of 2 to complete my course.
Surgery will be in February now due to schedules.
Waiting for Dean's List confirmation.
Have to go to college and pick up accommodations letters and spring textbooks.
Getting stuff together for 2014 FAFSA and taxes.
Baking more cookies and pies.
Laundry almost caught up in washing and drying.
Dishes caught up.
Still going through tons of stuff here.

ETA2: For those last 3 finals, I think I'm just going to put them in my handbag and do them "whenever". I should be able to do one at the orthodontist's office this evening, and another one on the train to and from work tomorrow.
Famous last words ... I still couldn't face them, so I didn't take them to the orthodontist. Maybe one on the train tomorrow?
I got my students' list of authorized absences and online learning marks today. So I dealt with the absences, and put the online learning marks into my spreadsheets. (If anybody wonders why they take attendance in college here, school policy is that if you miss an important exam / presentation, and you have a valid reason, you get an "authorized absence" for that mark. If you don't, you get a zero. The students are allowed to miss class occasionally, but not exams / presentations unless they have a valid reason.)
Now ALL I have to do are those last 3 finals, and everybody's participation mark. I HATE doing those because I have so many students this year, I am having trouble with names. I do have photos, but many of them look nothing like they did when these photos were taken, two or three years ago.
I also got my schedule for next semester. I am VERY happy with it! I am SO lucky with my scheduler (who is also one of my Admin Students). There is just one problem, a Monday with six classes in a row, the Monday after the play (which has 5 performances over the weekend, including one on Sun night). I'm going into school tomorrow, so I'll ask if she can do anything about it. I bought her a box of her favorite cookies for Christmas.
I also got the schedule from that extra course I'm doing, elsewhere. I wanted to cry (yes I cry easily lol). I will have 3 12 or 13 hour days that week. I will NOT be doing that again next year. You may remember that I got out of the April week, but agreed to keep the February week. I REALLY regret it now.
The good news is ... (almost) no more orthodontist! DS3 has gutters (?) he has to wear for the next two years, but now the appointments are every three months instead of every month. But the best news is, there is no younger kid to follow!!! I have been going to that orthodontist for 15 or 16 years, since DS1 (now 27) was 11 or 12. EVERY time one of the kids got their braces removed, I'd have the younger sibling in at the same time, and we'd start all over again.

Rant: I am so tired of businesses being horrible and not understanding why people get mad at them! Case and point... today after months (years?) of procrastination I took in about 30 items for consignment. Now, this store is SO picky you have to iron everything, put it on a hanger, come in between 12-4pm and let them inspect every item and take back the ones they reject. So I go in today and even though it says ON THE DOOR "consignment Monday-Saturday 12-4pm" they tell me it's now "Monday, Thursday, Saturday from 12-2pm". Well thank-you-very-much you idiots! Seriously? Now all of my clothes are going to be sitting in my car, wrinkled and smooshed until I can get back there on Saturday in a 2 hour window. ARG. What's more annoying is that they expected me to say "oh no problem! We're all good friends here so I'll just skip around happy that you made major changes and never notified anyone! Zippity-Doo-Dah!" We're not friends. You're a business. You're supposed to have your crap together. Don't be shocked when people who are not notified get annoyed with you when you make arbitrary changes to policies or hours! /end rant So... I didn't trade in my clothes today but at least they're out of the garage. I decided to go down and visit my grandma so now I need to pack up some clothes, will get the dogs to my parent's house and take with me enough offline work to fill a few days. I can go to Barnes & Noble to get online but I'm going to be mostly "offline" while I'm there.

Aw, sorry Smart. I had a similar issue when I wanted to take DS3's better items to the local consignment shop. They had apparently stopped taking children's clothes in the meantime, even though their website, and SIGN, said "children's clothes". So I feel your pain. That bag is still in the basement.

debt- I think I get unnecessarily riled up because my business is designed to help businesses not suck. I nearly cancelled my heater appt last week because their website header talks about the "benifits of clean air" - that just makes me cringe! I'm hoping to drop off these clothes on Saturday since I have a bunch of nice jackets, pants, vests, sweaters and shirts for winter and they only take seasonal items. I think it's easily $300-400 worth of items if I can just get them in the store! Also planning a "necessities only" diet for the rest of the year. So far the only things I'm allowing myself to buy are 1) dog food and 2) a box of nails. I need more stuff and projects like I need a whole in the head. Edited to Add:I got the wood stacked up both in the house and out front so I can continue staining it. Just did 5 more boards and now letting them dry Also labeled my organizer in the bedroom (holds hair ties, lotion, etc) and now I'm staring down a basket of laundry to fold. Painted the last bit of the baseboards in the bedroom and closet! Waiting for them to dry so I can touch up the wall paint and then I'm d.o.n.e.! Sigh... is there a button where we can temporarily stop being adults?

Start, please, don't cut off your nose to spite your face! DH (a graphic designer) would do that, he'd cancel appts I'd made because he didn't like the companies' websites. Then guess who would be left scrambling to find another?! I learned to tell him about work AFTER it was done. Because frankly, who cares if the plumber doesn't have a nice website?! Or if they use a "vulgar font"?! It doesn't mean he's not a good plumber!
But, I do know it's irritating, because it's a time suck, and it's "your thing", and you don't have a lot of time. In my experience, as infuriating as it is, it's probably less of a time suck to bite the bullet and just go back during their "new hours" than to find another place, probably further away.

