When I got my paper this morning, my next door neighbor's house is for sale. These are the people who take care of my lawn and snow. Found the ad on Craig's List and it's way overpriced. I know what my house appraised at and they are listing for $20K over that. I have a fireplace for which $5K was added on the appraisal. They have nothing finished in the basement, but do have landscaping that is beautiful. One tree needs to come out because eventually it will grow in to both of our foundations. They say in the ad that they both grew up in the country and now that they have a baby, they want to raise their family in the country. I will miss them.

Had to post.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

I’m going to be a granny again. DD2 is preggie & due in June!!! NOTE: HIGH probability of her being early as she was 1 month early last time.
No idea (yet) if it will be a matched set (another boy) or a complete set (a girl) this time. Either way there are PLENTY of hand me downs as DD1 has a boy and 2 girls as well as DD2 already having a boy. Should know more after her Feb Dr. appt.

I also suspect they will be house hunting real soon as her DH needs a home office & their current place is 3 bedrooms and NO basement.
I am also having 'issues' w/the quick reply button.

Testing yet again. First test I used the 'quick reply' button. The second I used the 'reply' button. Now I'm testing the 'quote' button. Where the hey is spell check? Am I missing something? I'm a horrible speller. I guess the karma is gone too? Posting is very slow. Is anyone else having these problems?

Theo, hope the house sells quickly! Most people take weeks/months getting their house ready to sell. Good deal for you guys! Holly - congratulations , how exciting for all of you. I hope to not have a grandchild for a few more years yet. DD says absolutely NOT and DS has 1 1/2 more years of college. He cannot attend his college if he has a wife or child. They feel that if you have one or the other or both, you have priorities at home and need to be there to take care of your responsibilities. Both kids seem to have relationship issues, which seems to come from things they dealt with on their father's side after we split. I didn't know about any of it until recently. Sad. Molly, I feel for you. I can't tell you how many time I have typed a nice little post just to lose it right before I finished. I usually just give it up and don't retype it. Which is why sometimes I don't check in for a few days. Day 2 of retirement class. Yesterday I was so excited, today I was very depressed. First day is all about your bennies, day 2 is about how much is enough to retire on, can you retire when you want, etc. I think pretty much everyone is scared they will outlive their retirement income. Scary business. Tomorrow is estate planning. I hope we get it in, because we are supposed to get our first snow of the season (other than a couple of flurries before). DD and I finally had a conversation about her teeth being pulled on Monday. Not sure how she didn't understand that they were actually going to get pulled on Monday and that it wasn't just a consultation. I explicitly wrote it in an email and asked her in two text messages if she was sure she was going to do it on Monday (she's flying to Texas on Friday). So now she's trying to put it on me like it is my fault she didn't understand the difference. Had to cut that conversation short. I've been trying to get her to do it for a year, and now she's up against the wall. It's no longer my problem

BTW - how did you all get to keep or change your avatar? I tried to create a cute girl that looked remarkably like me but it's not showing up. I'd really rather have a pic of the pup downloaded, but was never successful with that on the old board. HELP!

From talking to mom, I think these might have been looky loos. They told mom they were 70 and the house has always looked so pretty when they drove by. There are four steps from the main living level to the bedroom/bathroom level and the woman asked if that was why they were leaving. Mom told her no, it was to be closer to family.
The husband sent the home tour talking to Dad. He knew immediately who he was and all about dad's brothers. Exactly the reason the homeowner should not be present when the house is shown.

