We spent ours in the emergency department. Top that.
My brother was diagnosed with blood clots in his leg yesterday (dvt, his leg is swollen like crazy) and the hospital gave him blood thinners and he was on his way home. My sister called me just after 7 this morning that my mom called for an ambulance because he was having trouble breathing and the pain spread to his groin. One of the clots dislodged and he now has a pulmonary embolism. He'll be fine,.it was caught and he's staying overnight in the hospital. But what a fucking awful day. It was strange spending a holiday in the hospital but Im glad my family all stuck together..

Wow!!! You win the award for Thanksgiving Day Serious Family Drama!! Hope your brother recovers quickly and without further issues.
P.S. Did you eat the hospital turkey dinner? If so, was it any good? One of the best turkey dinners I ever had was in a hospital. Who would have guessed?

Lone - the irony of all this happening on thanksgiving isn't lost on me. I am beyond relieved and grateful my brother is with us. He's a pain in the ass, but i love the guy.
Grg - luckily, the hotel resort my sister works at is across the street from the hospital so we had a decent lunch. Can't say paninis are.traditional! The line for.the hospital turkey dinner was insane.

But seriously - I am glad your brother is ok, and even if it was in the ER you were all together.

That's so terrible about your brother, Meghan, but I'm glad the story has a happy ending. Your family truly has something to be grateful for. Wishing your brother a speedy recovery.

Meghan..I wish your brother a quick road to health. Can you reschedule TG and celebrate a different day? We had to do that one year for Christmas.

Hope he gets better soon! I'm glad your brother had family around to help him. This happened to a friend of mine on her 25th anniversary. Turns out she has some sort of blood disorder though.

Actually, I would posit that this has been a very good day for you. DVTs have a high rate of fatality and your brother made it through this ok. The outcome could have been waaay different and you truly would have had a bad Thanksgiving. Your brother's glass was half full.
David Bloom, the news reporter, died at 39 from this condition.

Stop feeling sorry for yourself 3. If he really is a dog, kick his ass to the curb (get a lawyer, blah, blah, blah) 4. Believe in yourself, again (It seems that the holiday season brings all sorts of things up to the surface) I'm sorry, but life happens to us all. All the best.

And thank you everyone. Brother was released today. Still in pain, but the clot in his lung dissolved or was taken care of somehow, and hopefully the ones remaining in his leg dissolve as well. It was such a draining day, mainly from all the sitting, worrying, and driving. DF and I live two hours from the hospital my brother was taken to, so we left when I got the call at 7:15 in the morning and didn't get home until almost 9. Then we had to drive to my Mom's to get clothes and stuff for my brother (45 minutes from the hospital), drive back to the hospital, and then go home. That's a total pity party for myself, I know. But Thanksgiving was somewhat salvaged because I did think to bring my grandmother's jello mold that I had picked up on Wednesday and we all sat around my brother's bed enjoying a family tradition. ;D

Meghan, I'm so sorry your family had to deal with this, and so glad your brother is doing better! I can certainly sympathize with the driving to and from the hospital. It's just draining, both physically and emotionally, especially when it's unexpected and plans are derailed. And all the more so when the hospital is far away.
BUT, your family has a GREAT deal to be thankful for!
I hope you can have another, private Thanksgiving later on, or a great one next year. My best wishes to your brother for a full and speedy recovery.
