I have now substituted a carrot in the morning for my bag of cookies from the vending machine. As much as I try I don't really like peppers. They are ok cooked and in things in small amounts. I can even put a few in scrambled eggs, but it has to be a small amount and only one day of the week, two at the most.

TheOtherMe hope you got some answers from the gastro doctor today so that you can start feeling better. She thinks I had the flu bug that is running rampant here. Gave me ideas on how to start eating again. She has a problem understanding I am a vegetarian. She did advise me to not go near my dad for a couple more days as he is to fragile to have this. Thanks for caring.

LUNCH VEGGIES:
red pepper broccoli carrots green cabbage red cabbage green bell pepper celery radish jicama (raw/salad) ~ That's the last of my chopped salad from Trader Joe's. I am definitely going to get that again.
spinach mustard greens collard greens turnip greens shredded carrots (cooked) The shredded carrots definitely help offset some of the bitterness of the greens. I think I like this combination.
Plus 1/2 banana at breakfast.
Next two days are at the adoption center, so I expect my veggie intake will be less.
I saw a good recipe online for andouille sausage cabbage soup for the crockpot and I may try that for Sunday dinner. (Cabbage, carrots, celery, onions, garlic, and a few potatoes)

Theotherme, Did you get some veggie broth? Feel better soon. Have some veggie broth. Just have not had the courage to try it yet. Had bananas today, trying to keep potassium up. I'm not sick any longer, but I also do not feel the least big hungry. I'm scared I am going to end back in the hospital for dehydration

Congrats Sharon! One of my co-workers is becoming a Grandma this spring, and she's super excited, too. Good for your daughter on not planning to tell the rest of the family for a bit, though. Sadly, miscarriage is more common then most people want to talk about, and I remember how devastating it was for my BFF when she told everyone she was pregnant pretty much as soon as she found out, and then had to tell them she miscarried. Her oldest boy was her 3rd for 4th pregnancy. Not that I'm trying to jinx anything. Just that I've seen the emotional effects of not waiting to tell, so she's making smart decisions from the beginning.
TheOtherMe - Okay, I know I live in the "crunchy" PNW, but if your doctor is having a hard time understanding you're a vegetarian, a part of me says find another doctor. That is not an uncommon dietary choice, and it's incredibly easy to still get all the nutrients you need - including protein - on a vegetarian diet. If you have a long standing relationship with this doctor, or don't want to find another doctor for other reasons, maybe ask for a referral to a nutritionist/dietitian, who can help you make a meal plan that meets your needs and fits your dietary restrictions. Is it the sodium in the veggie broth that's making it not sound appealing? If you're able to eat fruits, would maybe getting some yogurt and mixing your fruit into that would work? You could make a smoothie, if drinking seems better than eating. Other suggestions might be to cut your banana up in some oatmeal, try some rice crackers (which I've found to be easier on the stomach than soda crackers), or look and see if your grocery store carries the small drinkable yogurts. If you're worried about dehydration, obviously get some water into you, but at this point, gatorade (or similar) might be a good idea, too. Pedialyte/Pediasure (yes they're for kids but...) can be a good way to get nutrients into your body in small enough amounts that your stomach won't rebel. They also tend to be good for dehydration. There are also similar items geared toward diabetics.

LUNCH VEGGIES:
Zucchini roasted red pepper green onions (cooked)
romaine carrots artichoke hearts tomatoes white beans whatever is in falafel, LOL
Lunch today was from the Whole Foods salad bar. I tried to get some things I don't ordinarily eat at home. I think I did decently, veggie-wise. I added some chicken to the cooked veggies and some sesame tofu to the salad.

My veggies tonight were Olives and Mushrooms on top of tomato sauce. There may have been some cheese and pizza crust involved too. TheOtherMe are you feeling better and able to eat some? Tomorrow we are expecting 1-3" of snow to be followed by 1/2" of ice. I plan on staying inside the entire day if not the entire weekend.

There are also similar items geared toward diabetics.I now have a referral to a dietician/nutritionist but appointment is not until February 17. We have a shortage of gastro doctors here. Clinic has been looking for 2 years not to get another and so far, no new gastro. One who did my colonoscopy has told them he is retiring in 2 years. So not many choices on the gastro end. Didn't like the gastro from other hospital at all. He was a very rude man. I am seeing a nurse practitioner and she does not get being a vegetarian at all. Yesterday I was still nauseous. Not so today. Definitely the sodium in the veggie broth is a problem. I'm dying of thirst. I haven't been out so don't have anything other than what I already have. No way of making a smoothie as I don't own a blender. I have been a vegetarian for 15 years so I know how to get protein in me, once I get over this and the fear of getting so sick again. I will tell you all my secret. Last time I was this kind of sick for 72 hours was when I was a teenager. What I did then was stop eating and I became anorexic. No good treatments in the 60's and that is my fear. I have a "nurse navigator" since my hospital stay because I am on Medicare. She gets me being a vegetarian and we had a long talk today about my fears. Going to contact her on Monday to see if she can get me in to see nutritionist sooner. My family practitioner understands vegetarians. It's the nurse practitioner who doesn't. She is very young and acts like I am from another planet. Another problem I have is finding gluten free healthy food. No Whole Foods or Trader Joes close by. Need to find out where one is and take a trip. Store where I take my dad has very little I can eat. Bigger store in town has a very limited natural foods section. I'm lactose intolerant so yogurt is not a good idea unless I can find some lactose free yogurt which I'm told exists. Can't have soy either as I'm going on a FODMAP elimination diet. Soy is a big trigger. Today I've had bananas and veggie broth and a lot more water because the sodium made me so thirsty. Yes, I need to get some Pedialyte and get myself to town. I told gastro nurse that eggs and cheese have protein. Both are on the elimination diet. She acted like I must eat meat. She doesn't get that meat made me sick 15 years ago and that is why I stopped eating it. That was after I had almost half my colon removed. My then doctor and I introduced foods slowly and found I can't handle meat. He thought it was because of the short colon. Thank you all for caring. I will get myself to the other grocery store and get some different food. If I am the one taking dad to lunch tomorrow, there is a drug store in that little town and they should have Pedialyte.

