I wasn't supposed to work, but one of my coworkers (who wasn't supposed to work either) got called yesterday and told the "special job" was going to go through Thanksgiving (they were supposed to take a break). He had already planned to have friends/family come down, and his wife has to work that night, so he looked sick when he found out he'd have to work. I told him I'd cover the shift for him if needed (it will just be my brother, his wife, and my parents at my parent's house, and they all live in the same town, so much less a "big deal" for me to miss it). My parents decided they'd just hold off dinner until I got back into town, so now I'll work my 12 hour shift, bake pies while I'm working (I told one of the guys who is stuck working that I'd make one for them too), then go to the parent's house to eat. It's going to be a long day.

We are going to our friends' house this year. Usually we drive 4-5 hours to my Dad's family, but my DH has to work over the weekend so we nixed that idea. All we have to bring is wine and dessert. The downside is no leftovers

I honestly don't know if they'll be any, we haven't ever gone there before. But if I tell myself there won't be any, I'll be pleasantly surprised if they send me home with some.

Thanksgiving has come and gone here, and I had to work. To add insult to injury, they ran out of turkey in the staff cafeteria and i had to settle for a grilled cheese sandwich. I think I'll roast a small turkey this weekend just for the hell of it. All this turkey talk is making me very hungry.

We will be going to the ILs. I will pig out on the food my FIL makes and either go lay down or sit on the couch and zone while I let the ILs play with, spoil, and take care of the girls. DH will most likely have a game system plugged in somewhere so I may play a game with him some, or just watch him play what ever.

We have ten months in a year, and ten days in each week. We had to move a few holidays around.

I dunno. Roll it in flour and go for the wet spot? I'm talking about the turkey, you sickos! And not in the way that you think. Ok, in the way that you think.

Turkey at sister and brother-in-law's tomorrow. DH is doing the turkey, cranberry-citrus sauce, pumpkin muffins, and gravy. Tonight, he cooks the turkey. Tomorrow, I'm making green bean casserole. Only the three of us will eat it, plus my vegetarian niece. My sister's family is small, and I guess oldest niece won't be home for T.G., but the youngest niece and her boyfriend will probably be there. I guess that my aunt and uncle will be there too, although I had understood that they were going to California for T.G. with two of their daughters' families. So, we'll find out what's going on tomorrow. In the next couple of weeks, we'll have our private T.G. with just the three of us. DH got a 10 lb turkey just for us, and will make Jewish turkey soup, and we'll have potatoes au gratin and key lime pie.

Oh holy shit. Sheila in cali you do really do win. Sorry (?) that you have to " enjoy " T.G. in that fashion. You can come over to our house if you want to. We're pretty harmless and the only thing that does any harassing is the poodle who wants more turkey to eat.....

We are staying home: it's just the two of us and our dog. We are cooking something simple and will spend the day together watching TV, talking, having sex, walking the dog, etc.
A typical day in our household. We didn't even bother buying a turkey this year.

It's just the two of us so we are going out to eat. Our son, DIL and 3 grandkids are coming Saturday, and this will be our Christmas with them. We head to Gulf Shores, Al. on Dec. 22.....I don't care much for holidays in general anymore, so for Christmas....we get out of town. If we still owned our winter home in Florida, we'd already be gone.

Well, we were going to have a ribeye roast, but the darn thing hasn't thawed completely (been in the refrig since Monday night!?!). No matter; we'll do it tomorrow. DH had a buddy over last night to see the new house, and is pretty hungover, so waiting until tomorrow works out fine. DH is napping, I'm watching TV and dorking around on thinnernets. I've called my family and wished everyone Happy Thanksgiving, and caught up with my ex-husband who called to wish me happy Thanksgiving. It's a really good day. Happy Thanksgiving All!

I'm at work. I'm hoping everything stays quiet so I can sneak away to see DH, my kids and my inlaws for awhile. They live close to my work.
I felt bad when I had to leave to go to work today. DD threw her arms around me and said she would really miss me. She sometimes does that on other days, but today it made me feel bad.

Geez, C, how'd you manage to avoid any family drama this holiday? Oh ye of little faith. He will get the call about the latest useless relative before the end of Black Friday. He doesn't need to actually be there to get dragged into the drama silly!

