I adored the way that Ralph Lauren's Silver smelled when my DH wore it. They stopped making it . I found something almost as delicious from Versace last year. Whatever you get, remind nephew to use it lightly. I still remember the gaggingly strong clouds of Polo (which is a very nice scent, applied appropriately) in the high school hallways.

My DS18 and his friends wear Axe. IMHO this is one of the worst smelling "fragrances". I don't mean to be offensive, but I really do not like it. I personally really like Bvlgari fragrances for both men and women. But for a teenager I would probably get Polo, a Tommy Hilfiger, or a Calvin Klein scent.

Hugo Boss scents are also very nice. Playboy makes a line of fragrances that are quite nice and not as much of a strain on your pocketbook. My son loves them.

I think Axe smells like ass, but that seems to be the popular scent with teens.

I think Axe smells like ass, but that seems to be the popular scent with teens. While I'm not a big Axe fan either, just wait until your little guy is a teenager... even Axe is preferable to unwashed teen boy. Have no idea why or how they stink so badly, but they do. They just do. FWIW, my soon-to-be 13 year old does like the Axe Phoenix scent and since he likes it enough to actually shower WITH SOAP - HALLELUJAH! and then apply that Axe deoderant, I'll buy him all the Axe he can smear on. It's better than the alternative. Not sure if 18 year olds would still wear Axe, though. I'm thinking they might have outgrown it at that point and be ready for the nicer stuff. Whatever they choose, just be thankful for a boy that wants to smell nice.

I liked Drakkar Noir, but that's probably considered really old and dated by now. And to be honest, I probably only liked it because one of my first boyfriends (who is possibly the hottest guy I've ever encountered) wore it. So, um, maybe I should just go back to that happy memory and let other people do the recommending...

It's a crap shoot if the nephew provides no hints as to his preferences.

My 18yo nephew asked for cologne for Christmas. He asked me to pick out something that I think smells good. I don't even know where to start and I really don't like shopping for fragrances. Does anyone have a favorite cologne that they recommend? Tell him men don't want to smell like flowers. Sweat is a good, natural sexy fragrance, that gets the Pheromones going. Oh alright, anything by Ferragamo...there are a few other options.

I also like the Bvlgari fragances. I wish you were shopping for a niece, I have so many more suggestions on women's perfume.

I think Axe smells like ass, but that seems to be the popular scent with teens. My daughter teaches middle school, and she says that in the warm weather, the combination of Axe and B.O. on the boys when they're gathered together in the classroom or in the halls at class passing is enough to knock over a rhino ( or a teacher ).

Does anyone have a favorite cologne that they recommend? Given he's only 18, go ahead and get some of that non-masculine smelling stuff for now. In a few years pop for some Old Spice - he'll be on the prowl big time by then and most women seem to like Old Spice because it reminds them of their dad - somebody "safe." Just tell him to use it sparingly.

I worked in a middle school and Axe and BO are the WORST combination! I don't buy my boys Axe. I buy them Old Spice Deodarant. Yes, it sounds like old man stuff, but it actually has a really nice mild scent. Wrongside, for perfume for ladies I highly recommend Bvlgari. I like the Omnia Amethyste or the Omnia Crystalline. It is pricey but very nice. If you would like something a little less expensive I like Marc Jacobs Lola for the fall and winter and the Oh Lola for spring and summer.

Oh, and I do not recommend Obsession. It is not a popular scent for teenage boys now. It was in the 90's but it is a very dated scentl now.

I also like the Bvlgari fragances. I wish you were shopping for a niece, I have so many more suggestions on women's perfume. I'm interested in hearing those suggestions too. I don't own any perfume and every once in awhile I think it would be nice if I had some. My current favorites are: Viktor & Rolf - Flowerbomb Thierry Mugler - Angel Miss Dior Couture Couture by Juicy Couture I'll get you the names tonight. Some are foreign and I'm sure I'll botch it. You can buy decants of hundreds of different perfumes. The supplier I have used was called "The Perfumed Court" - you can buy packs by the # of samples (ie decants) Some frangrances count as 2 decants and some you only get a 1/2 decant but it counts as 1 decant. I had always wanted to try Chanel #5 and I tried it this way. I'm glad I didn't ever buy it because it is expensive and it wasn't for me. It's a great way to try expensive perfumes before you invest in them.

Wrongsideof30 - The Perfumed Court also has men's fragrances. Maybe you could buy your nephew a sample pack of some fragrances you think he may like. Then he'd have a variety and you could get him his favorite for the next occasion? My DS17 is so picky about cologne - he makes me nuts. And I want to make him walk when he gets in the car and is bathed in Axe.

I like the Lacoste colognes. My brother started wearing them when he got sick of Axe (he's almost 23).
For women, Thierry Mugler Angel and Michael Kors.

I like Angel and would wear it - except for the it's first 30 - 40 minutes of industrial oil and machinery tinny nastiness almost retch inducing reek... I wish I was willing to live thru that repeatedly... it's an interesting scent once it settles down. Angel and I do not get along very well. Since scents differ from person to person, I'd recommend something small or maybe a sampler kinda thing - that way they can try out the scents and see which ones smell OK. I like 'lemon' or citris based scents on guys - unfortunately sometimes they wind up smelling like old Timey Furniture Polish (Pledge). Cologne/purfume reacts differently on each person.

Tiny, I totally agree on the Angel. It does have a strong odd scent at first. I wonder what that is?

Tiny, I totally agree on the Angel. It does have a strong odd scent at first. I wonder what that is? Angel (for women) has no flower scents in it... it's all food with some sort of top note that's got a synthetic stink (chocolate? motor oil?) when I wear it. Once it settles down I love the vanilla/bergamot that's left behind- at least those are what lingers with my body chemistry (or whatever they say it is). If I could just get the vanilla/bergamot scent right off the start I'd bathe in Angel. I tend to like the chypre perfumes - but those tend to old fashion and in the 'evening', 'mature' or 'agressive' category. Angel kinda falls into those categories - it's not flowery or sweet and definitely assaults one's sense of smell

For women's scents I really like Estee Lauder; Beautiful and Tuscany are both very nice. I also like "lovely" by Sarah Jessica Parker. What I'm using currently is not really a perfume, but Madagascar essential oil by Aveda is a fabulous scent. It sounds weird, but I just lightly rub it over my clothing.

I don't like sweet, floral scents. This one is spicy!
