I think I've run out of things I feel like decluttering, lol. Which doesn't mean that I'm done with ACTUAL decluttering! Maybe I will take a short break.

Thanks all. As ofyesterday Dad is MUCH better. Heactually communicated w/my brother last eve. He was still mumbling for me. Asmy brother said: Dad has fooled us a fewtimes now. I believe I've told you all a few times, but just in case, I hate cold weather ![](http://images.proboards.com/new/sad.png) . I'm over it and it's only been a few days. I feel like one large piece of sandpaper. We had a little more snow tonight, but when I got home it was almost more like little sleet balls. The pup and I are going to see DS tomorrow. Can't wait to put my arms around him and give him a big hug. I'm not even going to think about taxes until April. They are talking about maybe up to 22 furlough days. I've heard it would start in the middle of April, then I've also heard mid May. And that goes through the end of September. The longer it's put off the more days in a row we would have to take. Need to start saving the pennies.

I'm just waiting for the W-2 for $500 and January 30 to file my return. I'm another one who really, really dislikes cold weather. So why am I living in Iowa? I ask myself that question often. ![](http://images.proboards.com/new/smiley.png) Parents' house was shown twice yesterday and it "wore" mom out. They just sit there. Second people were a young couple with a child and were in the house over 30 minutes and then in the garage a long time after that. The garage is the only place they can talk to their realtor without mom and dad hearing them. Mom is worried because another house on their street went on the market this week. Can't worry about that. The houses are not from the same era and not similar in style. Have no idea what the price is so they may not even be the same people looking at the house. DN, where I babysit, had her neighbor's house broken in to on Wednesday. The burglar broke the kitchen window over the sink and crawled through to get in. He did lock the door between house and garage. DN's hubby had been out shoveling her snow and thought he heard a noise, but it stopped. Now he wishes he had investigated. Screens from the next house had been removed so was probably going to attempt to get in that one also. Neighbor's house was in shambles. Took laptop, camera, legos, etc. Legos confused me. She had all of her pictures of her son on the computer. She had removed them all from the cards, so they are gone. Her son was to spend the night with his dad. She called to tell him and he wanted to take care of mom, so he and her ex came to stay with her. She also had a friend's dog loaned to her. I feel safe in DN's house because their dog would take anybody who tried to get in she didn't know and she's big enough to do it. The teeth she shows at the kids when she wants them to leave her alone scare me but I know she is just giving them a warning to leave her be. A stranger would get no warning. She'd pounce and bite. She would have started barking at the first noise. I always her her barking when I pull in the driveway, but it stops once she realizes who it is. I've been in that woman's shoes. It is so violating.

Residential burglaries are a huge violation that, frankly, scare the heck out of me. I suppose I think it about it a lot since we live in a high crime city and my wonderful DH is gone so much. But I'm also home most of the time, and always have multiple ways out of my house. My biggest fear is that the cats would get injured or let loose and lost.... I have insurance for theft, of course.
We actually went out to dinner tonight to a local Mediterranean restaurant. I had the fatoush salad (lettuce, tomato, cucumber, peppers in a lemon/vinegar/oil dressing), the garlic shrimp (heavenly), grilled veggies (very nice) and the wheat bulgur pilaf (yum yum!) My wonderful DH had the soup (chicken noodle, broth was excellent) and the rib-eye steak (he shared some, wonderful!). It was nice.
The construction for the Adoption Center (within the store) that Petco is building for us is coming along. We went there tonight along with my friend Tammy/her husband (she's the #2 lady at the rescue and my "supervisor") to do some measuring and planning for furniture, etc. We discovered that there are NO power outlets in the lobby ... which is a problem ... so we're hoping we can get that fixed before they sign off on the construction.
Saturday tomorrow ... so I'll be at Petco 10-3, as usual. I hope we have some adoptions. (We're still working with cats in carriers/cages and setting up folding tables for Saturday adoptions ... but we're hoping this will be our LAST Saturday doing that!)
My wonderful DH leaves Wed Jan 30 for Texas, returning Saturday Feb 16.... so, 18 days gone this time. As silly as it sounds, I miss him already.