Startsmart, I'd at least tell them on Saturday that their sign is wrong, & they need to correct it, because they came close to losing you as a customer.
I remember one bookstore I'd planned to take my Mom & Dad's books to was "out of business". Nothing on their website gave me a clue about THAT. I drove there, & found the sign on their door.
Well, the most productive thing I did today was get DD to the mall. She finished her Christmas shopping. We found one store that carried a whole bunch of "Dr. Who" items. Apparently, Dr. Who is BIG at the college campus, so DD got a couple of things there.
Mom's laundry got delivered, & Mom visited with DD, DS & I for awhile.

debthaven - no I wouldn't cancel the appointment over a bad website when it's the only or most convenient option but I also believe that good marketing and design is important. It's the professional face of a business and communicates so much! It was mostly annoying because my family started and sold the business so if it still belonged to my uncle I'd mock him mercilessly For the consignment I'll try to get in on Saturday, just to get the clothes out of my garage and car! I try to work locally when I'm buying/selling if I can, otherwise it's too much work to drive out of town to work with a shop.

Tonight was mostly productive! I got a few of the hard emails out of the way and I'll find out tomorrow if one of my clients is going to play by the rules or not. Still need to finish drying that last load of laundry and go through the Christmas boxes in the living room. Oh and I found my sunglasses! On the floor in the kitchen, naturally, but I thought they were lost for good. Trash went out today which was good, I forgot last week so it was overflowing!
Paint is going back in the garage, books are getting packed up tomorrow to send a final batch and I am refilling the tub for donations too!

So I did get my laundry done and cards addressed on Tuesday. Last night I finished wrapping everything that have so far. My shopping is technically done but I am waiting on a few deliveries from the UPS man. Hopefully this time he'll drop it off at my house and not the neighbors house. Thank god they were nice and gave me DS' new laptop instead of keeping it for themselves. They live a couple of doors down and I've never even met them before. Not impressed UPS man, not impressed. Total wrong house delivery. DH was standing in our driveway and watched the guy stop a few houses down and then drive past our house. He came in and said "Guess the Boy's laptop isn't coming today, UPS tracking must be wrong". A couple of hours later our doorbell rang and it was the neighbors with a couple of our packages. Grr.
fingers crossed that the rest of my packages get delivered to MY house and not the neighbor's house.

Plz can I get a sample?
LOL Rukh! It would be something italicized, pretending to be posh LOL. Not Helvetica, for sure.
I AM OFF FOR 2.5 WEEKS! I offered my Admin students classes next week but they are ALL off. YAY! Some are also off the following week. Two of them ARE around the following week, so I could go in on Thurs 2 January for 2 hours. But I may take that week off too. (I am only allowed 32h per school year with the Admin students, and of course, the two who are around that week are both up-to-date. The two who are behind are the ones taking both weeks off.) Given that the only two Admins that want class are both up-to-date, I wrote to them nicely and told them I have decided to take that week off too. Part of me feels guilty / like a slacker and part of me feels like I deserve it. But it's done now, it is what it is.
Tomorrow I'm planning on doing my participation marks (always a struggle for me). That will probably take me about 3h.
Then if I can face it I'll mark that last set of papers and do that spreadsheet (also about 2h). And if not, that class will wait (I have till 6 Jan.)
And the roofer is finally coming about a leaky gutter.
So come Sat, I will have just 3 days to shop for Xmas gifts for DH and kids! Gulp! Like I said, it's the only thing in my life I do at the very last minute.

I got to visit with some old friends today. It was time well spent.
I spent the evening helping DS study for a test, & driving DD to & from work. Now I'm trying to get the laundry caught up.
Tomorrow will be a full day. I'm bringing in bakery treats for the special ed dept. at DS's school. DD has to be to work before breakfast rush. And, DS has a therapy session after school. We've got sNOw headed here, but I'm hoping to have enough time to run over some clean clothes for Mom. We'll see...

Rumor has it we in the Pacific NorthWet might get a bit of snow by the morning. I wouldn't mind a little bit - just enough to put us two hours late for school.

Rumor has it we in the Pacific NorthWet might get a bit of snow by the morning. I wouldn't mind a little bit - just enough to put us two hours late for school. Noooooooo!!! I am going to Seattle on Sunday to spend Xmas with DS2 and his wife. DS1 and his wife will fly in from S'pore and I do not want to see snow while there . At the kids insistence we'll all be staying in their tiny 800 or so sq ft home - no hotels allowed - and I can just imagine the cabin fever that would result. In the meantime I am going to see my babies for a week

I did the participation marks and sent out 8/9 spreadsheets! DONE! And marked my 5 Admin exams (multiple choice, no essays!) So still just that last set of 3 exams to do. DONE! I've now done EVERYTHING for school. I need to sort some papers on my "teaching shelves", but I don't go back till 6 Jan, and second semester starts on 13 Jan, so I have plenty of time. ETA: DONE!
