I gotta ask... Because I am genuinely curious....
Last night we went to an event at the local HS. One of the teachers is a belly dancer. She danced with a couple students. She had on this weird costume with her midsection barely covered with this mesh. On her exposed arms, shoulders, etc... were covered with tattoos.
Is this appropriate for a HS event?
The kids said that she dresses that way and does the same belly dancing for school rallys. I guess if she was at least good looking... but she really isn't. At all.
I found the sight distasteful in many ways... one of the teens had the best comment - "That's a sight I wish I could unsee, but now it is burned into my brain." LOL

I dunno. Sounds a bit strange. But, there are some pretty goofy teachers who are good teachers. I personally don't have a problem with tattoos. If she was doing some cultural demonstration, maybe. I think dancing with the students is inappropriate and a bad idea.

I'm pretty sure the attractiveness of the teacher shouldn't be the deciding factor, because she sure as crap shouldn't be trying to turn on teenage boys. Culture week, sure. Some sort of teacher talent show, sure. Random pep rally seems weird.
And I don't have an issue with the tattoos.

I don't have issues with that tattoos, I have some myself and don't think they have anything to do with whether or not I am a good teacher or role model.
I think the belly dancing is a little weird though. I guess I would have to see it to determine if it were appropriate behavior or not.

I'm surprised she was allowed to do it. Totally unprofessional and inappropriate.

Teachers do interact with students on a more personal level. There is the dunking booth or pie in the face contests and that sort of thing to promote camraderie. It isn't some strict, sterile relationship. But, i am surprised the school would allow this. Even if it is totally harmless on the part of the teacher, that could easily be misconstrued .

I think we have to consider the ethos of the town. If I remember correctly, Shasta lives in Northern California. I only spent a few weeks in her area, but the town I stayed in was very quirky. It was tiny, but main street was full of art galleries, head shops and mystic stores. A belly dancer wouldn't really be a big deal in that sort of town, while in a place like St. George, Utah it would be the end of the world.

I thought belly dancing was supposed to be an art form, totally unrelated to pole dancing. I think the key would be the costume. if the costume indeed had mesh that covered her midriff, then it might be fine.
You'd actually have to see her perform to see if it would be provocative. I'm around young teachers all the time that do goofy stuff like dress up for Homecoming, etc. How they can teach Shakespeare in their jammies, robe, and slippers is beyond me, but so is how to check my messages on my cell phone. (That's almost but not quite a joke.)
And, yes, teachers and principals do goofy stuff to try to hook the kids. Many a principal has "kissed the pig" if students in his school read enough books, sold enough coupon books, or did well enough on achievement tests. I'm sure that more than a few parents thought that was funny, and more than a few thought that should have been below his dignity.

That implies she isn't "hot" in their opinion.

Doesn't bother me at all.
My idea of inappropriate behavior was when a male teacher was running around the gym chasing the little girls. And when he caught them, he 'tickled' them. A man in his mid to late 20's doing this to 5th and 6th graders.
So a dancing teacher or a few in their pj's for spirit week...big fucking deal.

Lone, I actually looked to see if anyone put up a video... the "performance" was so bad I am surprised no one did.
Yes, part of my county is pretty artsy, but we don't live in that part...

So, is the problem the tattoos, unattractiveness, or the dancing?

I don't like it. In high school, my daughter's teachers were friends with the kids on Facebook. I can see email correspondence for homework, etc., but that's it.

What bothers you? The fact that she was belly dancing? That is a legitimate form of dance and usually the mid belly is left uncovered, or covered with a veil. The fact that she had tattoos? The fact that she was a teacher? The fact that she was ugly?
If he woman was beautiful and belly dancing, would this be an issue....even if she was a teacher?

Shame on the principal for not taking appropriate measures. Makes me wonder if he's sleeping with her if he is a he?

Yes, it it totally wrong in that setting, period. Regardless of whether she's pretty or not. You couldn't have tattoos showing at my old school and some male teachers caught flak about it. It's a distraction and the rules were the same for kids as teachers. If you couldn't come to school with purple hair because it drew attention to yourself, you sure couldn't come to school with your but hanging out, either. Or a dragon on your leg.

Oped...he's not a teacher. He's a parent. I've seen many wacky parents. When my daughter was small, there were a few houses I wouldn't let her play at. School is school.

But the parent was denied access to the school... I think I understand you to say though that there should be different expectations of teachers and parents ?
I taught with 2 tatoos... they can both be covered up, but the one on my ankle was frequently visable and the kids knew i had it. I told them the same things that the parent in the article says he does...

I don't allow scantily clad people in my building. And be clear, I wouldn't bring in professional belly dancers for an assembly. That's not appropriate at a school. The tattoos don't bother me unless they are inappropriate or truly distracting--like on the face. But then I wouldn't hire that person because it would distract from the learning environment.

What bothered me was the combination of her horrid dance skills and the fact that she was up there shaking it in a very provocative way with teenage boys in attendance.
I thought it was odd, but marginally acceptable for the talent event. Then I found out that at all the football rallies that the kids are mandated to attend, she gets out there and does the same thing. I found that inappropriate. Why? Because teenage boys are hormonal, because she can't dance so it was more seductive than dancing, and because she looked like a tramp being half dressed with about 20 tattoos hanging out.
If she were a student then I would have chalked it up to no one telling her she looked like a tramp.

Does anyone know if the teacher received pre-approval from the school principal?
As a side note, girls' cheerleading uniforms can be a bit skimpy.
ETA: Having read this teacher also belly dances at football rallies tells me school officials are aware of her act and costume. If they haven't said anything to date, it would seem it does not bother them.

If you pole danced in front of the class, I'd take issue.

My niece is on a dance team at her HS and some of her costumes have been much less than a belly dancing costume. She just posted a picture of them on her FB page where she has got on a skin tight top and VERY short shorts. I'm not saying that I think it is appropriate or not. I've been in areas of the world where belly dancing is considered the 'norm', not a provocation to teenage boys (which really need no provocation whatsoever IMO). Is it just different and that is what is considered provocative?