We finally got real snow on Fri - about 1 inch. It was about 330 days since the last snow of any consequence (1"). Both my N & S neighbors shoveled before I went out so I didn't need to do so.
We are forecast for more snow on Sun, followed by sleet, rain & Mon temps over 40.

We got about 3 inches of snow. The greasy kind. I swept the car last night because I know that kind of snow will turn to ice if it sits on the car. i don't have a shovel or any other snow gear for cleanup. DD1 and DH are going out for a couple hours on a date tonight. I get the kids. I know I'll be playing Monopoly tonight. Believe it or not, the 10 year old normally wins. If I beat him, it will be note worthy. I have a 'hankering' for tuna noodle cassarole. So I'm thinking dinner will be yummy. Other than that, Marley and I will be checking out snow flakes from the living room. ![](http://images.proboards.com/new/shocked.gif)

Today is bridal show day with DD. Hopefully it will be fun and not just too hot and crowded. I was going to make a chicken stew for tonight but DD was questioning whether it really needed mushrooms. ![](http://images.proboards.com/new/wink.png) I think I will save the chicken stew for tomorrow and take it over and share with my Mom. Tonight will be ravioli's. We buy the ravioli's in the refrigerated deli case and then add some of my homemade spaghetti sauce. I will send the rest back to school with her.

When I was burglarized back in the 90's, my wonderful Benjamin cat tried to protect the household. At least that is what I decided because he was shut in a bathroom. He was a very talkative cat and I can imagine him howling at the guy.
The guy got in my house by removing the pet door I had installed on the patio door. There was no damage to my home and I didn't want to put in a new pet door. The Victim's Assistance fund had me provide the receipt and reimbursed me the cost. I was told I didn't have to buy a new as they understood why I didn't want to replace it. I put in an alarm system so it was used to protect me. The cost of the pet door was less than my insurance deductible also.
The worst part of a home burglary is the violation. This state has such a meth problem that it's usually assumed it's related to that drug.

My tax return is finished--just waiting on the W-2 from that crappy job and the 1099 for the computer I won so I can file it. I need the EIN for the 1099 from Staples.
We have an ice storm watch until 9 PM tomorrow. I'd rather have snow than ice. I will be staying in tomorrow and hope the roads are clear by Monday.

One 1 kitten adoption today, which is a bit disappointing.
Despite our forecasts, we haven't really gotten rain.

If I find a brand that is sugar free, would you like for me to pm it to you? I bought some Oak Farms Dairy pops. They are less expensive but taste better.

Good evening all! I got to see DS this weekend. The pup and I went up yesterday and he was able to stay out til 1, so he was with us for several hours. I am so glad I got to see him. We watched some chick flicks ![](http://images.proboards.com/new/grin.png) balanced out with sports shows. Had Dominoes deliver (they have a gf pizza that is pretty good!). Saw him for about an hour this morning before we had to hit the road. My niece was coming to visit, so I had to get on down the road. Went to Aldi, and spent about $58. Part of that was a new small electric dicer. The one I have the ex #1 and I got for a wedding gift in 1986. I think it's time to replace. The plastic on the old one was really starting to chip. The pup got to go on a play date with one of my besties. Since she lives in town I dropped him off so I could meet my niece and my folks for lunch. He had a great time, but is tuckered out ![](http://images.proboards.com/new/tongue.png) . She has two dogs - the most laid back yellow lab and a little rescue chorkie (chihauhau/yorkie). It was so funny to watch my guy - he acts just like an only child - her two were messing with each other, and he just stood there and watched and wasn't sure how to interact! We still have snow on the ground since we have so many trees. I hear we might have ice tonight. We'll see. The weather people have been pretty much 100% wrong lately. I hate to hear of someone's house being broken into. My mom is a very beautiful woman. When I was growing up, every time my dad was away, we would have obscene phone callers and peeping toms. It was pretty hideous. Bad memories. I don't know how much help the pup would be if I wasn't home, but he would definitely raise the roof barking if I was home. Reminds me - go set alarm.

