Meghan, thank you for letting us know. That's great that he was able to go home today. Will he be on meds to prevent that from happening again? I'm not familiar with that medical problem.

POM I'm sure that he will be on blood thinners, but I don't know if it's a long-term treatment or not.

Meghan, thank you for letting us know. That's great that he was able to go home today. Will he be on meds to prevent that from happening again? I'm not familiar with that medical problem. He's going to be on warfarin for six months. I had to purchase a weeks' supply of Lovenox injections for him, so I hope he only needs it for one week because that shit is expensive! He needs to get an electric razor and switch to soft bristle toothbrushes because those have less risk of causing bleeding than a disposable razor or medium bristle brush. He's going to stay with my sister for a few days since her house is one level and he needs to avoid stairs (accident risk). My little brother is an old man!

Meghan, Lovenox is expensive, but right now think of it as his lifeline! Has he had DVT before/have any major underlying health issues? So happy he's doing so well overall, but remind him that being a total couch potato is not what he needs to do-regular movement is vital to preventing a recurrence!

Has he been traveling long-distances or just couch sitting too much?

He has a slipped disc and a herniated disc in his back. He was in a car accident a couple of years ago and never really did anything after initially seeing a doctor, so he just started going downhill earlier this year. So yeah, he's been inactive and depressed for most of the year and I'm sure that was a big contributing factor to his DVT/PE. I hope that this is his wake-up call to take care of himself. He's only 29. My grandmom did have a blood clot years ago, but it was when she was a smoker and on birth control, so I don't think that would make it a genetic predisposition.

DVTs are also common after surgeries where you become not as mobile.
I've gone through lovenox treatment and you are right, it is expensive. The advantage of it over warfarin is that you don't have to adjust your diet or have repeated blood tests to titrate the dose.
Mt belly looked like polka dots after a month of twice/day injections.

Goldenrule raised a great question ... does he fly a lot?
Sorry, I saw your answer.
The classic Lovenox treatment here is two weeks, not one.
ETA: If this is the result of an accident, can he pursue that? 29 is really young, it sounds like he didn't do what he could or should have at the time of the accident (medically speaking).

Eh... his life is just a hot mess, so we'll just say I'm happy he's alive and leave it at that. Hopefully this is his wake-up call that he can't sit on his ass and feel sorry for himself anymore.

Megan, sorry about your brother. I read your post the other day and cursed wondering what the hell was going on. Same thing happened in our family only it was a stroke.

Glad to hear he's doing better, DVT is nothing to mess with. I have a uncle who is going through this and I think he has been on blood thinners for close to a year Hope your brother's issue resolves quickly and he feels better in no time