Wed was a good news/bad news day. I already posted the good news.
The bad – my Dad is in the hospital. No, NOT the flu. Dr says most likely pneumonia. This is the first time in about 15-18 months he has been hospitalized. I figure they will keep him 3-5 days to be sure the treatment is working and then back into a rehab place.
I will go back to my usual routine of visiting every other day, bringing my lunch & eating w/him. I KNOW the rehab place has a microwave I can use to reheat leftovers. The hospital does too but do NOT allow outsiders to use it.
Actually this sort of works out well. I have 2 places to go this month that are convenient to get to from either the hospital or rehab place (monthly Goodwill trip + close 2 CDs). However, I would rather have just racked up a few extra miles than he be hospitalized.
To everyone w/eaten posts: I am in the habit of keeping word or notepad open, writing as I go and just doing a copy& paste. Then if there are ‘issues’ I still have my original.

Now I know what notepad is used for. Thanks MARV. I hope your dad gets well soon and is dancing with the stars. We're expecting a snow storm according to the news. A friend is picking me up to show me Cosco. I guess there's one near me. I covered my pots just in case. I don't want to loose the foods I have planted. I finished some legal papers yesterday and had planned to get them notorized today, but tomorrow is soon enough. I hate snow these days. It's hard to believe I drove 25 each way to work for years in storms. PS Where oh where is my spell check feature? Stay safe and enjoy the day.

My understanding is that there's no more Karma, but you can now LIKE an individual post (just like on Facebook.)
I will ask about Spell check.
My old avatar (cute kitty photo) came over, but since we can now have slightly bigger avatars, I went ahead and replaced it with a larger picture (same kitty.) To upload an avatar, go to your Profile, hit edit profile, and then either choose a ProBoards avatar, upload a photo, or custom make one.
Our painter had heart surgery today (stints following angioplasty), so things are rescheduled for Feb 19.
Looks like my wonderful DH will leave for Texas for 3 weeks on Jan 30. He'll come home for 2 weeks, and then return to Texas for three more weeks. I wonder if he'll be around for my birthday? He will miss Valentines Day. Hope he doesn't miss our 10 year anniversary in April.
Looks like my wonderful DH's military job ends here with the fiscal year (Sep 30) and he'll have to find another military job somewhere to get him to his 20 year retirement eligible date of Aug 1, 2014. Crap on a c.racke.r ... just 10 more months? They couldn't keep him employed here for 10 more months!?!? Sheesh.

Holly, sorry to hear about your father. Hopefully he's up and out of there soon. Dutt, have you gotten any snow there? We were supposed to get 4-6 inches, but I think all that has changed now. Oh well. Tomorrow is Friday! Molly, does your dh's end date have anything to do with the reductions the military is supposed to take? They are talking preliminarily about furloughs at work right now. Apparently if there will be some sort of furlough, they are leaving it up to the individual agency's on how they want to implement - either one lump some of days, or do a day here or there. I've also heard they are working on drills about what will happen at each place if there is a 30% reductions. What won't get done, and what the impact will be if that work doesn't get done. Scary business. I need to start tightening the money pouches. A day here or there wouldn't be as bad as several days in one payday. Last day of retirement class was about estate planning. I was expecting a dry session because it was being given by a lawyer (sorry Molly ) but he was a hoot! This entire class really had me rethinking alot of things. Not that what I was planning was necessarily wrong, but that I need to give some things a little more thought. I also need to look through all my paperwork of goodies to make sure I have everything covered. It also makes me a little angry that as an employee I didn't have access to this information about 20 years ago, when some things could have had a more meaningful impact on my career and retirement. I came back to work for a few hours and encouraged all the younguns to take the course for their retirement that is offered later this year. Probably will have a huge impact on them now rather than later.

Holly, I hope your father gets well soon. My mother still blames pneumonia that happened over 2 years ago for any day she doesn't feel up to par. She's 89. I'm guessing at that age you have days when you don't feel great. It's always the pneumonia.
mother, are you a federal employee? I hope they only do furloughs, although those will still be painful on the pocketbook, especially for the lower grades. State here already does furloughs--I think it's 20 days a month spread throughout the year.
Molly, is there any possibility hubby's job could be extended for 10 months? I know things keep changing in the military.