Did you set your alarm?
Speaking of alarms, we have four bedrooms in our home. Which means we have to purchase 4 carbon monoxide alarms ~ one for outside of every bedroom ~ from what the regulations say. (This is so we can list/sell our house ... not right away.) Our hallway is going to look ridiculous, lol! Thanks goodness we can still get battery ones ... new home construction needs to have hardwired alarms AND fire sprinklers.
(We do have one in the hallway right now, which covers three of the bedrooms and the laundry room), and then one in the kitchen/pantry area.) AND a fire extinguisher.

We got an ice storm today. My south facing windows and deck are covered in ice. It had melted on the windows but froze when the temperature started dropping. Glad I don't have to go anywhere tomorrow. Pastor decided to postpone the newsletter until next week since church was canceled. My DS said when they were called, they were asked to mail in their commitment cards. I'm so glad I didn't send those letters out as there was nothing enclosed in letter DS received. They mailed the letters last Tuesday, which was kind of late for a Sunday service.
Talked to mom last night. I wish I could get through to her that they need to leave when the house is being shown. I so want to call the realtor, but I don't know if I can trust him not to tell them I called. DS and I talked and if the one bedroom apartment is in danger of being sold, we will have to force dad to take a short term loan from BIL so they don't lose it. Mom is concerned that it will deplete the checking account. She said she doesn't like it to go below $80,000. I was like what? When you sell the house, it will go back up. Plus they have CDs for five years at age 89 and IRAs that they won't cash in to do this. She says she can't afford a new washer and dryer and she's leaving the ones that are in the house now. So buying a washer/dryer might make take checking to $79,000. Oh, no! Like my DS said, all they see is they don't save a lot any more because they don't have the kind of income they had when they were working.
They are getting two chairs they bought replaced. The fabric was defective and looked like they were 10 years old after 2 months. She made sure she didn't get that fabric again and the new chairs are to be delivered on Thursday.

Silly me, my checking account has fallen below $80,000. (smile) OK, sorry to tease a bit ... dealing with aging parents can be a challenge, I'm sure. Hang in there ... you are doing a great job keeping them on track!
Doing laundry here, woo hoo.

My Dad's health issues upon hospital admission have all much improved. The p[roblem right now is his diabetes is totally out of any kind of control w/VERY high sugar readings. NOTE: I am very aware that this is often the sign of an undiagnosed infection. Been there, done that w/late DH. We had the snow/sleet/rain here overnight. Temps have been rising. It is already 46 which is about the predictedhigh for today and it is still dark out.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /> Plan to keep an eye on the weather to decide what I will dotoday. I was going to go do a massive amount of laundry today. I have to drive 25 miles to find clean water. I think I may just do a little of it in the next little community, and skip the major until next week.

GRIT: Is there a problem with clean water where you live? Are you in the USA? I talked to a friend this morning. Her dad is ill and she is concerned about the problems he's having. Perhaps (for those of you who do) prayers would be a welcomed thing. I'll thank you ahead of time for your prayers. I'll be going out tonight with a friend as long as the roads are clear. Niether of us care to navigate icy roads. The 3" of snow we got Friday has half disappeared. It's unusual for snow to stick around for that long here. Normally there's a dusting and it's gone the next morning. I found my recipe for coffee cake and will be making it today. I'm going through a change with my eating. I think for the first time I'm able to choose what I like, not what everyone else likes. I like simple foods. This much I figured out. There's not many things I want, so I am learning that it's OK to stick with things I like. For instance: I like cukes and tomatoes. They don't have to be prepared fancy. I make a simple dressing with mayo and ketchup and eat them with that. Even though everyone around me goes "EWWW" when I put vinegar on spinach, it's OK that I like it. I guess old habits are hard to break. I cooked for so many years for everyone else, that it's taken me a while to explore this area. Also, I have made 2 goals for this year. One is to share what's in my heart. Not doing so great there. I tried on a thread, but backed out because I felt naked. The other is to tell the people I love or like that they have made an impact on my life. I'm doing much better in this area. So I'd like to take this opportunity to say how much I appreciate the regular posters on this thread. Without realizing it, you have helped to keep me moving forward in my walk. I appreciate (and welcome) the interactions and have come to think of you as friends. IGGY and MONICALEE are my cyber daughters, MOLLY is my sunshine, and SHARON, MOTHER, MARV and THEO are my friends in crime. Also a formal welcome to GRIT. ![](http://images.proboards.com/new/smiley.png) Stay safe and enjoy the day.

