I don't bother with those anymore. Their gifts have gotten more expensive and i would just fill them with stuff they didn't use anyway so i quit.

That stuff can add up pretty quick! If they use it, that is great, but my kids tend to just kind of toss that stuff aside.

My kids are 7 & 6 and I usually hit up the dollar bins at Target for stuff and then maybe Big Lots or The Dollar Store for candy. DD noticed last year that the candy was the same as the Dollar Store, so I may just do Big Lots this year since we haven't shopped there this month.

We do Stockings for St. Nicks. For my younger two, I raid the dollar spot at target. We'll do fun socks from there, but that's the only clothes my kids get for the holidays as gifts. I also knit, so St. Nick will bring a washcloth from time to time as well. I try to go for consumables other than candy.

They can use them to call you to bring some brewskis down to the basement when they move back in after college!

seriously? if my kids had that attitude they wouldn't find anything under the xmas tree. Why? They got their smart phones and are ecstatic. because they don't 'deserve' anything and - as cheesy as it may sound - they should be damn grateful for anything that they get. so what if you don't buy them a 'big money item'? does that mean the whole thing's a waste?

seriously? if my kids had that attitude they wouldn't find anything under the xmas tree. Why? They got their smart phones and are ecstatic. Because, you're saying they're only happy with big ticket items and don't appreciate the effort/thought that goes into gifts that might not cost a lot. That wouldn't fly with me. My 10 year old usually gets something pretty spendy every year, but he completely doesn't expect it. This year he asked me for this stupid $15 plant growing kit. That was his only request! LOL Meanwhile he's been saving his money all year for an Xbox and I've been intercepting all his attempts to buy one on his own because we got him one for Christmas. He'll flip, but he'll also be thrilled with his stocking and the 20 or 30 dollars worth of stuff in there....Tic Tacs, chapstick, small lego set....he loves it!

Even though it's a pain in the a$$ to find stuff to put in there that doesn't cost a lot, I love watching them pull out each thing. These days they pull out everything to get to their personalized ornament first.

I upgraded what I stock in stockings because my kids are young adults. That being said, as kids they got candy and small items. As adults they get floss toothpaste, tooth brushes, socks, underwear, beef jersey, gum, breath mints.

They should have "attitudes of gratitude"! Especially at this time of year.

No, that is the assumption you are making. If i want to buy them socks, toiletries, etc, i do so during the year when they need them. It has nothing to do with "appreciaton" or whatever. And, it saves me time as well. They get all new socks at the beginning of the school year. If they are happy with ONE gift, why is that wrong?

Well, the point is kinda of to get them what they want? And, i gave them the choice. ONE big ticket item or a bunch of little things. Their choice. They are happy, i am happy, what is the problem?

I think it was the way you said it. Had you said "the big ticket item is the one they get most excited over" people wouldn't have jumped to the conclusion that they seem entitled.

They should have "attitudes of gratitude"! Especially at this time of year. I am so proud of my kids. Birthdays or Christmas, no gifts get thrown aside with this look of disappointment on their face. They always show appreciation to the giver. You could give older son underwear and he'd tell you how much he loves the color and how he was running low and really needed them.

I don't see the issue in this. Next year, I've already told the kids that we'll buy the new Wii System that just came out and they can each pick out a game. That's IT for christmas, with the exception of our kids each getting an ornament. Whatever santa brings will be VERY small. My oldest (8) is SUPER excited. He's also happy giving up 4-$30 gifts and one $150 dollar gift in order to get a Wii. We've never had a gaming system in the house. DS got a 3DS for Christmas last year. My kids aren't entitled, spoiled brats. They know Jesus is the reason for the season. And we donate plenty throughout the year. I imagine we'll do the same when it comes time for the kids to have their own computer, and when we have to get a cell phone plan. (I don't want to send my oldest to college with a prepaid cell). I also don't buy my kids clothes for Christmas. There were Christmases growing up at home where I only got the clothes I needed because that's all my folks could afford. Call me petty, but it sucked. Sure, I knew to be grateful as a tween that we had food on the table and our health, and that I was getting *something* to unwrap for Christmas. I want my kids to grow up knowing that it's not a special treat that we fulfill their basic needs of food, clothing, and shelter. And, while we are a polite household using our please and thank yous, I would NEVER expect my kids to say "Thanks mom, for doing what you are SUPPOSED to do, by providing for my basic needs. You are AWESOME," and continue to go on about it for about 10 minutes.

I'm lucky that both my husband and his brother love to do stocking stuffers. Their mom never put anything in the stocking, so they started doing it for each other. For the boys, they get matchbox cars, football cards, the football helmets that are 50 cents at a vending machine - crap like that. Until last year, they put the same stuff in the girl's stocking too. I told them to stop - she clearly doesn't want it, and the thought says "I wasn't thinking about you at all." So, we buy pencils and those little notebooks, stickers, a couple of barretts or a scrunchy, nail polish. This year I will put some socks in there, because she wants to steal mine.
Sometimes we buy scratcher lottery tickets. Candy, nuts and fruit for Grandma and Grandpa (when they stayed with us.)

But, i would be much more excited and happy to get a Smartphone than a pack of socks or chapstick! Who wouldn't!!