All things are possible with the military, that's for sure. My wonderful DH is much calmer about this situation that I am ... which is a nice counterbalance, I suppose. He is quite confident that he'll land "somewhere" and get to his "20 years" ... and is content to put out feelers and see what develops. Part of me thinks so, too ... but then I wonder what will happen AFTER THAT? He was rather hoping to hit his 20 and then stay in 6 more years (until he "ages out"), but who knows if that will pan out? In any event, while he is confident he will have a job at least through retirement eligibility, he's certain it won't be HERE.
So ... we're probably looking at living apart for at least 10 months (10/12 through 8/13) ... and possibly longer. (We're not selling our house and moving until he has a real, full-time, supposedly stable job somewhere!) Besides, waiting to sell can only help us with California's tanked real estate market.
Tax stuff went to the CPA's today. I know he can't efile until the end of the month, but at least it's done. The refund goes into savings.
I'm definitely into decluttering, live frugally, get house ready for selling mode, though ... now more than ever.

MOLLY: Lots of military opportunities here. We could go to the NEX together! LOL
DD3 and I went to WM today, then I took her out to lunch. That baby girl is so good. All she does is watch her brother's antics. I told DD he was definately one of us. He likes to talk. He's very good at it too. I'm the quiet one, all of our kids take after DH and his family. People love to pay attention to what they say.
DD2 son is going to a speech therapist. She told her DH that she'd take responsibility if he were going there because he talked too much, but he can't pin the glitch on our family. He reflected on that and agreed.
When the sun begins to recede, Marley starts paying attention to me. She gets all wiggley and excited because she wants to go cuddle in the bedroom. She's all cuddled in on her blanket watching Law and order.

Molly, sorry to hear about your dh. You are so right, everything is up in the air right now. Good think you all have been doing so many lovely updates lately. That will go a long way to making your house more appealing than others. Didn't you talk about him maybe having to finish out his career somewhere other than where you are currently (or maybe it was getting settled in a new place after his retirement). At least you all are used to him being gone. Not that that helps you much, but it isn't something new for you to also deal with. And, who knows, wherever he might have to finish out his career might be a good place for him to get his new career. Even though he's reserve, he does the military full time, right? What is he interested in doing after this career? So many people come out of the military with no real after military work skills. I think he has a lot going for him. Good luck. I know it will all work out. Theo, yes, I'm a fed. Next month is my 30th anniversary! Woohoo to me! Of course, I started in a special program that put toddlers to work

Theo, yes, I'm a fed. Next month is my 30th anniversary! Woohoo to me! Of course, I started in a special program that put toddlers to work I also started as a toddler. I was 17, fresh out of high school. They almost didn't hire me because I wasn't 18. I turned 18 17 days after the IRS hired me. So 17 days almost cost me a 25 year career. That was when I took the early out that I was offered. Congrats on 30 years. I have several friends who have 30 years in. Also some who are staying until they die at their desk. Those people I do not get. Mom and Dad's house is finally online. They didn't show a picture of the main bathroom. They showed a picture of the crappy basement bath. Going to tell mom to ask to have them change that when the realtors come through on Monday. At least put the main bath on the website. House looks good in the pictures. I have no idea if it's priced right. I just know mom thinks it's worth $20K more than it's listed for. Friend here is going to the same facility. Their house is now listed. Definitely overpriced. Sorry, cost of new furnace on a house built in 1905 is not going to be fully recovered at the sale when house looks horrible from the curb. No curb appeal whatsoever and totally cluttered in the pictures. At least sister was there and brought back everything realtor said to get out of there that looked like clutter. Now to convince them to leave when it's shown. My browser has spell check, but don't ask me what I did to get it.