![](http://images.proboards.com/new/grin.png) We are actually enjoying some sunshine here today, and low to mid 50s. Once my wonderful DH left for work and his Explorer was out of the garage, I got some things put away and rearranged and decluttered out there ... now I've got another plastic bin for the thrift shop. Then I ventured out front and filled bird feeders and the bird bath, changed the front door wreath from winter to red/pink roses for Valentine's/Spring, and scrubbed the bird poo off the sidewalk with the hose and a push broom. I also did some watering. For Valentine's Day, I told my wonderful DH that I'd like a new wallet (old one is 5 years old and a bit ... past its prime), so now I'm looking online for just the right one. I've found 2 on Amazon that would do, but I want to check Overstock and Target, too. I was thinking bright/cheery, but not too flashy. Anyway, that's my current shopping quest. My wonderful DH leaves Wednesday morning on the 6am flight to Dallas. He'll be back Saturday Night, Feb 16. (sigh)

aaaawww, Dutt, we all love you too ![](http://syonidv.hodginsmedia.com/vsmileys/rose.gif) . You are such a strong and caring woman. I admire all that you have come through in the last few years. Molly, at least you are allowed to know the exact date your DH will be home this time. Sorry he won't be home for Valentines day. Holly, just curious, how come you have so many weird little symbols and stuff onyour posts? I know it has something to do with the changeover, just curious what they mean. Theo, I wish I had the problem of letting my account go under $80K ![](http://images.proboards.com/new/tongue.png) . Sounds like they were great savers in their day! It was a little icy here this morning, but nothing dangerous. DC Feds had a really late arrival today, but we were on time. Still super busy at work, but things are starting to shake loose where I can start getting some of it cleared off my desk in the next week or two. I need to check Orland's weather for this coming weekend. DD and I are headed for the yellow ribbon program for soon to deploy soldiers. I think I'm still blocking out the fact that she has graduated from college and will soon who knows how many miles away from home. Sigh.... Dutt, prayers are out for your friend. I'll be logging off in a minute. I'm trying to get off the computer an hour or two before bedtime. I keep reading it's hard on sleep patterns. Also, I just got my book for the book club thread, so I want to turn on the electric blanket and start working through the first chapter. But I have to put the sheets back on my bed and mke it up first. Night all!!!

The bridal show was fun and well worth the price of admission. DD won a great deal on tuxedo's. $50 off each tuxedo rental and if 5 are rented then the groom gets his free. She will also get $50 off wedding gown preservation.
I am pretty sure we found our cake lady. Her cakes were beautiful and delicious and she delivers.
DD and I really had a fun today together and that was the best thing of all. I am heading to bed early tonight so I can be into work by 5am. That way all the morning work will be done before my meeting with the CPA at 8:30 for my taxes.

Yes, my parents were great savers. They say they didn't have a penny saved when we graduated high school. My dad's boss also retired about the same time and his new boss actually gave raises. The house would have been paid off in 1990. They were paying $60 per month for their house payment. However, that did not include insurance and taxes.
They were very conservative and didn't invest. As soon as my dad's Firestone stock was vested, he sold it. Their money has always been in checking, savings, CDs and IRAs. Every time I mention to mom they shouldn't be renewing any more 5 year CDs, she starts carrying on about the interest rates are so late if you don't go 5 years. Mom, you are 89. Will you still be here in 5 years?
Everybody I've told about the $80k has gotten a kick out of it.
Schools around here were closed today because of ice. By noon, they could have opened, but fog had set in. They will be delayed or closed tomorrow also. I've been checking the local airport just because and most flights were canceled. Those that did leave were over 5 hours delayed.
It's supposed to rain tomorrow. Crazy weather.

I do indeed live in the USA, and the city water is hard, and has iron in it. It will turn your whites brown. Blech

We bought a new laser pointer toy for the cats today for $6.
So much for my "no recreational spending in January," huh? ![](http://images.proboards.com/new/shocked.gif)