Today was the most relaxing Thanksgiving I have ever had. It was just the four of us: DH, the kids, and me. And it was just the four of us for the first time in our home with the awesome cook's kitchen. We all woke up around 9. The kids and DH headed out to the high school football game (we won!!) while I started cooking. Made the pies first (including homemade crust), then chopped veggies for the stuffing, then put the turkey in, DH washed and chopped the potatoes, I got green beans ready for steaming, made a salad, in between tv football games DH polished my silver candelabras and the gravy boat, I set the table, warmed the rolls, DH carved, DH opened the wine (Sonoma Cutrer Russian River Ranches Chardonnay), I lit the candles, and we sat down to eat by candlelight at 6:30. I cleaned as I went so there is only minimal mess remaining. The guys are watching the Pats game and eating dessert and I am checking email, this board, etc. while eating mine. It was awesome -- no stress, no drama, no pressure. I could get used to holidays like this.

I also had a very relaxing holiday. I cooked all the side dishes yesterday, so today was cook the turkey, reheat everything else and make gravy.
My parents and in laws were here, and my brother and his family came too. It was a beautiful day, so the kids spent most of the afternoon running around outside.

Have you started your 4 day workweek yet? If so, sounds like it's already making things easier for you.

I am doing my work from home one day and it is working out pretty well.
I started cooking last night at 7 and finished at 10. DH helped out, which was amazing because he doesn't cook.

Goldenrule - We've been doing that for the past 4? years now. It's so nice not to feel rushed or deal with other people. That probably sounds bad but it's the truth. Wake up when you feel like it, start cooking when you feel like it and eat when you want to. I have great memories of Thanksgivings with a lot of family and with friends but I'm just not up to it any more. DH takes the entire week off and we get minor projects done and then tomorrow we'll put up our Christmas decorations and trim our tree and have left overs for dinner. Pumpkin pie with extra whipped cream will be breakfast with our coffee tomorrow.
The only issue we had was that I had to store our frozen turkey out in the little frig in the garage. Yesterday I had asked DH to move it into the kitchen frig since I had cleared out some food and it was still frozen solid since Monday! He ran out to get a fresh one last night. So I'll thaw the other one for Christmas dinner. The rest of the day was perfect even though I woke up saying "I don't feel like cooking!" But after my coffee I felt great and put on some music and everything went off without any more surprises. I just had a turkey sandwich with a glass of Champagne. I'm pleasantly plump right now. ;D
Happy Thanksgiving everybody!!

I don't think the 4 of us have ever had a major holiday alone together, so I was a little anxious. But, as I posted above, it was a really nice change. We'll be celebrating Christmas with the clan, but it's nice to know that doing something "different" doesn't mean it will be bad -- it's just "different" and can actually be quite nice. Too funny about your turkey not defrosting. That one was fighting his fate until the very end.

I just survived my Thanksgiving, which we always hold the day after. You would think it would be relatively stress-free since we get pizza. Dessert is my oldest grandchild's birthday cake and ice cream.
I spent four days cleaning. It seemed that everything I looked at needed cleaning. I would have painted the master bathroom, which no one else goes into, if I had time. I cleaned the basement because someone might ask to play pool (they didn't). You get the idea.
I love my grandkids, Lena, I promise. (A private joke that Lena will understand.) But six under the age of nine almost killed me. Everywhere there were kids in time out by their parents. Kids hit each other. They took each other's toys. They called each other poopie-head. Kids were also crawling everywhere and adults were stepping on them, literally. So those kids were crying, too.
The poor dog took refuge in the back office. Her leash is everyone's favorite toy, and she didn't want to play dog for a bunch of toddlers. My husand and I wanted to join her with a couple of drinks, but we didn't think it was polite.
I have almost recovered. The funny thing is that my daughter-in-law offered to do Christmas at her house, and we had to decline. My husband spent weeks doing the grandkids' stockings (which they hung tonight), and he would be crushed if they didn't come here to see what "Santa" brought. The holidays are more important to him than anyone else. I have to keep telling him not to buy more decorations. Lol.
Now you can tell me that this is the chaos that I will fondly remember when the kids are older. Um, can I fast-forward to then?