I think my wonderful DH is open to a variety of potential career options once he's completely done with the military. He joined as a 17 year old high school senior, spent 8 years as a crew chief (aircraft mechanic), got his B.A. degree (Spanish, which included 1 year at the University of Madrid), then he was commissioned and sent to pilot training. He's been flying for the military ever since (2 different aircraft.) Though he's working to get his "active duty 20 years" in, he's actually been in longer, since he started part-time as a "traditional Guardsman." 11-5-13 will be 30 years in the Air National Guard. I could see him working for Border Patrol (flying surveillance) or Department of Interior (flying), Department of Homeland Security, etc. What he isn't particularly interested in is flying for the airlines since that would keep him away from home 21 days out of 30 (usually). That doesn't sound appealing to either of us. Or perhaps working for a Defense Contractor? Or something else completely. He will be 48 years old when he qualifies for a 20 year active duty retirement on 8-1-14. You are right, though. We knew a move was coming eventually. We just rather hoped that "eventually" would be 2020 and not 2014

Molly,
USAJobs.gov has a number of jobs that require a pilot"s license and National Guard membership.

Peace77, yes ... he knows about that website (I asked about it a while ago.) But apparently that's not how internal applying for military job hiring/transfers work (using that website.) According to my wonderful DH, 99 percent of those National Guard/military jobs are hired from within that own unit, but they are required to post those jobs for others to try to get.... so people spend dozens of hours filling out forms, applying, gathering documents, etc..... and the unit goes ahead and hires from within (like they were planning to do all along.) As with many industries, it's not what you know, it's WHO you know. (So he is trying direct networking, etc... which is how many guys get new jobs within the military.) He also noted that the National Guard jobs that are advertised are almost exclusively "Air Technician" jobs (civil service) with pay on the GS-scale, and my wonderful DH needs to be full-time, active duty (military pay scale/military pension) in order to qualify for retirement eligibility. A lot of active duty guys, AFTER they become retirement eligible and are otherwise "let go" from their full time active duty positions may choose to move somewhere no one wants to go (less competition) and then take one of those civil service/quasi-military jobs. Those civil service jobs can pay 25-35 percent less than active duty jobs, don't include military health care, don't qualify for military retirement, don't pay military flying bonuses ... but still require military membership. See what I mean about complicated? And military bureaucracies? But thanks for the suggestion.

Hello everyone. This has been a busy stressful week. Today is catch up day. I have been to a couple of stores this morning and actually have real food in the house again. Okay there has been food in the freezer but I have not been good about using my stockpile this week.
I had a major migraine yesterday and spent about 18 hours in bed. Fortunately I was able to sleep it off and feel pretty good today. Just a little bit of migraine hangover but not too bad and I am feeling better as the day goes on.
I did find out this week that my homeowners insurance covers my DD in her apt and that she will not need separate renters insurance. That will be an extra savings. The agent said this will work because of the insurance company I am with, apparently not all companies do this, and because she lives by herself.

Sharon, glad to hear your migraine is going away. I've never had one (where's my wood to knock on?), but I've had severe headaches (usually involves caffeine withdrawal ), but I know bad those hurt. Good break on the insurance! Molly, has your dh looked into Patuxent River Naval Air Base as a possibility for post retirement? They do alot of airplane "stuff" there. He might find something that would work for him. It's a nice area, and should feel like a LCOL for you after living in CA for so many years! Fingers crossed and prayers said that he can get something worked out to at least get his 20 in. I had late lunch with my folks today. It was nice to spend some time with them. Since we were in town, we hit Aldi. I have decided for 2013 I need to get my personal spending in check. 2012 was a bad spending year in so many respects. I told the ladies at work I wasn't buying any of their party stuff this coming year. Now, I just need to stick to my guns. Now that they are talking possible furlough days, I really need to stick to "the plan". So, I spent $36 at Aldi. That should get me through the next week. I've told you all about the retirement class I took this last week. I've also talked numerous times about my desire to move to NC after I retire. Originally, I had wanted my house to be paid off when I retire, but with the heavy spending last year, I kind of got derailed from that goal. However, that was before my desire to move to NC really set in. I looked at a quick amortization schedule this morning, and I would still owe somewhere in the neighborhood of $85K still to be paid on my home when I retire. I'm trying to decide should I use the extra $400-500 in my pay to put towards my mortgage, or should I just start stockpiling it away in a savings account. I don't want to put it in the market since I'm a little more than 5 years from retirement and don't want to risk losing it. I could use that to go towards paying cash for the home I buy in NC. Any thoughts? I don't have anyone to talk to about my plans, desires, fears, etc. My mom would have a fit if I started talking about it. She doesn't want to me to move away from them. I understand that, but some time in my life I'd like to do something because it's what I want.