TheOtherMe - Sorry you're having such a hard time of it. One of our best friends has Celiac's, is lactose intolerant, and can't eat red meat. She also has a freaky high metabolism (her goal is something like 400g of protein a day). I've gotten pretty good a feeding her, but we live in the PNW, so every grocery store has a gluten free section. Maybe try ordering some stuff from Amazon. They have the gluten free pasta we use most (Ancient Harvest). Her partner mostly searches for vegan recipes and then makes gluten free substitutions as needed.

Don't know if you'll find it where you are, but there's also almond based yogurt and coconut milk based yogurt. Both are found in my grocery stores. I avoid milk to stay well, so even a lactose free yogurt isn't good enough for me. Milk based yogurts have the best protein profile followed by soy. The almond ones and I think coconut too are pretty low in protein just as FYI.

TheOtherme,
Have you tried apple juice? When I am dehydrated some diluted apple juice helps. If you are still nauseous, add a pinch of ginger.
Consider ordering some soup through Amazon. It may sound strange, but when I am struggling with nausea,I often eat squash soup with a pinch of curry powder.

Went and got Pedialyte this morning. I bought 2 litres. Directions say one litre a day so I'm set for the weekend.
I don't have any apple juice on hand and I'm not sure it's on the LOWFOD map diet. Apples are high in fructose and I know they are not.
I was looking online at the one grocery store that has a health food section. They have a lot more choices than I thought. Rice crackers, rice macaroni and cheese, etc. as well as Almond milk.
As I start to feel better, I'm going to get a grocery list ready as I have a different type of doctor's appointment on Tuesday.
I also bought eggs this morning. They just sound good.
Need some sleep as I was up too late researching food and diet.
Closest Whole Foods is over 3 hours away and closest Trader Joe's is about 2 hours away.
I'm aware I can order food from Amazon, but I want to check out the local store first--with a list.

LUNCH VEGGIES
broccoli carrots green cabbage red cabbage green bell pepper celery radish jicama orange pepper garbanzo beans mushrooms (salad)
carrots spinach mustard greens collard greens turnip greens (cooked)
And 1/2 a banana with breakfast.
I've got a soup in the crockpot: cabbage, celery, onions, carrots, a few baby potatoes, garlic, sun dried tomato flakes, chicken broth and andouille sausage. It smells heavenly. I think I'll have it with toast. YUM! I found the recipe online, and tweaked it a bit.... added a lot more onion and celery than it called for, but put in less cabbage. It called for some fennel (don't have any), but added some sundried tomato flakes and some red pepper flakes for some zip. It called for a bit of apple cider vinegar (didn't have that) so I used a splash of salad vinegar. It smells heavenly!
Filled bird feeders today ... we're currently in between rain storms and it's 69 degrees outside. I've got the windows open. Planning to watch the Golden Globes tonight.
Did I mention we adopted out 7 kittens yesterday at the Adoption Center? Lots of work. but lots of cuteness. Three families took a PAIR of kittens .... which is always nice.

Checking in. Feeling better today. Pedialyte was a fantastic suggestion.
Also took dad to lunch today and had 3/4 of a grilled cheese and some french fries at Dairy Queen. I have to get the kids meal there to have anything I can eat so the french fries are not as large of an order as the regular fries. Wasn't sure how this food would work so I didn't eat all of it. It has been fine so far.
Watching my basketball team now and when it's over, time for another egg.
Need to get a grocery list made so I can go to town tomorrow. It's supposed to snow Tuesday so I'm not sure I will get there for my doctor's appointment. Definitely need more variety of food in this house for next week.

I twice adopted pairs of kittens from the Boulder Humane Society. First set were not siblings, but second pair were siblings.
I have yet to figure out how the Humane Society told me I had adopted two females when it took me about an hour after I got them home to figure out that one was definitely a male. That humane society gave you a coupon for a vet check up and it was confirmed, like it needed confirmed. I could have returned Sir Abbey, but we had bonded in those 48 hours and he was mine.
This pair of kittens had a very rough start in life. Their litter was found in a dumpster so they had been fostered. Great foster mom made for great kittens. Abbey was always afraid of other people, but he loved me. He had a UTI and when the x-ray was done, it showed he had a bb stuck inside of him. No wonder he found it hard to trust. Not only had he been dumped, somebody had shot him with a bb gun and probably thought he would die.
When I would leave them with a pet sitter, they never saw Abbey. Food would disappear and box needed cleaning. Pet sitters said it was too much in box for one cat so they didn't worry he wasn't eating.
I miss those two. Sadly, the UTI proved to be too much for Abbey. Then his beautiful sister Paulie got sick a few years later with an illness she could not overcome.

No kittens ever again. Bitchy and Bitchier. I love them but they are so not people persons. They were kennel mates at the shelter and I did not want to break them up. They were my birthday present to myself that year. Should have gotten the case of wine. Friendlier and cheaper.

Glad you're feeling better Theotherme.
I took a nasty spill on the ice yesterday so I'm going to get my foot checked out. We're not supposed to get that much ice in Florida?