Motherto2 ... he needs to find an Air National Guard/USAF job. Seems that the Navy, Marines, Army and Coast Guard don't work... and they aren't interchangeable. (But thanks) Post-retirement, post-military, I suspect we'll be looking in the Arizona/Texas part of the country, at least initially.

Today is my dad's 89th birthday. He was quite proud of himself because yesterday he washed the car and he'd already taken his 3 walks when I talked to him. He told his sister when she called to wish him happy birthday. She said it was the right place for them to be.
I told mom to have the realtor put the main bathroom online since only the basement bathroom is on there and it makes the house look like something I would pass over because of the cost of a bathroom redo. Other than that, the online photos do the house justice.
My DS wants me to take Bella cat. That is the poor cat that nobody wants. DNiece adopted it for GNiece who is allergic to it. When GN kept getting sick, DS took cat but she doesn't like cats. GN no longer is sick all the time but DS does not want the cat any more. She asked if Lucy and I would like another cat. Told her I have to think about that one. I keep asking Lucy, but she doesn't answer.

I wish I had some wonderful advice to offer but I don't. I too really, really want my house to be paid off, just for peace of mind. I also would really like to move to another part of the state. It is a two hour drive from where I live now but on the other side of the mountains which would make it difficult to visit during the winter. Living over there would be doing something I want instead of doing everything for everyone else. DD will be married in less than year and this would be an opportunity for me do something for me.
I guess conventional wisdom would be to stockpile your cash to give yourself options when you do retire instead of being house rich and cash poor.

I would stockpile the cash. Then, later, if you want to accelerate a payoff, you can. But the flexibility and liquidity of cash cannot be beaten... and the residential real estate market isn't what it used to be.
I did more decluttering today and we have another load to take to the Thrift Shop.
The accountant called today to tell us that we ARE getting refunds (state and fed) ... and that he'll e-file for us at the end of the month. (He knows I am curious, so I'm glad he called with figures.) The refunds will go into savings.

Theo, Happy Birthday to your healthy dad! That's awesome!
Sharon, I totally know how you feel. Thanks for sharing. I think you and Molly right, and I should just stockpile the money. I think I will seriously look into opening another account at Navy Fed. I only use my local CU that I've been a member since I was 5. Then have it automatically transferred.
I noticed a moving truck at my neighbor's house across the street. She had told me a few months ago she was moving out and getting a divorce. I thought maybe she had changed her mind, but now I guess not. Saw him washing his truck this morning, so he's still there, at least for now. So sad, I think they were married close to 30 years.
I have a pot of chili cooking in the crock pot. I just broke down and bought a programmable pot. I am away from home at least 10 1/2 hours now, and when the commute starts, it will be over 12, so I decided to go ahead and bite the bullet now. I had used it this last Monday for a port roast, and was delayed getting home a couple of hours. All I could worry about is that it had burned up. This will make me feel better.

Mom and I went to the home show today and looked at all the fun stuff for the house. I won't be putting any of that fancy stuff in my house anytime soon but it is fun to look and it was free parking and free admission. It was a good way to kill a couple of hours on a cold, foggy Sunday afternoon.
I did look at some of the carpet samples and talked to some of the people from the paint stores but the granite counter top people knew I wouldn't be calling them anytime soon.
